That makes the better conference more impactful, because it adds to an already stellar recruiting pitch. We don't have any recruiting advantages on the men's side except for the education element. A better conference doesn't magically make our attendance woes go away or allow us to become an NIL player.

In all honesty, the athletic department's main basketball focus should be the women. With the right support and a little luck (e.g., not losing Edmonds immediately if we have a good year), there's no reason to think the women can't be ranked (or close to it) every year.

I agree and the highly-rated women recruits are more likely , knowing that there are not likely potential millions awaiting in pro basketball career, to care about a quality education.
In general , the women should also be getting more attention in VBB, and perhaps swimming and track. Who knows, there may be (female) Rice grads who might be interested in getting the right young women , and help with NIL that augments the partial schollies?

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
If I'm ranking our recruiting classes sport by sport, I'd say volleyball is a clear #1, followed by either women's tennis or soccer. In the past, baseball would have been higher than either of those two sports, and maybe it gets to that level again. Let's give women's basketball a couple of years to see if they can get some recruiting classes back-to-back of note.

No other sport on campus does a particularly great job of recruiting highly regarded recruits. That's not to say that good coaching can't develop some diamonds in the rough into elite athletes.

I think the top 100 type recruits are going to wait out conference realignment a bit more before taking a chance on Rice basketball. If the AAC keeps Memphis and SMU (and Temple and Wichita State), then perhaps it's a slight improvement on CUSA. But just marginally. I'm not sure if Tulane, Tulsa, East Carolina and USF are that much of an improvement over MTSU, Louisiana Tech, UTEP and ODU when it comes to men's basketball.

Don't disagree.

I saw a comic recently... and of course it was comedy... but he made an interesting point... he basically asked why women don't support women's sports more/better... and if there were thousands of women attending these events, there would be thousands of men...

What is it that is different where men seem to LOVE something like beer and hot dogs and watching other men play sports that isn't nearly as prevalent in women? Most of the viewership in person of cheer and events like that are the participants and their families. There isn't really any casual audience for that... even if the teams represent a school or an area of town or what have you.

Hey... since he's been brought up here... If anyone knows him personally, please reach out to him. He's been doing better, but could still use a lot of encouragement as he recovers during these tough times. I don't want to get too deep into it without his permission, but ALL of us can use the help of friends from time to time...

and if you happen to know any cheerleaders who might not mind dropping by his place... lol... I'm kidding,,, I'm kidding

Sounds like Glasser is leaving for UCSB. Not sure whether it was expected because he's on the 22-23 roster. Big opportunity for Pera to find a good defensive mind. Not sure he can afford anything else. Has to also act quickly, too.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
Gehrig Normand (2023), who we were after early on but then blew up, committed to Michigan St. Dalen Davis (2023), who we offered back in July, trimmed his list to Murray St, Harvard, Tulane, Kansas St, and Saint Louis. And Matthew Reed (2023), who we offered a while ago, cut his list to Richmond, Tulsa, Colorado St, and Northern Iowa. Not sure whether we were still recruiting Reed or Normand. Davis we obviously offered only a month ago so count that one as a loss

2023 Parker Strauss (offered June 2022) trimmed his list to Northwestern, Colorado St, Wyoming, Lehigh, Fordham, and Southern Utah. And 2023 Carter Lang (offered April 2022) cut his list to Stanford and Vanderbilt.

And also 2023 Jack Janicki (offered July 2022) is choosing to walk on at Wisconsin.

Don't know if he'd accept, but good candidate to replace Glasser: https://usdtoreros.com/sports/mens-baske...ahar/4518.

Was dropped by Steve Lavin in July after basically overhauling the team as his lone assistant, according to Jeff Goodman. Stops at Vanderbilt, Georgetown, and Princeton. Good recruiter, well-respected in CBB. Only issue is that I'm not sure he's the defensive-minded guy who we should be looking at.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
First semi-win recruiting win in a while, it seems. 4-star 2023 forward Keanu Dawes has us in his final 6, along with Texas, Texas A&M, Utah, BYU, and Oklahoma State. Had other offers from schools like Tennessee, Stanford, Texas Tech, and others. Ranked 103 by 247, 89 by Rivals. Talks about his recruitment here: https://www.zagsblog.com/2022/03/01/clas...o-takeoff/ https://247sports.com/college/texas-am/A...191246718/

Not high on our chances (for obvious reasons), but nice to see some good news after the last few weeks of recruiting on both the men and women's side. Says he's currently planning visits to Oklahoma St, Texas A&M, Utah, and Rice, and will sign in the spring. He's arguably the top-ranked 2023 Mormon recruit, so expect BYU to be a heavy player.

To add color to this, he's a 6-8 wing. Can put it on the deck and has a good looking stroke from deep. Plays like more of a guard than forward. Wouldn't exactly call him quick or springy, but he looks stronger than a lot of the lanky wings you see in high school.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
2023 PG Brooklyn Hicks (Washington) has also included Rice in his final schools. Others are Oregon St, Washington St, UNLV, Nevada, Cincinnati, and Saint Mary's. Again, a good group of schools with which to be associated. 6-4 listed as a PG but might play off-ball in college. Athletic and looks long. Definitely looks like more of a slashing guard, though his handle isn't perfect and he's not super quick to the basket. His shot looks kind of wonky. Reminds me a bit of Mullins coming out of HS. Slasher PG/SG who doesn't look entirely comfortable with his shot...likes to attack and can finish at the rim, but doesn't blow by people...active on defense. Hicks is more athletic than Mullins and his shot looks a bit better.

Good 24 hours for Pera, Green, and Powell (and I guess Glasser, who probably helped recruit both Hicks and Dawes).

Another top 5 - Parker Friedrichsen, a 6-4 4-star combo guard out of Bixby, OK (also Class of 2023) has a final five now of Rice, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Davidson and Nebraska. He was committed to Oklahoma State at one point.

Again to reiterate the previous two posts, a pretty good day-plus now for Pera and his staff. If he can get any of those three, that would be big news and perhaps an indication the AAC will help basketball recruiting.

Friedrichsen was ranked as high as 75 by Rivals and 103 by 247. He'll visit Rice on September 2. His quote about Rice: “My very first scholarship offer. Been in my process for two years now, built a strong relationship I talk to Coach (Scott) Pera and Coach (Van) Green almost every day.”

Pera and staff continue their hot streak. 2023 G/F Brady Dunlap is down to six schools: Rice, Providence, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Colorado, and San Diego State. California kid out of Harvard-Westlake. Ranked #83 by ESPN and was ranked as high as #60 by 247 (oddly he fell 59 spots yesterday, quite possibly because schools like Kansas dropped out). Also had "offers" from Kansas, Illinois, Arkansas, Minnesota, and others. "Offers" in quotes because some of these were soft offers. Played on Bronny James' EYBL team and score 16 a game on 46/34/100 splits (leading the team...though, to be fair, they kind of stunk).

His quote about Rice and Pera: "I just recently had a zoom call with Rice. Coach Pera probably gave me my first official offer. He saw me when I was a rising freshman and offered. It’s nice having a relationship that far back. I’m a big relationship guy and he’s been recruiting me ever since, calling and checking up on me. The relationship goes deeper than basketball. The academics is also very good at Rice and having that degree would be very good for my future.”

Wing with a good body who plays mostly on the perimeter and in the midrange. Would be a good fit in Pera's system...checks a lot of the boxes that Pera looks for in a guard.

Looks like an unofficial visit scheduled for 2024 F Greg Guidinger. Don't know much about him outside of his offers, which are all mid-majors.
