Chicago St could be added as a 9th member buffer just in case any other Southland members decide to leave.

IMO, the Southland Conference will be fine with 8 schools. Adding a school all the way up in Chicago would be crazy.

Heck, I have no idea why the schools leaving for the WAC are leaving.

I think they're fine at 8 as well. My concern for the Southland is if the OVC, Summit, or someone else gets antsy. The Southland is 1 school away from danger and 2 schools away from ceasing to exist.

I'm sure they'll bloat back to 14 in no time.

Maybe the OVC is more poachable than we recognize. Let's say the Atlantic Sun does bring in Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville St. Let's say the MVC does bring in Belmont and Murray St. That puts both the OVC and Southland at 8. Perhaps a merger???

This is a classic case of addition by subtraction for the WAC. Chi State is facing bigger issues, D1 athletics is the least of their worries.

Is this the correct numbers for the WAC?

-9 current members.
-5 incoming members (Abilene, Lamar, SHSU, SFSA, So. Utah)
-1 departing member (Chicago St)

I would think they would want a 14th here. Could Denver rekindle Summit membership for a conference that is southwest oriented?

Summit could trade out Denver for Chicago St.

Denver hates GCU, that's why they left the WAC in the first place.

I like the idea of a trade but I would think that particular trade, in the Summit's eyes, would be like trading a gold nugget for a snail. The idea of West Texas A&M joining the WAC as the 14th member is intriguing. It adds a football program and splits the conference into 7 Texas schools and 7 non-Texas schools.

Texas: Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston St, Stephen F. Austin St, Tarleton St, UTRGV, West Texas A&M

Not Texas: California Baptist, Dixie St, Grand Canyon, New Mexico St, Seattle, Southern Utah, Utah Valley

RE: Chicago State University Announces Plan to Leave WAC in June '22
Chicago State never got out of contract membership in the WAC. they were "term life" insurance. The first contract expired June 30, 2018. But the WAC was not stable so they renewed the contract. It simply runs out June 30, 2022 and wont be renewed.

UTRGV (formerly UTPA) were accepted also under contract. But they worked with the WAC to meet permanent member standards of the WAC, achieved it by early 2017 and were converted to full equity member of the WAC.

Chicago State never made any progress in any area required (budget targets, staffing minimums, facilities, safety, adding sports promised) and so never became an equity partner. When the WAC finally had the numbers for future stability it was an easy call to let the contract expire.

Chicago State has no plans, and probably were lobbying right up to the announcement day to remain. Only when they ran out of time did they make an announcement, to save face. Hurd and the WAC are being polite in saying nothing, or echoing Chicago State's travel concern.

It is very hard to remove an equity member, as they are in effect a partner (co-owner you could say) in the organization. But a contract member is similar to a contract worker, much easier to let go by just letting the contract run out. That is what happened here.

Chicago State has no plan, no money. I looked at a lot of conferences, and I don't even see a home as an affiliate for any of their sports. I think their days in D-I are near an end. They will struggle to schedule.

If their enrollment doesn't pick up that could happen. It would be very odd because their basketball facility is far and away better than anything else in the NAIA right now. Xavier LA's is really nice but much smaller. OTOH, if their enrollment doesn't pick up soon they won't be anywhere at all.

I am seeing some player defections (transfers) to NAIA schools from Chicago State over the last couple of years.

About. Dang. Time.

More on the WAC doing something, anything, rather than CSU leaving.

Now, does ASun take a shot? Or a dying MEAC?

This could also explain why CST cancelled there MBB season. Sort of a **** you to the WAC.

If their enrollment doesn't pick up that could happen.

If it did, it would not be a bad thing. There's nothing inherently superior about being NCAA FCS versus being Division II, III or NAIA.

Chicago State is lucky to be out of the WAC, which was a WACky idea to being with.

Being in the MEAC would be wacky as well, for them and the MEAC.

No disagreement there but desperation can make people do wacky things and both sides may be plenty desperate.

Summit could trade out Denver for Chicago St.

During the announcement it was mentioned the 14th member will be a Texas school. 7 in the west division, 7 in the Southwest division.

I can an understand maybe the MEAC being desperate. It's lost several members the last few years and if loses any more, it is kaput. I mean, by the rules, that's how it is.

But Chicago State shouldn't be desperate. It can always drop down to D2 or NAIA and play in local conferences. The notion that they "have" to be D1 is a psychological fallacy, not a 'real' need.

I don't doubt that it would likely be in Texas, but I only see a statement that the 14th team would "align geographically" with the Texas schools.

Chicago St doesn't help the MEAC. They need football and baseball members
