There is no way CSU has had any dialogue with the MVC. Perhaps they called the MVC but that doesn’t count. Without giving it any thought I can come up with over 30 schools that would be ahead of CSU. I call major BS on that one.

Oh, there could well have been a dialogue. For instance:

CSU: "Is there any way we could get into the MVC?"
MVC: "No."
CSU: "What about as an affiliate in a sport if we get into a conference that doesn't sponsor that sport?"
MVC: "Also, no."

Exactly and that is incredibly disingenuous to report as having a dialogue.

Chicago State isn't as bad as Morris Brown (they're still around, too) but both have no shot at the MEAC or SWAC.

The Summit seems the most likely choice.

People, Chicago State has already been in the Summit and was either pushed out or kicked out. I see them joining the Summit now as a very low probability.

I have said it before and I will say it again--Chicago State needs to stay independent and be firm on joining any conference as anything less than a full member.

They are not that desirable, I get that, but they have value as a member if a conference needs members. Chicago needs to wait and see on the MEAC, OVC, or whoever. Chicago might be a conferences last and only choice as a member, but they need to use that to gain FULL membership. If the conference won't give them that, why should CSU bail them out, only to get booted later when said conference is in better shape.

I'm embarrassed that the WAC kicked them out actually. Without Chicago State joining, the WAC would not be a conference now. They didn't have enough members until Chicago State joined. The WAC did not make sense for them, except for the fact that the WAC was planning to add a Midwest set of teams, which never happened. Not Chicago's fault. But Chicago allowed themselves to be contract members needlessly, because the WAC needed them to exist. They were already an Indy and would have been better off remaining one, and play their abundant local opponents instead not wasting their money flying all over trying to keep schools happy who ended n up turning on them.

Stand strong Chicago State. You can find affiliate memberships for everything but basketball anyway. Don't join anything with FULL permanent membership again.

With less than ten months remaining before Chicago State University exits the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), athletic director Elliott Charles has been in discussion with several Division I conferences. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Ohio Valley Conference, Missouri Valley Conference, Summit League, and Southwestern Athletic Conference are among the conferences contacted, according to Charles, who is identifying conferences that mirror Chicago State’s level of competition and profile.

The final decision as to which conference Chicago State University will call home will be a collaborative process. Chicago State University associate, athletic director for communications Jim Christman, explained in an email to the Defender that student-athletes, community members, the Chicago State University board of trustees, and stakeholders will all have an input. He noted, too, Chicago State University intends to continue to compete at the Division I level. At this time, Winter 2022 is the tentative deadline for a news conference announcement.

“Chicago State University is focused on two priorities: making the best decisions for our current and future student-athletes, and building a competitive foundation across our programs as Chicago’s only Southside NCAA Division I institution,” Christman wrote.

Chicago Defender

Wouldn’t the final decision be basically who invites them? Find it hard to believe they has choices and will take time to decide.

I think that's the "collaborative" part of the process.

EDIT: I guess there's a remote chance that both the MEAC and Ohio Valley make them an offer. But that's a remote chance

I don’t think the OVC is in a position to be choosy. If they drop to seven full members their basketball auto bid will be at risk. That was enough to prompt the WAC to invite Chicago State despite the geographic fit being far worse than it would be for the OVC.

"Dialogue" doesn't mean Chicago State was given serious consideration by the Missouri Valley. A dialogue is a conversation. Often, dialogues involve an exchange of ideas and opinions.

Maybe the Chicago State AD and a Missouri Valley representative had a long lunch somewhere and talked about how Chicago State could become more attractive to another conference and what the Missouri Valley would be looking for the next time it expands. That would be a dialogue.

Just glancing at this situation: Is it possible that the Ohio Valley and the MEAC could both express real interest? Both could use another school, and while Chicago State is well outside the MEAC footprint, it would still seem a good fit as an HBCU.

(Comparable, perhaps, to Central State (Ohio) playing in the otherwise Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.)

I can confirm that they did. It was for affiliate membership for Olympic sports and it didn't really go anywhere, but Elliott wasn't lying about that. They also had numerous talks with the Big Sky for a similar deal. I want to say the sport in question was golf?

Nobody is offering them full membership and Chicago State doesn't have the leverage to wait.

It's not a question of "this league needs a warm body ASAP so hold out for a better deal". Virtually every league has multiple D-II schools interested. It's a question about financial and administrative capacity, not just for Chicago State, but for the schools that will need to fly in on a regular basis. And quite frankly, the last time I talked to him, Chicago State's AD was happy about potentially being a part of multiple leagues, since they could keep their Flo media rights deal and have way more flexibility.

I could absolutely see a world where Chicago State is eventually a full MEAC member. That that world will almost certainly not exist in 2022.

What D-II schools are wanting to move to the MEAC? Only ones w/ an outside shot would be Morehouse, Virginia St., maybe UDC. I haven't heard of any of them wanting to move up.

The Horizon wants their tennis. There will be takers for men's soccer, including possibly the MVC, everyone needs a men's soccer team (the Summit might need a 6th team if WIU moves). Golf can easily find a home, in fact I believe the MEAC offered affiliate for the men, and the Southland is a possibility for both teams. Cross Country and Track can also likely find homes (just a meet).

The hard ones to find homes for are women's volleyball and women's soccer, as those are core sports everywhere along with men's and women's basketball and hardly anyone needs affiliates.

If Central Arkansas leaves for the Atlantic Sun, that drops the conference down to 8. The NCAA minimum is 7. Chicago St could be added as a 9th member buffer just in case any other Southland members decide to leave.

IMO, the Southland Conference will be fine with 8 schools. Adding a school all the way up in Chicago would be crazy.

Heck, I have no idea why the schools leaving for the WAC are leaving.

I think they're fine at 8 as well. My concern for the Southland is if the OVC, Summit, or someone else gets antsy. The Southland is 1 school away from danger and 2 schools away from ceasing to exist.

I'm sure they'll bloat back to 14 in no time.

Maybe the OVC is more poachable than we recognize. Let's say the Atlantic Sun does bring in Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville St. Let's say the MVC does bring in Belmont and Murray St. That puts both the OVC and Southland at 8. Perhaps a merger???

BEPcr07, the A-Sun does have Austin Peay, Central Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky, and Jacksonville State as members.

You make no sense and contradict yourself. Chicago State ABSOLUTELY has the leverage. They can choose to be independent again, like they have done before, and hold out for full membership. I guess a group of 5-7 schools could choose to all find new homes and turn the lights out on their league rather than let Chicago State be a full member versus a contracted member only.

Yes, certain sports will no have a route to nationals by not being in a conference. So what. The only sport at Chicago State to make it to nationals and achieve All American status is in track, which is based on qualifying times. There are other sports that don't need a conference to qualify for nationals.

CSU needs to tell any conference not offering full membership to kick rocks. If Chicago athletics aren't good enough for a conference, they aren't good enough to qualify for nationals anyway. They have all the leverage.

Ehh, they've got 9. Their problem is that they're down to 6 football schools. Chicago State is no help there. Maybe if the OVC schools buy into the idea that having a conference-mate in a big metro area gets you high school seniors from that area, Chicago State has a shot. If you're a Chicagoland kid, Tennesee weather probably sounds good.

OVC should get: ... CSU...AK-LR...UT-A...WIU.. NOW !!!..... They are going to lose Football schools:...EKU...APU...JSU.....Hoop school: BELMONT......
