Shocking, some respect
Consider how often the MAC gets overlooked, it's shocking to see even a small measure of respect.

Final AP College football rankings

1 Alabama (61) 13-0
2 Ohio State 7-1
3 Clemson 10-2
3 Texas A&M 9-1
5 Notre Dame 10-2
6 Oklahoma 9-2
7 Georgia 8-2
8 Cincinnati 9-1
9 Iowa State 9-3
10 Northwestern 7-2
11 BYU 11-1
12 Indiana 6-2
13 Florida 8-4
14 Coastal Carolina 11-1
15 Louisiana 10-1
16 Iowa 6-2
17 Liberty 10-1
18 North Carolina 8-4
19 Texas 7-3
20 Oklahoma State 8-3
21 USC 5-1
22 Miami (FL) 8-3
23 Ball State 7-1
24 San Jose State 7-1
25 Buffalo 6-1

Others:
Appalachian State 9-3 / Tulsa 6-3 / Army 9-3 / Oregon 9-3 /
Memphis 8-3 / TCU 6-4 / UAB 6-3 / Washington 3-1 /
Nevada 7-2 / NC State 8-4 / Wisconsin 4-3 / Marshall 7-3 / Virginia 6-4

What a ball buster to have two MAC teams ranked ahead of Oregon, TCU, NC State, Wisconsin, and Marshall

Makes me feel better about 2 of our 6 losses.

Probably a realistic ranking for both MAC teams. A shame we're so surprised to see them getting their accolades.

What is crazy to me is Marshall firing their head coach Doc Holliday after going 7 and 3 and having a pretty good career record.

Bizarre. But I do recall that one of their donors had it out for this guy for years. Thinking he was just okay and that Marshall was supposed to be great. It was the governor of West Virginia.

Some tidbits from The Athletic.

https://theathletic.com/2318660/2021/01/...te-alabama

Quote:Five teams finished ranked for the first time

They are...No. 23 Ball State and No. 25 Buffalo.

Quote:And despite not starting its season until November, the MAC got division champions Ball State and Buffalo into the final rankings — as many final ranked MAC teams as the previous 10 seasons combined and its first time with multiple ranked finishers since 2003.

Quote:The final distribution of ranked teams by conference is...two for the Sun Belt, two for the MAC, one for the AAC, one for the Mountain West, one for the Pac-12, two independents and zero for Conference USA.

Man, the MAC was so good in 2003. Miami was obviously special, but that BG team was one of the best MAC teams in the past 50 years, too. Not to mention NIU not far behind, and UT and Marshall (I think?) were really good, too. I’m not talking “MAC good,” rather the teams were all really good within the realm of the D1-A football footprint.

I was a junior at BG in 2003, and man, what a time to be a fan of not only BG, but the MAC as a whole. Unfortunately, college football has changed so much in the time since that another 2003-like conference probably has little chance of happening again. That’s a pretty depressing thought.
