Monday Musings
Men's Basketball won a game over Akron. I don't know how to feel about this season. It is happening. But with so many postponements I do not know if the tournament will finish with any integrity. I have to believe that all other tournaments are canceled and probably go the way of the DODO bird.
Women's team won, they beat our "rival" according to the official emuwbb twitter. From the video they posted I could not tell who it was until later I saw the score was vs WMU.
I have no idea what baseball is going to do but if there was ever a year to play regional only and maybe experiment with wooden bats this would be the year. Alas, no one is more creative then us behind a computer screen, pounding on a keyboard..
If you don't want so many players to transfer then maybe the coaches need to do a better job of recruiting. The market will correct itself but it may take 5 years.

I'm going to disagree with your comment on recruiting.
What typically happens is that a P5 team, for example, will bring in 2 DTs a year. Some schools might be recruiting them say rated 85 - 89 (on the 247sports scale).
This means a lot of recruits are judged to be of similar abilities which means it is a crap shoot if the recruit with 87.08 beats out the one with 86.58. If a Maxx Crosby is playing as a soph who is going to beat him out?
We see good players stuck between other good, more experienced, players.
We see this a lot with QBs. Weren't there QBs of excellent potential siting on P5 benches who bloomed when they got an opportunity for PT and earned a very high slot in the NFL draft.
I think the QBs are getting it. If you are stuck behind a very good QB, maybe the grass is greener* elsewhere.
* There are a few exceptions like EMU, Boise State, etc. Have to put 'greener' in air quotes.

yeah its all about resource management. for a g5 school with limited resources - like EMU - losing players to transfer represents a higher loss of resource than ohio state or Florida.

I guess, but my point is that there is a trickle down from P5 to X. X can be G5 or FCS.
I think the biggest winner will be FCS schools because there is no sitout year moving down to FCS. The southern SWAC team are cleaning up transfers esp. from the SEC. Players are moving from say Auburn or Florida to a HBCU in AL, MS, FL, etc.

My point was is if you keep missing in recruiting as a coach you will be out of a job shortly. I think the massive transfer portal we see no will "even it self out" as player evaluation changes for a lot of teams.

My point is different:
If a team has 85 or maybe even 100 (2021) scholarship players, there will be a glut at many positions.
Simple math: 22 x 4 = 88. So that is four LTs, four RTs, four centers, maybe 6 QBs, etc.
Coaches may love 85 or 100 scholarship players but it is too bloated. What is a travel squad? Around 55? What is a NFL roster?
The lack of PT transfers are caused by players gridlocked behind two-deep players.
Who wants to be the 4th string QB? Or 4th string LT?

BTW, Aaron.
It is amazing to think of it, the 'company we keep' in football. It is a good list of schools. No Colorado School of Mines, California Tech (but they are great in class), etc.

RE: Monday Musings
Different subject:
Is the Covid problem with sports as simple as:
Baseball, football, soccer, etc. are outdoor sports. Basketball is indoors.
The only sport having serious problems with Covid is basketball and this is college and pro. (note hoops have small rosters and have much more problems than say college FB teams).
Pretty simple?
With that in mind given that MLB is outdoors and hopefully tens of millions of people will be vaccinated we can have a summer MLB season. (I'd start say May 1, maybe 100M will have their 2nd or at least 1st vax shots).
