Joel Nielsen just left Kent with a parting gift of playing Oklahoma next year.

Yeah who could use 3.5-5M dollars for their athletic budget in a time of financial ruin for mid majors. This will be first year with a new coach so it wont really matter.

When did it become the responsibility for the football players to be over matched physically against the ELITE football teams? Oh and after you generate this money don't expect the funds to enhance the football meeting rooms or locker rooms. No because of department mismanagement and lack of revenue from other sports football will be physically sacrificed.

Actually, it would be fiscally IRRESPONSIBLE to not play buy games. In the process, challenge yourself and see what might work against our conference foes.

I agree in that I have always been more interested in the P5 games that we are in. But we those 3, it probably puts us in the top 10 most difficult schedules in the country. That is too many.

"Challenge yourself"? easy to say when you will be a spectator in the stands and not on the field playing. Football is a hitting game your body absorbs punishment and the compound affect of playing arguably playing 2 of the top 5 programs(Washington is probably a top 20 program} is negative. For the point of "what might work against conference foes" might be a mute point if the time you play conference your starters are injured.
Someone please explain why is it that Kent State plays 3 buy games every year and most MAC schools play one or two. Yet we have the worse facilities in the MAC.

Could be worse. At least it's not Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State.

Agree, I like the P5 games but we could look for more “competitive “
Contests. Maryland this year good example
Winnable game.
Facilities really working against Kent now
Football , Basketball, Track really bad. Outdoor track facility not capable
Of holding a meet.
Others have upgraded to the point where we are way behind
Rehab and training areas Kent excels .
Lots of work ahead for New AD.
Only way to do away with these big money games is
effective fundraising

I'm generally in the camp of 2 money games and no more than 1 against an elite, unbeatable, team. However, right now we're not in normal times and I understand that they need to do what they can to make money. Actually kind of makes me feel good that he's still scheduling to make us money well after he's gone. Long term though, I'd like to get away from 3 unwinnable games where we risk destroying our starters just for money.

You just aren't going to get the payday from a Maryland or an Illinois that you will from an Alabama or Oklahoma. And please....these are college athletes and there is the same likelihood an Alabama kid gets injured as a KSU kid. Anyone arguing any differently is just wrong. Injuries happen because of bad luck, timing, and just awfulness in general. Very rarely at this level is it because of being physically overmatched. You aren't talking about Alabama and their OL pounding on some HS kid on the DL that weighs 175 lbs.

Also, as a side note, and not worthy of it's own thread, the Jim Christian Era at BC is also over.

Maryland is paying 1.5 million while I believe Alabama was 1.9 million.

I'll take the W and 1.5 million thank you very much

I guess you have never had $400k in the bank to know how far that can stretch? Next time you want to b*tch about Ty Linder or someone of the like being let go because of money, remember your comment.

FACILITIES WORKING AGAINST KENT ... leads me to ask what did Kent do when it was the first program in the MAC overall, and the entire state, to have an indoor FB practice facility. Nothing much. Let's have serviceable facilities, as Kent does for most sports. Could some be better, probably, but far from the worse across the board. I think players would rather have a good COA check every month over a glitzy weight room, parents would rather see a quality education center over a lockerroom filled with TVs and computer games.

For the "Bama player is just as likely to get hurt KSU" your opinion. My opinion the Bama player is on the field because he is an elite athlete even my Power 5 standards. He is bigger, stronger and quicker than the KSU player. So who do you think will wear down the other physically. In Oklahoma and Georgia you have this elite athlete. Injuries do happen to both teams it's one thing to have a sprain ankle another to have your QB absorb a pounding because your O line was over matched.
Again have to ask why does it fall on the football team to raise the financial support for other sports?

If Kent beats Maryland I’ll pay Ty Linders salary and rehire Jim Christian as DOBO

RE: The Joel Nielsen era at Kent State is over
We got beat up during the non-conference portion of the schedule just about every year under Haynes. I remember one year we were down to QB3 by conference play and playing a RB at QB by the Akron game. Maybe strength and conditioning was poor on those staffs. I tend to believe playing against physical superior opponents played a role though. You can't tell me that a team being bigger, faster, and stronger in the trenches isn't going to raise the risk of your lineman getting hurt and you absolutely can't tell me it isn't going to increase the hits on our QBs and RBs during those games. More hits and bigger hits on your QBs and RBs = more chance of injuries to key players.

Again though, I understand the decision because of the financial times.

Football gets 85 or so scholarships forcing us to create 85 scholarships for women’s teams. I think they ought to support those sports.

Actually ... I think EVERY starting QB in the Haynes era was sidelined/injured by the MAC schedule every season. Indeed, the only season of relatively recent vintage I can remember with the QB (and even top RBs) making it through non-con play was Spencer Keith's senior season. (And look at that non-con schedule).

Understand WHY Kent does this ... but.
