You need some close, controversial games to light the fuse. Unfortunately our fan bases don't have much in common as far as friends and relatives going to each school.
Your last sentence is very key to this topic. Goring up in northern VA, I knew a lot of people who went to JMU, VCU, W&M, Towson, GMU, etc. I think a lot of ODU fans did too, and those schools had long standing rivalries in the state and in a conference. We may have history with UAB and Charlotte, but do you think the average high school age student going to ODU knows many people going to either school or know about the rivalry unless they're told? That goes for most CUSA schools I would think as well

RE: What Fuels Our Rivalries?
I hate the fact taunting the Dukes with "What does JMU mean? Just Missed U.Va." used to be one of the favorite chants from the student section. Now it seems most people from Norfolk would be hard-pressed to find Denton, Texas on the map.
The "Safety School" chants were also fun during men's soccer games.
I hate CUSA to the depths of my soul. The barbs between the regional rivals our schools used to sell out games against one another was part of the fun. I miss hating the Pukes with the same ire. VCU can still suck it, though.
