Looks like he is staying and getting a new deal

Good for continuity and recruiting relationships. Would be fibbing if I said I wasn’t looking forward to Gino getting the job. Hopefully some other program doesn’t come for him while he’s waiting for his turn.

Meh. I guess stability is a good thing with the team we have returning.

I’d prefer not to lose both major coordinators. Even though I’m not a huge Denbrock fan.

Build into his new contract that he doesn’t get to call plays inside the 10 yard line.

Stability is good. And the offense improved dramatically this season after a shaky start. So I take this as good news and hope that the remaining openings are now filled quickly and our focus as fans can shift to spring football practice and the '21 season.

With the amount of interviews he has taken or least humored in the last few years, I'm guessing he'll be gone sooner or later and Gino will step in. If the offense is solid this year, he'll be gone IMO.

That bothers me some. How many programs has he interviewed with? I get that you have to explore interest from another team but Vandy for example? That ain't the same as a top P5 program. This seems to me about getting more money in his pocket. There's no comparison between him and MF. I'm ready for Gino and I hope it is next year or the year after at the latest.

I mean...he has interviewed for less jobs than Fickell...

Whether we like it or not, this is just how it is in college football. The coaches interview all the time-- sometimes formally and other times informally. Its not like the industries that we all work in where if you are out interviewing and your boss finds out you can be sent packing. Gone are the days where you have Bud Foster as an assistant at Virginia Tech for 32 years. These guys today are like nomads-- 4 years is a long time now, even at the P5.

I could be wrong but I have this feeling the flirtation with Vandy was leverage for a pay raise from UC. Denbrock knew Freeman was going to leave and UC might not want to hire two new coordinators at the same time.

Yep, same with Marcus.

I like Gino and what he has meant to UC. I get the sense that he is an up and coming star and I am glad he is part of the staff. All that said, there is something to be said about experience and continuity. Dembrock provides both. CLF has shown that he identifies solid coaching talent and the results don't lie. I also believe he knows what he wants in an OC and would have sent Dembrock packing if he didn't meet those needs. If Gino is patient he will be our OC in the future. My guess is Fick will give him more responsibility, even if informally to keep him engaged.

Bolded, good take and I agree. If Denbrock is back as reported here, I suspect there will be something extra in his paychecks going forward. And I wouldn't rule out some pay and/or title upgrade for Gino if Fickell feels he's clearly in succession for OC in the future.

Gino is already QB coach/Passing game coordinator. I imagine associate HC is something that can be added (Enos was this). Will be interesting to see what Denbrock's new contract will be and if it includes an additional title. Regardless of all of this, Denbrock has adjusted well over the years and it'll be nice to bring back almost everybody on that side of the ball this year.

RE: Denbrock interviewing for OC at Vandy
It's often said that 99% of college football fans would like another offensive coordinator as they always want more. Our overall rankings were mid 20's which considering our defensive focus had us within some clock management of a perfect season. If there is anything that clearly needs to improve it's the accuracy of the downfield passing attack. I'm not sure how much of that is on the offensive coordinator. I believe Denbrock's contract was up this year so i don't really blame him for listening to any overtures. With the paydays being thrown around a guy in his mid 50's should be looking for them.

I would guess that Crook would get AHC (if anyone), he's as important as any position coach to what Fickell wants to do here, and that would give him more clout and a worthy raise.

^^ Crook, IMHO, might be the most unheralded coach on this staff. For years everyone brings up Fick, Free, Gino, Mickens, etc butCrook has been the lead recruiter for the big bodied OL we have brought in here. In addition he coached up a line a few years ago made up of former walk-ins, a hockey player, a guy from the Bahamas, etc when Mike Warren was breaking school records.

I imagine a Run Game Coordinator title and a raise might come to Crook at some point. He deserves the money - title is just a title.

Which makes me think - when a team has a Passing Game Coordinator and a Running Game Coordinator, who is responsible for RPO and Wildcat plays? Sorry I'm getting too deep on a Friday.

I know there are quite a few WV fans who would like to have him back.
