Yes, the track is in active use by the women's track and field team (UH doesn't sponsor men's track and field). It was just upgraded in 2019 at a cost of $2 million.

The UH football team has never played on campus, however prior to Aloha Stadium's opening in 1975 the team's home games were held less than half a mile from campus, first at what is now Moiliili Park from 1909 to 1925 and then at the old 25,000-seat Honolulu Stadium (semi-affectionately known as the "Termite Palace") from 1926 to 1974.

The existing lighting should be adequate for night games.

Ahh Hawaii night games...the favorite games ever for east coast insomniacs and drunk guys after a night partying.

If Hawaii has the space on campus then why not build the new stadium on campus? This site looks like a really nice location for an FBS sized stadium.

This particular structure obviously needs more seating, but it seems like a project worth doing.

Also, I have fond memories of UH. Bama went out for 2 games in 2002 and 2003. I was unable to make the trip, but it was a great thing. Hawaii made the return trip in 2006 I believe. I remember watching that game on PPV(how times have changed...lol) and the broadcast booth was split between an Alabama guy and a Hawaii guy. It was a fun series.

Great question. The answer is in the UH campus photo below. You can more easily see how hemmed-in Ching Field is by (clockwise) parking garages, the tennis complex, the softball stadium, grass practice fields for football and soccer, the baseball stadium, the swimming and diving facility, and athletics offices. This lack of space is the main reason why a full-sized on-campus stadium has never been seriously considered. The other big concern is that the campus is in a heavily urbanized area and 40K fans trying to get in and out on game days could literally gridlock much of central Honolulu.

Regarding those UH-Bama games at Aloha Stadium, I attended both and was super-impressed by the Tide fans. A large number flew over to the Islands to support their team and they were great folks and enjoyable to talk to. Best visiting football fans ever in my opinion and I've been going to UH games for 30 years.

That record will stay unbroken unless some university in Guam joins the NCAA. Even Alaska is closer to Florida than Hawaii is to Maine.

Maui and Oahu are 116 miles apart. Wow. Guessing many Hawai’ians never leave their island then. Are news stations island-specific?

All of the local television news programming originates on Oahu and is broadcast to the other islands via networks of satellite transmitters.

The other islands do have their own radio stations and newspapers.

Personally I've been to almost all of the other islands but my last inter-island trip was five or six years ago. Now that there are direct flights from most of the islands to the Mainland, folks throughout Hawaii are as likely to head off to San Francisco or Los Angeles or Las Vegas as they are to travel inter-island. There was a time when families would make trips to Oahu for shopping but the expansion of big box stores to the major islands and the emergence of online retail has pretty much eliminated the need for that.
