Yeah it makes you wonder if we really have the three best candidates. Sometimes I think we have diversity all wrong. Is it race and gender or is it age, economic background and previous work experience that is more important when it comes to a diversity of ideas?

Don’t we have a strong connection at FedEx? I assume they are more interested in airports and not basketball.

I remember being told the two main reasons Joel Nielsen was hired in 2010 were:

Fundraising ability

Marketing genius

RE: The Joel Nielsen era at Kent State is over
I see a lot of negativity being stated on this board. Do not sell Kent State short when it comes to fund potential. Kent State has not been a primary teachers' college in a long time. I doubt that the $80M fund raising at Miami was achieved by soliciting one donation. I do not know this as a fact, but I would guess it so. As an example at Kent that I am aware of, a few years ago, The College of Architecture needed supplemental funds to finish and furnish the new College building on front campus. Funds were raised from various building supply companies, and the largest gift came from a classmate of mine to the tune of over $10M. I would call this a successful campaign. I can think of some very well known graduates or attendees from the entertainment industry with net worth's of over $100M. One would be surprised to know of the Kent State alums well positioned in industry. I am not saying that fund raising is easy, but I believe that if a talented person could muster some positivity and imagination, funds could be raised. We have to give potential donors some benefit for their investment. It would help by filling the Dix and MACC which gives exposure. I do not have the answers for this, but I am sure that it can be done. Talking about how Kent State can not do it for various excuses, will only defeat us for sure.

GFlash I don’t think anyone doubts KSU’s potential when it comes to soliciting donations and support. But I can tell you, I bet I could fill a 747 with people (myself included) who stopped donating time and money until there was a change in leadership in the athletic department. Now, granted this was before the pandemic and its economic fallout but I would be willing to bet most of those people will give again.

Even Nielsen admitted several times he and his staff had gotten complacent and satisfied (with his salary who the hell wouldn’t?) by simply “plucking the low-hanging fruit” on the KSU donor tree.

I, for one am very enthusiastic and excited about what a new AD can do in that department.

Love your enthusiasthism about Kent State.

Reminds me when I first came to Kent in 2006.

A lot of people I talked to called it a dump, but I saw the potential.

It's there, and I feel it is just beginning to awaken. Having people like you that see it is encouraging to me.

Largest percentage of KSU alumni still reside in
NE Ohio. Engaging capable donors is critical.
Unfortunately, KSU Athletics is now
understaffed personnel wise to compete
with professional fundraisers at the major charitable institutions in the area. We have allowed those that had potential to leave or fired others.
Major Arts institutions, Hospitals, and other Charities have high powered staffs securing donations from disgruntled KSU alumni. ( some are ex-KSU
fundraisers)
We must do better. Competition is fierce.
Academic donations at Kent not the problem. Athletics has been tarnished
by years of recent negative attitudes towards donors and new staff has many fences to mend.
Optimism is great for the future but much work to be done.

This is a very unnecessary cheap shot that says a lot more about you than him. A board like this needs nothing from its participants that reflects poorly on each other. YOUR jock strap needs to be cleaned!!!

BTW ... cleaning jockstraps (floors, windows, showers, etc.) are the kind of jobs that make one appreciate the rare free ride on a FedEX plane for what it is.

Sorry for the rant, but crap like this pisses me off.

Just curious, Did KSU ever settle with PSU, UK or Alabama for the cancellations? I know they were in court earlier.

Dude, it’s a JOKE. Danny is a big boy and I’m sure he can take it. I’m also sure he doesn’t need anyone coming to his defense.

My take, Rescheduled PSU game squares things with Nittany Lions.
Perhaps it will come out that payment is now larger.
Alabama, KY , yet to be heard from

Thanks Cleveland. Literally been 30 years since I was a freshman and some guy hiding behind his computer screen wants make fun of the fact that I was a manager.

It's silly and childish, but it doesn't bother me. What I will say is being a part of a team, being there EVERY SINGLE DAY, the work ethic I learned (while not even getting paid), was invaluable and absolutely led me to post-KSU professional success. And as an added benefit, I have 6-7 really good friends I made during those times that we all stay in touch.

Also, 2 side notes: #1) the equipment managers did all the laundry and #2) I am sure my donations to the athletic department earned me the sideline passes at the LSU, Alabama, and Ole Miss football games as well as the introduction to Dave who was gracious enough for the flight home.

Here are links to the KentWired stories on the presentations of the three candidates for athletic director. All are associate ADs at their current schools.

I thought Killy sounds good, but that can just as easily be the quality of the reporter's story about the event as what the candidate said. And I've been on enough search committees to know that the public presentation is not the biggest factor in the selection.

The decision on these usually comes a week or more after the last interview, longer if there's major salary negotiation. (That's for academics, not sports.)

I'm sure the president has the last word on the hire ... but how active has he been in the process, or is he relying on the committee recomendation.

I ask this because I frankly don't see much 'athletic' expertise on the committee. And while the president has some history from his days at Tennessee ... it is also clear that Tennessee has had multiple issues with some of its hires over the years.

Finally ... on another subject. Unless I've missed something. I find it strange . considering none of these coaches are on the proverbial hot seat - that Joel has not given some protection to his key coaching hires via contract extensions. This is a very common practice by outgoing ADs and one that would cover the FB, BB, MBB, WBB coaches for an extra year on their contracts.

Very interesting.
