OT: WAC Football pretty much official
Conference has called a press conference to "announce a new exciting sports sponsorship" Included in the call are the presidents for Stephen F Austin and Sam Houston State.
RIP Southland, we hardly knew ye.
As expected, they have a long term goal of returning to FBS...

RE: OT: WAC Football pretty much official
Pete Thamel reported WAC would be adding two additional schools along with the defecting SLC Texas schools and Southern Utah (either Division II or raiding for other FCS school).
I’m curious as to who those mystery two will be

Who knows. Atlantic Sun is preparing a Similar press conference as well that will announce UCA, Jacksonville State, and Eastern Kentucky as new members. I guess they are looking to start football and compete with the WAC.

No way the new WAC invites Idaho. They are a dead end program, unfortunately.

Didn’t realize JxSt was headed out of the OVC. The trickle down is going to be interesting to watch. Who moves where, do DII schools move up to fill some open slots in those conferences. Big news would be if an HBCU leaves the SIAC, SWAC, SIAC or CIAA for another conference.

Idaho is currently in the Big Sky, but if they have desires to return to FBS, this is the vehicle they need. It’s possible they are one of the unnamed schools.

What if it takes 5 years longer than they thought, what if the competitive (financial) realities make it so it never happens at all? Idaho won’t move until they *know* the WAC will go FBS.

So they're killing the OVC too?

Is it possible that UTA gets a WAC invite at all? Could the Southland contact Little Rock and see if they have any interest? They both have a FBS home should they want football in the future but it doesn’t seem likely either will anytime in the near future. Don’t think it benefits either of them I’m just curious if they would be on their radar or if the Southland looks at DII schools to backfill themselves back up to 10 members. They would have 6/8 yeah? Maybe try to go to 8/10?

I will be curious to see what the SLC does moving forward. They have six football teams now. HBU, IWU, McNeese, NWST, Nichols, and SELA. Plus they have UNO and A&M-CC as non-football members. I don't think Texas has anyone left to add to the SLC now that UTRGV and Tarleton are in the WAC. The only decent DII team left is West Texas A&M. Maybe the SLC could look eat towards Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee. With the Atlantic Sun adding teams, it'll be harder for the SLC to get decent replacements. SHSU and SFA have been carrying water for the SLC for a while, the SLC was never an overall good conference and it just bottomed out. McNeese getting the worst of it since the actually care in Lake Charles.

I have seen some rumors of Texas Southern and PVA&M leaving the SWAC for the SLC. I guess they could keep playing SWAC teams in OOC games to keep those games alive. I just don't see that happening.

That was a different time with different factors.
Why would Idaho, who intentionally moved down to FCS, want to join the FBS again?
They could barely afford FBS while they were in the WAC last time, and they're not even competitive in the FCS as we speak.
The Big Sky actually gives them some old rivalries AND opponents within driving distance. Why move to WAC in hopes of going back to the FBS, and go back to struggling with the same issues of budgets, travel, recruiting, and winning?

SWAC doesn’t offer a playoff berth to their champions. Access to that title might be enough to draw them away from the other HBCU’s

The primary reason for SWAC not sending teams to the playoffs was due to their preference to play classic games around the same time period playoffs start (and last few years having the MEAC and SWAC champions face off in the Celebration Bowl/Defacto HBCU championship). Now that FAMU and BCU both are bailing on the MEAC for the SWAC (and ive read there maybe further defections from MEAC) I wouldn’t be surprised if MEAC ceases and depending on how SWAC might expand and adjust their schedule may eventually re-apply for becoming eligible to send teams to playoffs

Not so sure about that:

I opened the link... I'm afraid I don't follow...
What does Idaho's economy have to do with the University of Idaho football program being a dead-end program?

It’s a perfect opportunity for UTA to restart football, play in an FCS conference for a couple years then the whole conference moves up. I can’t imagine they were as close as some speculated with the Les Miles move to restart, and then completely abandon it when Les goes to Kansas. Either that, or they knew this WAC move was coming and they were waiting for this moment.
Good luck UTA fans, time to get the masses moving on this if you want football again.
