On paper it sounds like guys can go wherever - but what it seems to be used for is coaches to be able to turn over the bottom of the roster.

NIU does have a larger amount of portal transfers leaving than anyone else in the MAC (13 & the next highest is 8). If you look at the schools who are losing players to the portal it is teams with coaching changes, and bottom tier losing G5 teams. Sadly NIU is both of those right now.

Just eyeballing a few other schools:

FSU -13
Notre Dame -11
Oklahoma -13
Texas - 10
Michigan State -13
Michigan -8
Illinois -9
OSU/Alabama/Clemson all have 3 or 4

Toledo picked up kids from Georgia Tech, Nebraska and Penn State

Good luck to Robinson, but viewed him as someone stopping the progress from another WR as they just look at his size.

McCray was a Carey guy too. Like mentioned earlier in this post, I’ve wouldn’t be surprised to see him transfer too based on what’s been happening. Makes sense why Hammock has had these huge signing classes

Didn't McCray get hurt week one? I think thats why he did not play

247Sports did an article about the best available players by position and the first one they listed under defensive line is:

Weston Kramer, DT, Northern Illinois: A four-year starter for the Huskies, Kramer graded out as the team’s top overall defender, per PFF College, this season. He ended a shortened 2020 campaign with 17 tackles, 3 TFLs and a sack. Kramer will be an instant starter for a Power five team.

He will not be an instant starter. He’s no Heflin. Not even close.

Not to be a hater but it would be ironic if he ends up back in the MAC. Grass is always greener, huh?

I think this is going to be an offseason like any other. Guys with eligibility remaining leave the team every year, there's just an official portal for reporting it these days.

According to my unofficial count, 18 guys with eligibility remaining have said they're leaving. That is a typical year. Last year was the outlier when 41 guys with eligibilty remaing left.

41 players with eligibility did not leave last off-season. Hell, even if you added in the graduates they didn't lose 41. They lost 26 with eligibility and 12 graduates.

This list really underscores the amount of fat on this roster...

Some of these guys you look at, see they went literally no where, and wonder what they were even doing on our roster. I would love to see a ton of our guys going to big schools - that means recruiting was on point.

Under Carey recruiting was never on point.

A bunch of guys were walk ons...but even hammocks walk ons make impacts. Hot Rod was an awful recruiter.

Walker & Gosten left this cycle, not last. Hawn & Valentine didn't leave, they retired because of concussions. Otherwise you were closer than correct than I was, there were quite a few PWO's I missed. 17 of those who left were PWO's as far as I remember them.

RE: Portal update
We talk so much about who has left and why and is it Hammock’s fault and does he know what he is doing...So I thought it would be interesting to see a side by side comparison of the positions from the point where Hammock came in after the 2018 season vs. where the roster is right now. Here it is…

QB Then
Childers
Graham
Hall
Ant. Thompson
Wright

QB Now
Lombardi
Fletcher
Rod. Thompson
Hampton
Cassens

Eval: It's extremely likely that there are 3 QB's now that are better than Childers, who was head and shoulders above the rest of his group.

RB Then
Harbison
Nettles
Rowells
Valentine
Jad. Huff
Doke

RB Now
Waylee
Collins
Ducker
Brown
Bolden
Lawson
Gordon
Beiber
Solomon

Eval: The speed the current group has far surpasses the prior group, but we also haven't seen any of them step up and be quite the short yardage bulldozer that Harbison was.

FB Then
Bostad

FB Now
Ratkovich
Bostad

Eval: There really was no FB used in recent years before Hammock and the lone from then is still here now, but Ratkovich if used properly can add a huge dimension for this team as an NFL level FB/H-back. Especially helpful if you look ahead at the TE groups.

TE Then
Brinkman
Crawford
Harmston
Lersch
Brown
DeHaan
Soraghan
Thrower

TE Now
Soraghan
DeHaan
Novotny
Kosin
Mallette

Eval: The TE spot is a total shell compared to what it was. As mentioned above, I expect Ratkovich to be used a lot as an H-Back to offset this, but they have to really hope that Novotny and/or Kosin turn out to be something.

WR Then
Tears
Robinson
Wesley
Tucker
Kokosioulis
Pollack
Mitchell
Segobiano
Brummet

WR Now
Richie
Tucker
Rudolph
Toure
McCray
Travis
Howard
Dozier
Urwiler
Battle
Sikma
Lipscomb
Brueckner
Kelley

Eval: Give me the current group any day and twice on Sundays (Hello Mr. Richie). This is not even close! Robinson is an addition by subtraction since he was a handless black hole and Richie is better than the first group combined on his own. When you don't even have to mention a guy who was an All American as a KR as a true freshman, you know it is on an entirely different level.

OL Then
Veloz
Perez
Patten
Olsen
Cox
Roberts
Hawn
Potter
Webster
Warner
Gueths
Dassow
Schlee
Rozulmowski
Reeves

OL Now
Patten
Cox
Potter
Zschernitz
Champe
Lippe
Engstrand
Rios
Pitcel
Buss
Webster
Vicula
Thompson
Wilty
Hoth
Pinnick
Mackinnon
Schooley
Beyer

Eval: This one is hard for several reasons. 1) Cox, Potter & Patten as holdovers have obviously improved with experience and age. 2) Most of the current group we have not seen yet. That being said, considering what we have seen out of Champe & Zschernitz, and the sheer size of a lot of the guys we haven't seen, as well as the larger number of the group as a whole, I'm of the opinion that the current group will compare really well if we look back in a few more years.

DT Then
Heflin
Kramer
Griffen
Kelly
LeRoy
Hughes
Webster

DT Now
Ester
Griffen
Taylor
Hugunin
Jordan
Haberman
Ontengco

Eval: 2018 group wins easily here. Ester, Griffen and Taylor are good players, but they are not yet at a comparable level to Heflin, LeRoy, Kelley and Kramer. Check back in a few years and it could be a different story, but for now the prior group wins.

DE Then
Lorbeck
Wynne
Denton
Kennedy
Wright

DE Now
Thomas
Oppung
O’Malley
Mattox
Davis
Jennings
Johnson
Williams
Rempel
Brunner
Waskow
Wilson

Eval: Another tough one because the current group is very young and mostly unseen. I think it would be an endless debate between Lorbeck and Wynne vs. Oppong and O'Malley, but the second group are freshmen who have played 6 games thus far...If any of this current group develops at all, that would make it a pretty easy decision.

LB Then
Jones-Davis
Deveaux Jr.
Pugh
Cole
Labus
Gay
Bonds
Gregory
Parker
Harmon
Jennings

LB Now
Pugh
Deveaux Jr.
Cole
Rayner
Rattin
Jackson
Tewes
Kopp
Gay
Appolon
Asuquo
Whitsey
Hamm
Nelson-Douglas
King
Hernandez
Harmon
Parker
Dominguez
Redmond

Eval: 3 of the top 4 are the same guys. Jones-Davis was great, but Rayner is a stud as well. Rattin/Labus are very similar players. Jackson looked decent in his short stints and he is still just learning the position and getting stronger. I've been watching Asuquo down here in TX since he committed and he is GOOD. This is likely going to be a strength of this team going forward just as it has been in the recent past.

Safety Then
Williams
Foster
Smith
Thomas
Earl
Ross
Covington

Safety Now
Hansen
Lafayette
Brown
Dolphin
Ross
Earl
Laffin
Hoffmann

Eval: Lafayette has the potential to be better than Williams, Foster and Smith but he has to actually do get there. The rest of the current group are a serious question mark if they can get to the level of those three guys. Like DT, this is a spot that they really need to have something in these young guys or it is going to be major trouble.

CB Then
Haney
McKie
March
Hall
Harris
Todd
Walker
Rivera

CB Now
Thomas
Gandy
McGee
March
Rogers
Prophete
McGarrell
Kalomo
Byrd
Myles
Jammeh
Lambert
Lacey

Eval: I thought Haney, McKie and Walker all had a lot of potential when they arrived at NIU. Haney and McKie really struggled before they left, but they were young. Walker looked good in his one game before getting hurt. Really these are both groups that are nothing but equal question marks. Bad then and bad now, both with potential to grow. We know how it turned out for most of the first group, they aren't here anymore. The current group needs to pan out much better considering how many CB's have left under Hammock.

Special Teams
Richardson & Ference are the same so really all there is to say is they have gotten better and older and their potential replacements are on the roster in Woodill & Foley. Rudolph is the best returner we have had since TommyLee Lewis. I expect all the speed of the last two classes to be a big benefit on special teams in the future.

Thank you thank you thank you for this.

I've been watching Asuquo ever since we offered him. There's a kid from my alma mater who I thought was pretty good named Malachi McNeal. He too plays MLB, and I was wondering why in the hell we didn't make him an offer. Then I saw Asuquo's tape and instantly realized why. He's day and night a better player than the kid from my hometown. Reminds me of Kyle Pugh with more speed.

The only thing I will challenge in your assessment, is putting Lafayette over Mykelti Williams. Mykelti was a 4 star out of high school, and looked every bit the part when he was with us. He didn't have the speed for the next level, but he was a very smart player who was sideline to sideline with his enforcement. Hopefully, you are right and he does give us more than Williams, because it would be awesome to have another Huskie safety in the NFL.
