This veneration of that guy makes me ill, when everyone even tangentially connected to college basketball knows what's been going on for decades (not to mention the crazy ways some of those players actually are accepted into Duke -and stay eligible).

Fred told me before he left that K's deal with Duke was that K could get in anybody he wanted as long as he maintained graduation rates. If you remember, K would not let one of the national championship teams hang their championship banner until Christian Laettner returned to school and graduated, which would tend to support that.

I don't know how that has changed in the era of one and done. Clearly K has gotten in some kids who had no intention of graduating, and did not graduate. I guess maybe he has built up enough goodwill over the decades to be able to get away with it.

Wasnt Coach K someone Rice tangentially looked at it in the mid 70's? One could only imagine....

Offer out to 2024 CG Kobe George. Plays at The Burlington School in North Carolina. No point even trying to analyze his game at this point. He's athletic and can shoot, which is probably all you need to see from somebody who's a class of 2024. I think he's our first offer in that class.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
Looks like 2022 CG Devin Carney took an official visit. I talked a bit about his game on the last page. I still like it on second look. He won't blow you away with his athleticism or quickness, but he has a better handle than I first thought and his ability to stop on a dime, hit mid range jumpers, and step back from 3-4 steps behind the 3PT line will play up his driving ability. Shot 38% on around 175 3s. Not a bad clip and I'm betting that number would increase in college when he doesn't have as much freedom to launch from 30 feet. He's definitely more of a scoring guard than passing guard.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
2022 SG BB Knight took an unofficial visit to Rice a few days ago. But he also just got offered by Illinois. Illinois is a tough school to recruit against because it's good enough academically that Rice's prestige (if it even ever factors in these days) doesn't play as much. I wouldn't be shocked if Knight keeps racking up high-major offers and Rice gets slowly "priced out." Between his shooting abilities and his athleticism, there's much to dream on with him.

Nightowl kindly gave us some info on Knight earlier in this thread and gave rave reviews.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
Couple new offers:

> 2023 big man CJ Barnes. 6-10 and moves like he's got 10 lb. weights around his ankles. That's an exaggeration but he looks very slow and not too athletic. Not to say that doesn't mean he can't be good. Fiedler also played pretty deliberately in HS and look at him now. We're his first offer, and there aren't too many highlights of him out there, so probably best to hold off on analysis for a bit

> 2023 guard Gehrig Normand. Only other offers appears to be from UTRGV. He's very lanky and his movements are a bit quirky. Very good shooter and has a bit of a deceptive burst (not in the lazy trope type of way). But I'm just not sure about his fit in a conference like CUSA which is flush with athleticism. It's possible he's had a growth spurt and is getting used to a few new inches of height, but if not, I'm not sure I see it. But I'm also awful at talent evaluation so it is what it is

I like Mason's game a lot. Prototypical Pera wing recruit. Really good length, athletic, can shoot the ball. Impossible to tell what his defensive ability will be like (that's always the wildcard transitioning to college), but could be a force if his handle gets tighter.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
Looks like 2022 W Arop Arop is taking an unofficial visit. Sounds like he's also planned official visits to Harvard and Vanderbilt. Also holds offers from Columbia and Howard with schools like Stanford showing interest.

I talked about him a few pages ago. Very, very long. Don't think raw is the right word to describe him, because his game has some polish, but he's one of those guys with a ton of potential if properly developed. Especially now when rosters can be bigger because of the senior rules, easily a guy worth going for even if he might not contribute immediately (he very well could anyway). Wouldn't be surprised to see him land a few more power conference offers this summer, though.

I wonder if we are recruiting Riley Shore (6-7 F, Class of 2023). He's the younger brother of incoming volleyball player Shaylee Shore, and looks to be a pretty good recruit of his own.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
Looks like 2022 Guard Chancellor White was on campus for a visit. 6-5 out of Houston. Was committed to East Carolina for a while but decommitted a couple days ago. Offers from Houston, Sam Houston and Oral Roberts. Since he decommitted, says he's gotten calls from the likes of Arkansas, Texas, and Colorado (among others). Easiest way to understand his game is to just imagine the prototypical guards that Scott Pera and Kelvin Sampson recruit. Long, active, etc. Seems like he's still working on his perimeter game, but his shot mechanics looked decent enough in the highlights. Gotta say, I admire Pera's desire to somehow build a team exclusively out of guards and wings. White's game seems very similar to that of Mason, our lone 2022 so far. And as of now, we only have one 2022 spot left.

Martinelli, who I mentioned a couple pages back as somebody who was visiting, received an offer. 2022 wing out of Illinois.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
New offer to 2022 big man Luke Hunger. Offers from a bunch of solid mid-majors (Loyola, Richmond, Boston U, UCSB, Bill & Mary) and Miami. Would classify his size as slightly smaller than Andrew Drone. Comes in a 6-10, 255 pounds. From Canada but plays at Northfield Mount Hermon. People on the Richmond forum seem to like him, and his play the last few weekends has some of the bigger names circling. Haven't seen many videos of him but his movement looks really, really impressive for somebody his size.

Martinelli committed to Elon. Verbal Commits has us with 31 remaining outstanding offers, though the # of active targets probably is closer to 10 or so.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
Recruiting updates:

> New offer out to 2022 CJ Luster. He's a Dallas product with offers from UTEP and New Mexico State. As to his position, and I hope you're sitting down for this, he's a lengthy scoring guard
> 2022 G Devin Carney, somebody whose game I liked and who I posted about a couple of times, committed to Elon. He'll team up with Martinelli next year (side note: Elon has an awesome campus. Not quite the level of Furman, but beautiful nonetheless)
> 2022 BB Knight is hoping to cut his list after July and Peach Jam. I would not be shocked to see some more power conference offers for him during and after Peach Jam. He's visited Rice unofficially, but his first three official visits sound like Illinois, Texas A&M, and Minnesota. Knight has pretty consistently said that he wants to play as a freshman and play in a system that emphasizes his strengths, namely his size, ability to shoot, and ability to come off screens. Rice obviously fits that to a T, but it's hard to turn down the allure of the Big 10 and Big 12. 247 has him as the 159th player in 2022
> 2022 Braeden Moore has visited Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Rutgers, but it still sounds like he's planning on visiting Rice (maybe just because we were his first offer). Reading quotes about his three visits, I'm not sure what he's going to think about Rice. Pera is going to have to sell him hard on the staff, team and system, because the campus feel won't be comparable to that of the big boys. He's a 6-8 wing that 247's composite has as a top-300 prospect
> Doesn't seem like we're still after 2022 G Cord Stansberry. We offered him a year ago but he didn't mention Rice as one of the schools showing most interest. Sounds like the same is true for 2022 G AJ Smith, 2022 G Brendan Hausen, 2022 F Cade Hornecker, 2022 F Kendall Campbell, 2022 F Dom Campbell, 2022 F Josh Reed (probably), and C Duke Brennan.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
New 2022 offer to 6-8 forward KyeRon Lindsay. Plays at John Guyer in Denton. Offers from UIC, UTSA, Northeastern, ODU and others. Seems like some of the bigger programs are sniffing around. Really like his body. Everything he does is smooth and in control. 6-8 and athletic, looks to have a decent handle for his size. Not somebody who's still getting used to his body. Plays with energy on the defensive end and probably somebody who can guard 1 through 4 (maybe 1 through 5...probably why ODU is recruiting him). I didn't see much of his shot in highlight reels which makes me think it's not fully there yet, because with a good shot I think he'd be a high-major player. Plays some circuit ball with CJ Luster, who we offered a couple days ago.

New 2022 offer (another one) to PG Jalen Quinn. Out of Illinois with offers from basically every Illinois school you'd expect. Beautiful lefty shot. His highlights are less PG, more shooter. My math might be off, but I think we have two spots left for 2022 (regardless if Mullins takes a COVID year or not). Pera throwing a lot of offers out there for just a couple spots. Pretty atypical of Rice coaches, who usually prefer a more targeted approach.

New 2022 offer to Jesaiah (Jo-Jo) McWright. Wing who plays at Cy Falls in Houston with offers from a bunch of Texas and southern mid-majors. Can't really give any analysis - the videos I've seen of him are basically shooting montages (he has a sweet looking shot).
