Yeah, Hohokam is one of the older Spring Training facilities in the area (and shows it), but it's probably cheap and works for the WAC's purposes.

There was an not an indoor track & field championship on the docket. Was that COVID-related or due to the amount of schools sponsoring the sport?

With the Texas additions, it looks like we'll have ample teams involved and probably we can host in Texas! :)

RE: WAC has “big announcement” Thursday...
With the basketball conference tournaments, WAC schools are eligible after two years but still can’t play in the national tournaments for four years. I know Tarleton isn’t able to play in any of the national tournaments for four years.

Does the two year rule apply to any of the other conference tournaments?

My guess is if the rules haven’t been changed now, they won’t be. With the new additions and all being eligible, there is no longer a need for teams.

It looks like Indoor T&F has been pretty locked into the Ford Idaho Center (Nampa, ID) since 2015-16. I don't know what the connection is there. Outdoor T&F looks like it travels more across a few different member/community sites (e.g. UVU, UTRGV, etc.)

Wait, What? Does this apply to all new members or are these restrictions for schools transitioning to D1?

My question was referring to the transitioning schools, not today’s add ins.

It only applies to schools transitioning to D1. Can't play in the NCAA or NIT for 4 years. Can still participate in conference tourney's, if the conference allows it. The WAC did not allow this for GCU and others but changed the rules for CBU, TSU and DSU because the tourney was only going to have 6-7 teams participate.

My understanding is that this is for teams transitioning to D1. Since the new additions are already D1, this rule would not apply.

At least that's how I understand it.

GO AGGIES!!!!!

RE: WAC has “big announcement” Thursday...
Letter from Ryan Ivey to SFA fanbase.
===
Membership will be effective July 1, 2021, meaning, we will be in the Southland Conference for the next 6 months.

Our intention was to remain in the Southland Conference until June 30, 2022, but recent decisions by the remaining Southland Board of Directors have caused us to move that timeline up.

We are disappointed in these actions, but also understand and respect the nature of the situation.

The WAC will feature 13 institutions in two divisions: Southwest and West.

Southwest Division will include all the Texas institutions: SFA, Sam Houston, Lamar, ACU, Tarleton and UTRGV
West Division will include all the other institutions: Grand Canyon, New Mexico State, Cal Baptist, Seattle, Utah Valley, Southern Utah and Dixie State (located in St. George, UT)

Note: At this time, Southern Utah is still planning to join on July 1, 2022, and Chicago State will be exiting on June 30, 2022.

The two-division structure would maximize geographic proximity in the Southwest, while minimizing travel in non-football/basketball sports.

A significant part of that strategy is the formation of an FCS football conference
within the WAC that would include 6-9 schools.

Current football playing members will be Lamar University, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State, Abilene Christian, Southern Utah, Tarleton State, Dixie State

New Mexico State will continue to play at the FBS level as an independent.

UTRGV has provided a letter of intent to begin an FCS program effective preferably with the 2023 season and no later than the 2024 season.

During the initial year of membership football-playing institutions will commit to an analysis of all implications of a move to FBS.

The Conference will seek a 14th member which will sponsor football and will align geographically with the Texas Division.

All members will be committed to consistent web streaming with applicable broadcast standards to maximize ESPN distribution (or other potential providers) of Conference content.

There will be a combined total of 20 Conference sports 10 men's and 10 women's.

The Conference basketball tournaments will be played in Las Vegas.

The basketball tournament field size will be determined based upon the available arena dates and other factors.

All other championship sites and field sizes will be determined by the new membership structure with the expectation for equal divisional geographic distribution and/or rotation.

Only D1 transitioning teams are ineligible for 4 years. All the SLC teams will be eligible for the WAC Auto bid when they join. Not sure why there’s any confusion about this.

There is no confusion on my part. I was just asking if anybody knows if the eligibility rules for the conference basketball tournament are the same as the other conference sport tournaments.

I think West Texas A&M and Texas A&M Commerce are the two top candidates. They both have football attendance in line with the other WAC newbies and above any of the remaining Southland members in Texas. Enrollments are comparable. WT has advantages in facilities, endowment, market (Amarillo MSA), and basketball prowess (32-1 and ranked third in D2 last season). Commerce has a big advantage in proximity to the other Texas members, and has finished higher in the Lone Star Conference football standings over the past several years. I don't know how their athletic budgets compare.

Hey all. Sincere congrats from a former conference member here!
It's great to see the WAC prosper after some years of uncertainty, and some of, if the WAC would even survive at all. Member schools of late have done a great job rebuilding up this conference. Best wishes to all going forward.

I’m gonna respect the request not to talk about future additions to the WAC today so I’ll wait till tomorrow to offer my thoughts.

Thanks. Yah, its been a while. I check in here from time to time, and still follow the WAC on social media.
Maybe we'll cross paths again in an OOC game or so in the near future. Take care.

I think the facility in Nampa is the only dedicated indoor track facility with spectator seating (with designated indoor T&F specifications) west of, oh, Fayetteville AR. Could be wrong and wouldn’t mind being corrected.
