Chicago State went 2-74 om MBB in the WAC the last 5 years, then cancelled the 2021 WAC schedule.

They don't help the MEAC. The MEAC needs a FB school with 6x the budget and 6x the enrollment of Chicago State, and within footprint.

Chicago State will probably drop down to D-II or NAIA to play similar enrollment and similar budget schools within 2-3 hours bus rides. Or at least that is what they should do.

Chicago St can stay independent and schedule a bunch of nearby road games for money. Round out their schedule against teams from conferences with odd number of members where someone always has an off day when conference play starts. Have a good enough season and play in the postseason CBI. No worse than flying all over in the old WAC. Maybe one day the stars align and they end up in a conference that suits them. Best of luck to them. I tend to root for underdogs.

Maybe that's what Augustana needed was another school to join the Summit League to keep them at even numbers. CSU cant go independent because the NCAA got rid of that in basketball and they aren't leaving D1

A D1 version of Carver.

The NCAA says you can't be independent in basketball? Got a link to that rule?

There's no such rule.

There’s no rule against being independent. There is a rule that says if you’re upgrading to DI you have to have a conference invite.

Being an independent means you have no chance for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Then again, if Chicago State joins a conference they practically have no chance for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament anyway.

All such scenarios have been discussed ad nauseam previously.

You can still BE independent--New Jersey Institute of Technology was a Division I independent from 2006-09, and from 2013-2015. You just have no voice in NCAA governance, as that's all done through conference representation.

There's nothing in NCAA rules against Chicago State being independent. I'm not sure they can put together Division I qualifying schedules in enough sports to qualify as Division I, but I'm not sure exactly what mechanism there is for the NCAA to drop the hammer and kick them out of Division I because they aren't meeting Division I standards.

(Chicago STate didn't suspend basketball because they were low on COVID-free players. They were low on warm-body qualified-students to be on their Division I men's basketball team, period. That probably has a lot to do with the fact that Chicago State's undergraduate student population is only about 10% 18-21 year olds.)

Chicago State has no business remaining in D1, let alone remaining as a legitimate academic institution. I am confident an incompetent decision ends up being made that will only make their situation worse than it is now.

The chance of an NCAA Tournament bid isn’t that important.

However, the guaranteed annual NCAA Tournament revenue distribution that comes from being a part of conference would certainly be important, especially for a low revenue athletic department. That’s a significant issue with being independent in basketball.

What’s wrong with them remaining an academic institution? They’re mostly black and serve a poor community. Are you wanting to take higher education opportunities away from minorities? Sounds snobby to me.

I would think they would want a 14th here. Could Denver rekindle Summit membership for a conference that is southwest oriented?

Summit could trade out Denver for Chicago St.

During the announcement it was mentioned the 14th member will be a Texas school. 7 in the west division, 7 in the Southwest division.

I don't doubt that it would likely be in Texas, but I only see a statement that the 14th team would "align geographically" with the Texas schools.

Correct. It could be Central Oklahoma, McNeese State, or a Texas school

It isn't that much money they'd miss out on. Money games could easily compensate.

Because Chicago State University is basically a scam, a fake school. If there were any real accreditation standard besides "fill out these pointless forms, and add these 20 pages to all your class syllabi", they'd be shut down.

They have their problems, and a lot of them are funding related, but its most certainly not a scam or a fake school. Graduation rates are low, but what are they based on? Largely metrics that don't apply to them honestly.

When you budget is smaller than many high schools, and your enrollment lower, and 98% are on state grants, and your average annual ticket sales are less than a good HS game will gate, and your coaches are paid community college scale, and your average annual donations to the department are about $4 per student athlete, when the school foundation is literally $0 ....

Given the above is all true, I think a Chicago presence is meaningless. They are picking up players sight unseen from all over; Chicago kids know better. Chicago States where you go when not even any D-II schools offer you a scholarship.
