We could have said the same thing about adding DW to the active roster. But I think this addition helps, including with ball handling and igniting O. We'll see.

For one thing, DW is man. And 6'9. And he's played D1 ball and put up numbers when he played.

This kid is a 6-6 "athletic" wing who should still be in high school. He's going to jump ahead of Nolley, DJ, and Lester for time at the 2/3 or ahead of Williams and DJ at the 4?

C'mon man.

He is immediately the most athletic player on the team. That is one thing that this team is really missing--elite athletes. The current team is slow, both in foot speed and quickness, and in jumping ability. Damien Baugh is the only really athletic player on the team. Compare (unfair comparison) to 2008 final 4 team--Elite Athletes in Derrick Rose, Antonio Anderson, and Joey Dorsey (Dozier was a really good athlete), and CDR who was just an elite skilled basketball player. Or Penny's elite 8 team--Penny freak athlete and highly skilled basketball player, Billy Smith (elite athlete), Earnest Smith (elite athlete), David Vaughn (good athlete, highly skilled basketball player).

Last year we lost a freak athlete and an uber quick guard. We have no equivalents to replace that athleticism.

Our current team has some skilled players--DeAndre, Landers, DJ, Lester. None of them is an elite athlete.

No, we don't need "at-uh-letes" we need dudes who can put the ball in the basket.

People who don't make 55 foot passes down court that have about a 10% success rate.

We need guys who don't dribble into double teams or who hold the ball for 20 seconds, dribble to the middle of the paint, then put up an awkward fade away with two dudes on him.

We need guys who don't shoot tough 3 pointers 8 seconds into the shot clock or guys who do the ball fake, move a foot, THEN dribble and get called for the travel.

We need guys who don't set moving screens. We need guys who don't foul when there are 6 seconds left in the shot clock.

NONE of that has to do with at-uh-letic.

The problem seems to be that normal fundamentals ARE rocket science when one's basketball IQ matches jersey numbers.

I’d add-we need guys who can shoot 80% from 3 feet (as Malco did the other night). And we need drop dead reliable free throws shooters.

Exactly. If they make these same poor decisions every game you can't tell me that this is not an issue in practice.

He’s a point guard.

Cal actually had a funny comment back in the day. He would tell recruits that they were going to play point guard, but they weren't going to bring the ball up the court or set up the offense. He is NOT a point guard. The argument can easily be made that he is more of a small forward than a two guard.

I honestly hope he doesn’t get eligible this year. The thought of Penny adding another player to the rotation is horrifying.

Not to mention that if you drew up a composite of LQ, Nolley, and DJ as one player, Nesbitt probably fits square in the middle of all of them.

Well, our problem is that every player does ALL of those.

Most players only do a few.

Some players do none.

He can play point guard. He is eligible immediately. Saying these things, I doubt he plays much for now and he may never play point here.

No he isn't.

At all.

Yes. He can definitely play the point.

More importantly, how many more 6-6 wing players does Memphis need right now?

Ding ding ding!!! 04-cheers

I am excited to get him on campus because it gives him a huge jump on next year.

In terms of this year we are already have an athletic raw high school senior on the roster that is massively struggling to adjust to the speed and strength of college. We already have a rotation that needs to be cut down by 2 and we already have a plethora of wing type players who cannot shoot.

I would much rather him spend the time on campus working out, eating right, and learning the speed and strength needed for college and getting ready for next year than losing eligibility by playing this year.

He wouldn’t lose any eligibility for playing this year.

He can play point guard. He is eligible immediately. Saying these things, I doubt he plays much for now and he may never play point here.

No he isn't.

At all.

Yes. He can definitely play the point.

According to whom? Brooks?

Every listing of the dude is as a wing, forward, or combo guard. Described as "well built" and "tough." There is not any mention about his being able to play point.

Here is a highlight video that consists of about 90% dunks and 10% threes. Not shown at all are any plays from the point where he's doing any driving and dishing or making any incredible passes.

That is part of Memphis' problem. We have a bunch of ball handlers that Penny considers able to run the offense. But just being able to dribble proficiently doesn't make one a point.

You can learn a lot more about a player by watching full games, not highlight reels. You get a much better feel for their bball IQ, decision making, etc. There are quite a few of his full games on youtube if you have some spare time. Reminds me of Tyreke a little. I think PG is feasible.

RE: Jordan Nesbit Enrolled At Memphis
I was talking to a buddy of mine yesterday. We are both in our late 50's and can still swish free throws at a clip greater than 60%. How can you have a division 1 basketball team that cannot hit better than 60% from the line? Don't get me wrong. I love and support our team, but how can they be so bad from the line?

As previously pointed out, there are a lot of problems with fundamentals.

Is this Brooks' big news?

I mean, it is big news. I can't recall ever having a midseason addition from the HS ranks. Unfortunately, I also agree that this will not solve most of our current problems.

Yes, it's Brooks big news.

Tyreke was an ELITE high school player (top 5) not top 60. One year later he was NBA Rookie of the Year. He was gifted with skills only three or four Tigers ever possessed.
