Smith is amazing - and LSU fans around here are still angry and perplexed that a kid like that who grew up 30 miles from Baton Rouge first committed to Georgia and then to Alabama - but you have to worry about his size. He is so thin, you have wonder if he can stand up to NFL hits. Yes, a guy like Justin Jefferson just had a great rookie year at 6'1" like Smith, but he weighs 205 pounds. Smith probably weighs 170 in his uniform.

Well, given how the Eagles have one of the worst GM’s in the game, you probably just gave him a reason to pass on Smith. That frame...they already drafted a Smith “type” (body frame) with Reagor last draft. And I don’t know if the Eagles can keep drafting receivers so high. They need help everywhere. So you can pass on him, even if he’s the best on the board.

yeah real possible. He turns 86 before the start of next season...

I could see them possibly having him do 1 more game at the start of next season if crowds are allowed to send him off right.

He's been in visible decline for several years now. He's entering Lou Holtz land where you think you know what he said but you're not really sure.

He was choking up a bit picking Brutus and saying how he was staying loyal with his first pick. If this was his last year it's a shame he had to spend it all from his pool. They did a great job with his pool though for the 60 seconds they'd bother to show it per broadcast.

#2 is insane. Saban looks way younger than Bryant did at that age.

That's modern nutrition and exercise. The other night, Tom Brady tied George Blanda as the oldest QB to win a playoff game, and they showed a picture of Brady (now) and one of Blanda in 1970, when he was 43 and won his playoff game. Blanda looked 65.

Bryant was a heavy drinker and smoked like a chimney. Even by the standards of his day, he lived an unhealthy lifestyle. Some have said it was a miracle he lived as long as he did.

But I do agree, he looks like ancient in those old pictures. I'm not terribly old, but I don't know that I've ever seen many people around 70 that looked worse.

Solar radiation accelerates the aging process. I knew many people who looked like Bryant and I know because I was around him on several occasions and knew what he looked like. No doubt that smoking and boozing contributed to his issues, but I knew plenty of teetotaling Baptist farmers who looked every bit as decrepit as Bear. He grew up working as a kid in the fields and even as a coach he spent oodles of time in the sun. Where do you think they get the term "Red Neck" from? They were poor white field workers whose skin was usually burned around the neck and ears on the arms and back of the hands. In those days society women never wanted a tan as it was a sign of a lower classed woman to have a tan.

I sawed logs, stacked lumber, stacked cross ties and shoveled sawdust. I was a Red Neck in its original sense of the word before other connotations were added as pejorative. I played tennis, deep sea fished, and hung out at the beach too. I still garden and work in the yard. I will die a grizzled old "Red Neck".

What hurt Bear was the boozing. I would think his liver was highly stressed. The lifestyle of the Coach and the hours he put into that are what, with the booze which was mostly a downer to get to sleep and unwind from stress, that did him in. But so folks know Bryant was not a fall down drunk and I never knew anyone who had seen him that way. He was a hard social drinker. But that was common through the 50's and 60's in post WWII America. Go back and watch the old TV shows or even Mad Men and you'll see the culture. Everyone of my friends homes had a tea cart with booze on it and most had a small refrigerator in which they kept the mixers for cocktails. Everyone's parents came home from work and drank. The military had entire social games made up around drinking like dead bug and hit my smoke.

So if people think Bryant was a drunk they are wrong. He was what was known at the time as a hard drinker. The distinction being conduct and setting. He was driven, tough as nails, moody, but an avenging angel for his players if they put out, and a hard assed demon if they didn't. By today's standards what he did at the Junction while at A&M would have drummed him out of the coaching profession by virtue of social media outrage.

Screw social media! I still like old bastards. You can trust them. And you know who Bear called the toughest man he ever met? Shug Jordan whose WWII record spoke for itself. I despised Bear for beating Auburn so frequently, but you had to respect him as a man who came from nothing to establish himself as an icon of his times through excellence, imperfect as he was. But isn't that all of us if we are honest and unpretentious. What I despise about life now is how a bunch of hypocrites have set up a world where a man or woman can be crucified by one character flaw, when every damned one of us have them. Smoke that over!

And for the young a point of context: Those who fought WWII didn't have 1 year tours of duty. If you entered the War in '41 and you survived you likely fought until late '44 and into early '45 before they ever considered you eligible for relief. It's one thing to think if you can survive a year you are out. It's quite another to think you are there until you get killed or win. In the wake of that War drinking was a major stress release from the hell and gore and horror they experienced for 1 to 4 years, and longer if you were British, Canadian, Australian, German, Italian, Japanese or Russian. The Cold War years were no thrill either. Everyone lived under the stress of Nuclear Annihilation and all of us had duck and cover drills at school which we knew were a damned joke! The kids made fun of the instructions to Duck and Cover by saying it was really Bend Over and Kiss Your Ass Goodbye! So you need to grasp that ethos to understand the alcohol use and social acceptance of the day. They didn't have valium and opioids to phase out with and Weed wasn't an acceptable outlet socially or legally. There was nothing lower than a pot head in 1960. Grasp all of that and you have a clearer picture of life in the United States from 1946 through 1968 and the world of the emerging Boomers.

There are a lot of beautiful women today in their 40s and 50s. I live in a fairly large, suburban neighborhood of upper middle class people--- none of the guys in my neighborhood married ugly women. Most of these women do not work outside the home and spend a couple hours a day exercising and eating nutritiously. My wife is attractive, but there are a couple of these women that are just jaw-droppers.

On the other end of the spectrum I do agree there are a lot of obese people who are not taking care of themselves. A lot of the women I mentioned above though have young daughters that look like their mamas and take care of themselves. Its sad to see a 20 year old man or woman who are a hundred pounds overweight, unkempt, putting harmful things in their body.

To that effect: when the weight comes off, it can look like the years shed, as well.

No doubt the sun ages you; UV is legit. I had a political science teacher in high school. She was 40ish but looked 60 because of the constant tanning. She way over-did it. Drank like a fish I heard, too. Didn’t mind her, but she always gave off the vibe that she was heading to the bar or hitting the shore every Friday afternoon.

Corso is an institution and a great ambassador for college football. But yes, he clearly is near/at the end of his rope, and it is sad that he had to spend what was likely his last year doing Game Day at home at a pool.

God bless him.

What is so amazing with Bama now is that they will be having their 7th different offensive coordinator in the last 10 seasons next year. And what at least 3-4 defensive coordinators in that same period. Yet keep on keeping on.

Pretty easy to score with that group of receivers, those linemen and Mac Jones.

Look at the talent they have stockpiled.
According to 247, Alabama has committments for next year from (just their top 10):
national rank and state of player
#4 FL
#10 TX
#14 FL
#18 AL
#34 MI
#45 AL
#50 FL
#59 TX
#64 FL
#77 TX

Similarly, Ohio St.:
#5 OH
#6 TX
#8 WA
#11 VA
#36 OH
#44 GA
#47 PA
#51 OH
#53 OH
#69 MO

15 of the top 25 recruits are in states with SEC teams or Ohio. The state of Washington surprisingly has 3. But one is going to Ohio St. and the #1 recruit in the country is supposed to be leaning towards Ohio St. UW only has 1 of the 3 committed.

Alabama, Ohio St. and Clemson are raiding top players around the country. For example, Alabama has 3 of the top 11 in Texas and Ohio St. has the #1 ranked player in Texas.

If it was that easy to stockpile talent, develop it, and then get everyone to perform on game day then Bama wouldn't win anymore than anyone else.

The formula you're describing is not an unlocked mystery to the coaching ranks.

To some of your points in other threads...if the Saban system was nothing more than a matter of accumulating talent then every single one of his assistants would have duplicated it...including Sark.

It's not talent alone. Saban is probably the best coach in the history of college football. When he had his team ready for their bowl game against Michigan, I was sold. Not in their normal playoff game and still played like they were going for another NC.

Coaching matters! Look at Texas and Georgia. How in the heck can they not have more titles? I'll even throw in Michigan, they've recruited at a high level too. It's coaching, some do more with more, some do more with less and the three I mentioned above do less with more.

Of course having all those 5 star players help, but you still have to teach them your system and bring them back down to earth from their high school egos. Saban does it better than anyone and Dabo is close. We will see how Day adjusts, I'm very pleased with him so far.

Yes, it's both - you can't win without the talent, give Sabana UL-Monroe's talent and they would never sniff a title - but also poor coaching can squander talent as well.

Saban has shown that if you give him a losing team with talent, which by inference means the previous coach was wasting that talent, like at LSU in 2000 and Alabama in 2007, he needs one season of losing to re-tool things. Then it's off to the races.

Saban is undoubtedly the best coach of the past 50 years, and the most accomplished coach of all time.

To some of your points in other threads...if the Saban system was nothing more than a matter of accumulating talent then every single one of his assistants would have duplicated it...including Sark.

Wrong.

Recruiting is a skill. It is also a process. Alabama has the biggest staff of anyone in the country. Saban has the skill, the process and the numbers.

They also have the most and the most talented group of analysts who take apart their opponents every week as well as analyzing recruits.

And then recruiting is about publicity. My whole point is that Alabama and Ohio St. being in the picture every year gives them a huge advantage that cannot be replicated. And they can go into Texas and Michigan and Washington and compete advantageously against the local schools.

When you start out on 3rd base, its a lot easier to get home.

RE: CFP National Championship Game: #1 Alabama vs #3 Ohio State
Saban can produce great offenses while constantly flipping coordinators because he has the talent.

He is a great coach. He knows how to motivate and focus his team. But with turnover in the coaching ranks, talent allows you to overcome the learning curve.

No question. But then again, there's no law that bequeaths Saban a large amount of talent each year. He gets it because he is an ace recruiter, because Alabama is a blue blood with many titles, and because of the reputation he has built up over the years in terms of having great teams and putting lots of guys in the NFL.

It's no different than why Urban Meyer got tons of talent at Ohio State and before then Florida, why Spurrier and Bowden got a ton of talent in the 1990s, why Bear Bryant had it in the 1970s, and why Duke and Kentucky and North Carolina always have tons of talent in hoops, etc.

And beyond that, give Saban credit for innovating. E.g., I recall the 2017 kickoff classic game between #1 Alabama and #3 FSU, which was being touted as a possible national title game rematch at the end of the season. They showed the coaches boxes, and Jimbo Fisher and FSU - a big time coach of a big time program - had like three guys up in their box. Saban had like 9 in his. He has "analysts" for just about everything, and most of those guys are ex-coaches who worked at major programs.
