RE: JMU @ Towson
Very happy for the road win. Best performance in a long time from 3 and it came from multiple people. Amadi had some big rebounds late and they did not turn the ball over too much. Missed free throws were a problem until Morse made 8 in a row.

Some very bad calls late by the officials. The worst of which was the and 1 on the drive by 11. The guy actually jumped and came down before shooting. One of the worst calls I have seen.

Defense was better today but still needs work. Jacobs did not play well. Wooden and Edwards didn’t either. I thought Christmas had some good moments.

Hope this win isn’t fools gold. 15 threes should equal a W every time. We certainly can’t expect to continue that kind of shooting.

Towson wasn’t nearly as imposing in the post as they have been in the past. They have some good guards though.

We learned a little more about the rotation today. Mensah and Taylor didn’t play in an important game. Morse got more PT and maybe is 100% now.
Not sure what coach By sees in Edwards. That guy plays like a struggling Freshman. There are too many bodies to allow him to start.

I’m still concerned about the rebounding even in a win. It seems to be a bugaboo regardless of opponent.

Check it out kids. JMU is in second place for a league That will use winning percentage to determine the seeds.
How sweet would it be if the Dukes finished near the top and then by the magic of COVID rescheduling get to play the CAA tourney on their home court. If we are getting greedy, maybe the state will have a higher attendance max by March if enough vaccines can be administered. 04-rock

Northeastern Huskies 5-0
James Madison Dukes 1-0
Charleston Cougars 3-2
Delaware Blue Hens 2-2
UNC Wilmington Seahawks 0-0
Hofstra Pride 2-3
Drexel Dragons 1-2
William & Mary Tribe 1-3
Towson Tigers 0-1
Elon Phoenix 0-2

I agree about Edwards. The only reason I can see why Byington starts him is his energy. He and Strickland bring it every night. I feel like those two stand out energy wise.

The difference between this years team and last years team is this years team will take it to their opponent. They have that killer instinct. If they can continue to improve, their confidence will grow and if this team can play with confidence, they are going to compete well in the CAA.

Other stats to note. Lewis with a casual 8 assists today. Amadi with a double double.

Our freshmen guards went 0 fer from the ft line. This has and will lose games for us in the future if it's not addressed. Vado 8-8 from the ft line. Be like vado.

I caught the end of this game after WBB finished up with Elon & I laughed as the Towson announcers thought fouling Vado was the smart move. Watching him drain those FTs felt good.

Had they done their homework, they would have known he was a career 77-78% FT shooter from his two years at Mt Saint Mary's.

RE: JMU @ Towson
They said Vado was a 56 or 58% shooter from the line this year. Not today!

Our freshman guards may have been o fer but Vado and Hodge were a combined 10-10 today. With those two and Lewis in the game late, we should be able to protect leads better.

The Dukes are a better shooting team this year. With more shooting options down the stretch, they should win their share of close games this year which is something they did not do under Lou. No lead was safe with his teams. You could see the fear in his and his players eyes. I don’t see that fear in this team.

Next weekend will be a big test. Split with Northeastern and I will start to believe this is a better than .500 team.

Drexel blew out the Tribe today. They have some good wins this year and close losses to good teams. They may end of being the surprise of the CAA before the year is out.

RE: JMU @ Towson
CoC led Northeastern by 6 with 5 minutes left today, but faltered in crunch time. Otherwise, your world famous and beloved Dukes would be in first place today.

NE is 6-0 and the next best winning percentage after JMU is .500

This thing is Absolutely there for the taking. Covid or no-Covid we will not apologize for winning the CAA in 2021. It counts just the same as other years.

And who does JMU play in 6 days? Northeastern.
Buckle up sports fans. Some very important games are near.

RE: JMU @ Towson
I continue to be happy with the progress in our seasons with the losses and wins.

My goal continues to be we are playing like a top 4 team in the CAA by the end of February, and advance to the CAA Semi's.

I've not be disappointed and on the flipside I'm not blown away by a no sweat "road" win where we are in control the whole game. The team shot nearly 50% from behind the arc and we hit 15 3's. Matt Lewis has the his best day at JMU with 8 assists. Amadi has perhaps his best all around game. We should win in those circumstances. That said we may have lost this game last year. The players are getting more comfortable with each other, and this system. While I don't expect them to shoot 50% on most nights, I do think their shooting % will increase with their confidence in this offense and learning each other. Their defense is already better than what we have seen the last few years.

I like the continued progress. We are not there, but I'm continuing to see improvement every game. We'll see what happens this year, but 2021-2022 season we will be in the hunt even without Matt Lewis, although I think next year you will see lower scoring games.

RE: JMU @ Towson
Well said Dukester. I feel pretty much the same. The one exception is the team being better without Matt. It will depend on how guys grow in this system. While possible, it is far from a given. Also depends on who gets recruited into the program.

I made some earlier comments about his three point shooting not being great but his last two games have been off the charts. He also shared the ball late in the Towson game when TU tried to make a run. Morse pretty much sealed the game with his free throws. The team didn’t have to rely on Matt to do it all. He was willing to share the ball at the end.

Having the ball in Matt’s hands late in games makes sense. I just don’t want the offense becoming him forcing up bad shots against double teams. If he shares the ball, he becomes an even better weapon. He has other reliable shooters on the team.

The Dukes will miss Matt next year. He has great confidence and is presently playing some of the best basketball of his career. The stat line against TU is off the charts. If this becomes a season long thing, he is going to have a great Senior season and JMU will win a lot of games. I want to see him scoring and assisting. If he is hot, shoot the rock. If he isn’t, he can drive and find the guy that is.
