Well, the Top teams in the G4, for the most part, will still be as good as the top teams in the AAC....now the bottom of the AAC is usually still better than the bottom of the other G5 conferences.

What incentive does BYU have to move to the AAC though? They xan currently schedule any games they would like and could possibly make themselves a P5 in the process.

I think they still get to play 3-4 of the OOC as P5s but the path to the access bowl and potential playoff spot has a more clear cut path.

Are they? I mean South should have beaten Tulane this year. Texas State almost beat SMU.

Maybe, but can they? That hasn’t been what they have done so far. In 17, 18, and 19 they only had 4 P5s, 1 FCS, a couple MWC teams, a few of the Indys, and a team or so from another G5 conference.

I would say 2020 AAC was weaker than the past 5 years after Cincy. We'll see if that trend continues.

Honestly there's not a whole lot of difference between the AAC- top 4 (assume its Cincy, Memphis, UCF and Houston) and the SBC now. Whos the strongest football brand left, SMU? Temple? Yes, the $$ is more for now, but if the top brands leave, does ESPN have the right to renegotiate immediately?

If those 4 leave for the B12 i'm not sure a "best of the rest" conference makes sense, and we just look at wholesale regional realignments.

as to BYU, I think they only join AAC if playoffs are expanded to include top G5.

This year, prior to playing CCU, they only played (and blew out) bad teams (no offense TXST and Troy), yet were considered playoff darkhorses until losing. Plus, they lost to CCU by more than UL did, and their "best" win was over a 6-4 UCF team (as opposed to a 9-3 BXII runner up that UL beat) and yet were ranked 4 spots ahead of UL in the final AP poll.

The following article talks about the potential changes in realignment. There is a good tad-bit about how Coastal helped remind folks what makes college football [& athletics] great.

"Also relevant is that the AAC has already engaged with Boise State and San Diego State about potentially joining. It’d be naïve to not brace for another round of realignment at both the Power Five and Group of Five level"

Do you think there is anyway that the Big XII raids the AAC heavily around 2023 as their deal begins to expire? If they were to say lose 4 teams, 2 to the SEC (OU and UT) and 2 to B1G (KU and ISU) what would happen to the G5? If they don't they may choose to still add two schools, most likely from the AAC.

What happens if the 6 left over invite schools like SDSU, Boise, UH, Memphis, Cincy, and UCF to make Big XII version 3.0?

That would leave the AAC with SMU, Tulane, USF, ECU, Temple, and Navy. Could be that 2 of them also go to Big XII (Big XIV) as well?

With continued success of SBC programs and the downward trend of CUSA mean that we could be raided heavily this time around OR would the markets scheme still take place and CUSA get raided and we sort through scraps IF we wanted anyone else? I imagine the MAC is the only safe conference.

I mean I wouldn't mind the AAC's money or bowl bids but I highly doubt Troy would get an invite. I mean the remaining AAC could just invite the SBC and be done with it! 03-lol

EDIT: I have doubts whether or not we will see 16-20 team super leagues at the P5 but you never know with those people.

Why do you highly doubt Troy would get an invite??

I just don't think we have the "market" appeal for the AAC. Sure, we would bring a solid football team, football history, and good fan support. I don't think our b-ball team is good enough for these guys though. I tournament appearance in 2017, but we were bang average that regular season. We have good women's b-ball but is that our sell?

I can't see the AAC raiding the Sun Belt but if they did I think there are only a handful of teams that would appeal to them.

1. Georgia State - Atlanta Market, Large enrollment
2. Louisiana - Lafayette Market, recent success
3. Coastal - Myrtle Beach Market, recent success
4. USA - Mobile Market, high ceiling
5. Texas St - Well positioned near major markets

Everyone else is just not in a big enough market to appeal to the American.

True, honestly I don’t think the Belt has too much to worry about. If they are looking at Boise and SDSU I think they look to the west again if they need teams or convince Army to join fb only.

In the event that teams like UCF, Memphis, Cinncinati, and Houston get raided from the AAC... the AAC may not have much choice but to take small market teams.

Most of the historically best teams in the G5 come from smaller metro markets... IE: Marshall, Southern Miss, App State, Louisiana, Troy, Louisiana Tech, Liberty, Coastal Carolina, Army, WKU, Arkansas State, etc.

The only big markets team left to pick from that would bring any worth to the AAC is: Boise State, SDSU, UAB, Air Force, and somewhat Georgia State.

That's not many to pick from.

You want to get your team noticed, fill your stadium, sell some tshirts, tune in to ESPN+ to watch your team and then win some ball games.

The CUSA has proven that big city location where no one cares about you=no money and still no one cares about you.

If the AAC were HEAVILY raided, I think if they abandoned the market scheme they could assimilate a wonderful 12-14 G5 beast of a conference. Unfortunately, that is wishful thinking and they would probably bring in the CUSA "markets" like UAB (who is actually a good choice), Charlotte, Rice, etc.

Why would UAB be a better choice than Troy? If you look at the CUSAs recent success in picking "market" teams, Troy would win out. Troy has a more devoted fan base and probably better long term fans. After Bill leaves UAB will they even survive in football? UAB is a tough job in a town of minimal interest. Look at Bartow and basketball, UAB is in a town that the coach is the only saleable item. Pick the wrong coach and down goes interest.

Historically best teams???? Really??? They have literally been to one bowl, and they lost. They also don’t own their own conference championship, they shared. They had a historical run, that doesn’t make them historically one of the best teams in G5. Now had you said East Carolina, I could have accepted that, but sorry, not CCU, not yet anyway.

Not sure we can really call Lafayette and Myrtle Beach "markets" on the level of appealing to the AAC, at least without sustained success in football and a really engaged fanbase. ECU is probably the best comparison to those two as far as market goes, and the only reason they're in is a massive fanbase.

Georgia State and USA are probably the best bets here, but even then, UAB would definitely get the call first.

If the AAC lost a few to the Big XII, I think they would first refill with the original CUSA lineup. Which means UAb and USM would be first up, followed by Marshall. After that it would be the best option out of the rest of the G(4).

Well that would hurt our chances of having Southern Miss and one of the two between Marshall and UAB joining if that happens and those are really the only teams currently in FBS I would love to have.

Agree completely, but AAC would want them for the same reason we would. Better shore up what we have before the AAC comes calling and picks us apart too. No matter how it happens, our happy families will be ripped apart by expansion. Even though we don’t see CUSA as a step up, the AAC is, even though like before, by time you get there it isn’t the AAC that made them who they are.

Not that markets matter all that much anyway, but the only schools you listed where the market is an advantage are Georgia State and maybe Texas State. The Lafayette market isn't even in the top half of the conference, they only beat out Montomery-Selma (#126), Monroe-El Dorado (#143), and Jonesboro (#182).

The original SoCon has dozens of teams and then split apart. Travel was different back then and money was certainly different. Still at some point the conference is going to become unwiedly it would seem. Though $ talks.

Without the AAC’s top teams (Cincy, Memphis, UCF, Houston and if Temple or SMU leave) no matter who replaces them, the money dries up just like with the CUSA, probably faster. If SBC football improves we compete with Mt. West for top G5 conference in football. SBC could get brave and try to invite 2 of the eastern based schools and let the western ones go MW or CUSA

That’s why I think 10 or 12 is best. We really need ULM, Texas St, and South to turn the corner and Troy to play more like they did 16, 17, and 18. Then the Belt will begin getting more and more respect, our media deals goes up, and we don’t need to worry about members jumping ship. We might even be able to poach 2 teams from AAC if they begin to all leave or two of the top CUSA schools.

Myrtle Beach...market? What's that?
