But... the NCAA woulda nailed us harder than they eventually ended up doing.
I figure they spared new coach Pastner.

Yeah...No

UK had a better roster than we would have had.

UK had Patrick Patterson and also got Bledsoe...

We would have had Will Coleman and Xavier Henry (Turned out to be a flop)

Xavier was not exactly a flop - in college. You're probably thinking about his NBA career - especially the Grizz.

And conventional thinking is Bledsoe was coming here, too.

As far as that goes, there wasn't a huge gap between Coleman and Patterson at the time either. PP was obviously better offensively - but Coleman was the better grinder and at mixing it up.

Conventional Thinking that Bledsoe was coming here...From who, Memphis fans? No one knew who Bledsoe was until after Cal left.

And Will Coleman compared to Patterson is comical. Coleman was a terrible on ball defender and below average rebounder on the defensive end...We had a negative rebounding margin that year.

Coleman didn't start half the year on a team that didn't make the tourney and also was one of the worst defensive teams in recent Memphis history.

If Cal wanted Bledsoe he was getting Bledsoe. The UK logo is not what landed him. Cal was one of the few who could get him qualified with the questionable HS transcript. Of course, we would have been nailed by the NCAA. But what's new? Memphis was one of his final 4 schools.

Coleman v Patterson is a stretch, sure. But Coleman was solid. And we also had Witherspoon, Mack, Sallie.

And you want to defend your "Xavier was a flop" comment? Talk about comical.

If I remember correctly we were at 13 scholarships already when Cal left.

And Flop for Xavier may have been harsh...But for the #3 player in the class I would say he underperfomed compared to Rose, Tyreke and Wall. He put up stats but he was not a catalyst.

He was #6 in the class, and he performed better as a D1 player than fully 2/3 of his peer group in the last 15 years.

Better than...
Budinger
Singler
DeRozan (very close)
Teague
Harrison
Turner
Diallo
Duval
Bassey
Williams

Not as well as...
Knight
Bennett
Fox
Carey

He also generally did much better than the players right behind him...
Hamilton
Sidney
Stephenson
Gallon
Yarou
Boynton
Gaddy
Taylor

Not a flop at all.

I'd rather have the Natty, and a couple of other F4's...than to just have that old Memphis city pride, with no NCAA appearances to show for it.

#8 in the country in 2020 versus the NIT title this year? Even that tiny window doesn't work in our favour. The best regional talent needs a lot of help.

It is definitely fun when it all comes together.

Problem the opportunity to build a 2nd weekend team on local talent comes around once ever other decade...And you better not lose any of the high level local kids.

Back to the original question, Calipari losing never gets old for me. The angst of UK fans is as entertaining as anything in college basketball.

All fan bases have a lunatic fringe. They just have a really, really large fringe. And while most fan base’s lunatics belong in Salem State Hospital, their lunatics belong in Arkham Asylum

(And yes they are really entertaining)

RE: Has Calipari losing gotten old?
Cal met with UK discreetly before our S16 game with Missouri.
Read the story on a pro UK news site.
When I messgd them and told them that the date of that meeting in their story was before his last S16 tourney game... and WHY would anyone do that? The story disappeared into the ether..
So, no, him losing isn't getting old to me.

Cal was their 3rd or 4th option at the time. Billy Donovan and Tom Izzo turned them down. Here's where you may find your answer. Izzo was set to take the job but they upset someone so he couldn't leave at that time and UK didn't want to wait. So that put Cal in play but we had to lose to Missouri in that S16 game for him to remain an option. I also read where he met with UK, I believe in Chicago prior to the S16 game.

RE: Has Calipari losing gotten old?
Calipari told many people at Memphis as early as 2005 that Kentucky was a dream job to him. Wasn't called in 2007 and that irritated him.

he said that a LOT during his barnstorm tour of Kentucky after being hired. Was pissed that Memphis had made him sell tickets.
