No national exposure....
Looking at games that most people across the country can watch today. If not at home, at least at a sports bar.

Creighton vs Butler
Valparaiso vs DePaul
Youngstown vs Oakland
UMASS Lowell vs Binghamton
New Hampshire vs Stony Brook
ETSU vs Furman
George Mason vs Rhode Island
San Diego State vs Utah State

So can somebody explain to me again how FloHoops is a good deal from us when the CAA gets zero national exposure? Except for a few out of conference games?

No argument from me.

I don’t think it was ever meant to be a good deal for fans, or for National exposure. It was meant to be good for conference pockets.

It is terrible for recruiting.

I was actually referring to the conference as a whole. We get nearly zero exposure and it hurts recruiting CAA wise. And people wonder why the CAA as a whole is doing so bad. The CAA will never get back to a strong, competitive conference with such lame, idiotic leadership. Go read the SoCon's mission statement. They have a true vision.

RE: No national exposure....
I think in addition to the money, the CAA truly believed FloSports was going to become a major player in the sports world.

At the time of signing FloSports had the rights to two MLS teams and was expected to be player in next years MLS primary TV rights deal. In addition to some legit Big 10 basketball content not on the Big 10 network, they had a new Concacaf soccer tournament and other noteworthy rights like select Big 12 conference championships. They were even getting their feet wet with the NBA trying to make a good impression by doing some world junior tournaments and snagged the Canadian rights for the Tour De France.

Sadly the CAA failed to realize that...quite frankly FloSports sucks. Venture capital money will only take you do far. The two MLS team they had, DC and Cincinnati, hated it and both dropped Flo after fan revolts. The hate and bad reputation was well known prior to CAA signing with Flo. Flo's chances at getting significant MLS content next year now seem highly unlikely. The Big 10 content they had last year seems to be MIA, and while they added Big East women's content, I don't see that being aong term deal...more like the Big East taking advantage of money being thrown at them for non primary content Fox hadn't purchased with their men's deal.

The benefit of games on local TV doesn't help us like it helps Northeastern and JMU at all since we don't want to work with our radio partner and the local independent TV station they own.

Hopefully the league has recognized this so that in two years we can make nice with ESPN.

Having said that I'll probably subscribe tomorrow night because I believe this team is worth following

Our problem in the CAA, once again, is too many compteting interests. Several schools value their regional TV deals more than they value a deal with ESPN, that's the entire problem. And FloSports is what you get when you try to placate those schools.

Appease two schools at the detriment of the whole conference. That's some real leadership there.

JMU didn't want FLO and actually cast the sole vote in dissent.

The conference convinced the schools that taking the 100 to 150k each school would get to pay for a CBS sports net package was the best course of action.

It is what it is at this point. Hopefully we can get through the next 2.5 years and move on

They didn't want the ESPN deal either, because it would take away their regional agreements. ESPN doesn't allow those, it's all or nothing. JMU didn't support the FLO deal, but I never saw their alternative proposal. If they didn't want ESPN or FLO, what did they want?

You would have to ask them that. They may have been content with the CAA.TV setup. If we didn't want local TV restrictions of ESPN we could have always kept that.

It just seems incredibly dumb to put 90% of your season behind a very high paywall from an unpopular carrier just so each school can get one or two games on CBS Sports Network.

Again it is what it is at this point and hopefully it will change in 2 years

Seems to me this was Flo vs. CAA.tv., neither of which created national exposure. So, it came down to earning money from Flo AND commercials or only earning money from commercials. Unless we have schools willing to go full ESPN, this is the best we will get. And, BTW, JMU had no alternative. I researched all their statements and nothing mentions an alternative.

I THINK part of the apprehension for going to ESPN was they have higher broadcast standards that the schools are on the hook for. I have heard that includes not using the same announcer feed for radio and the stream. I could imagine that on top of the money Flo was providing and the ability to keep games on traditional local TV, a big reason to avoid ESPN was the extra production costs associated with getting streaming up to ESPN standards. Our streams are pretty good, as are others like Northeastern, but not all schools in the CAA have great quality.

Nothing is going to change for 2.5 more years though so it is what it is. If the team is good I'll subscribe for a month or two and if they aren't I won't . We should have just kept doing the CAA.TV thing if we weren't interested in ESPN as paying for the CBS sports network package is useless

Hopefully a lesson is learned from this moving forward next contract

RE: No national exposure....
Apparently we are the only mid major conference with schools in the whole nation that didn't want to upgrade. And didn't see the benefits of it. So now we have three years of sucking hind tit. I refuse to give money to FloHoops. But it's an individual's choice. I just hope too many don't do it. It would be ironic that if enough people did, it would justify our incompetent leadership to extend the contract.

If that's the case, we have the perfect forum, with most of the biggest schools, where we could create a campaign to lodge a complaint to the Commissioner so he could see the opposition.
