Even in the last two season when Miami has been at or near the bottom of the league and BG at or near the top. Miami has won 3 of the 4 games, and the three wins were by 13,14, and 18 and the one loss by 2.

Gotta love the Whammy. Miami wins by 19!

I think Toledo is step above the rest of the league right now, but with that being said there just isn't a whole lot separating the top nine or 10 teams in this league. Every teams has some really good players, but has some major flaws.

If you asked me today who I think will win the league, the answer is Toledo, but one month from today that could be a very different answer.

I wouldn't say nine. I'd go 5-6 if you're thinking about what teams can win three games in three days (MAC Tournament).

Toledo
(Gap)
Akron
Bowling Green
Buffalo
Kent

Toledo clearly the best and most cohesive. The next four throw in a hat.

Akron has the best team defense and starting to find comp players to go with Jackson.

BG runs hot and cold but still has elite game-changer (Turner) most nights.

Buffalo is the most physical and has best inside presence of the five, but chemistry is off and 3-pt shooting is ???

Kent doesn't really have an inside game, yet team is long and athletic w/Pippen being a mismatch most nights ... when he's on. But defense very ????

After that is there any team you really like, for 3 nights, above those 5 options?

I agree with you on that group that could win it all, but I think you have a second group that if they make it to Cleveland can upset any of these teams: Ball State and Ohio definitely and then even EMU has beaten Akron and Miami just beating BG.. So I think there are teams that can win games in Cleveland, just not win the whole thing.

nothing official, but the rumor is that some leagues including the MAC will send their conference champ to the tourney this year. covid has made so much uncertain and with some teams missing a lot of games and possibly conference tournaments with a couple of the teams in covid protocol the only real constant is everyone will play a bunch of conference games. so, that's the most fair way to send a league rep to the dance. in terms of Toledo, the staff is stressing this likelihood and telling the guys to take every conference game as if it was a mac tourney do or die moment, which may be contributing to toledo having more consistency this year than in recent seasons.

Buffalo is going to spoil someone's season this year. They are losing some tough games at the very end. At some point they will flip that around. They clearly can hang with the top MAC teams.

Dae Dae Grant set a career high with 27 points vs BG Tuesday, then did it again vs EMU today with 28. What a great 5 day stretch for Miami.

Can you elaborate? Didn't get to see the game so I am curious on the deal with officials.

Officiating in the first half was some of the worst I’ve ever seen. Half took about 50 minutes due to the refs calling every touch foul (and even some where there wasn’t any contact). It went both ways. So many fouls were called at one point that the scorers couldn’t keep track and it appeared that one of the Toledo guards fouled out in the first half (changed to 3 fouls at half time).

Second half was better only because they couldn’t have been worse in the first half. The capper, though, was when pippen extended his elbow into a Toledo defender with less than 1 minute left and the defender went to the ground, pipped scored, and then the refs tacked on a technical for flopping, when it was the furthest thing from a flop. It was either a no call or a charge. Fortunately the technical FT was missed, so it did not impact the game, but it would have tied the game if it had been made.

Honorable mention for awful officiating occurred with less than 5 seconds left in a 2 point game. The clock started early on a missed free throw that went out of bounds off Toledo, and the refs went to the monitor to add time. They couldn’t make up their mind and then asked for a stop watch. Then they talked. And talked. And talked some more. I’m not sure how long the delay was but it was at least 7 minutes if not more. They ended up adding 1.1 seconds when I think the announcers and most observers thought .7 in additional time should have been added. I’m pretty sure Kent had time to install a few new inbounds plays during the stoppage, one of which they worked to perfection, but ultimately missed the layup off the inbounds that would have tied the game. Absolutely brilliant play and executed to perfection. Shot just didn’t drop.

Unfortunate when you have two of the best teams in the league and the refs ruin the game and the flow. Crap like this ultimately has to effect Mac teams when they get to the ncaa or play power 5 schools as none of those leagues see ticky tack officiating like that. Let the teams play. Nobody is there to see the stripes.

Agree completely.
I think the flop tech came about because he already had received a flop warning earlier and they were just ready to pull the trigger. I thought he just stumbled backwards. It was not a flop. Like you said, no harm ultimately so OK.

generally, i don't comment on officials much, and even in this case i'll add a few comments but focus more on the game which was a big one for both teams. ut had a big road win by 2 at kent earlier in the month and celebrated the moment. kent was primed for redemption. like other posters said there was too much effort by the refs at getting ahold of an intense game early. the first 5 minutes were fast and whistle free and toledo came out looking like a top 25 team and got a big early lead. kent showed their toughness as toledo went cold and battled back to take a 1 point lead. the rockets looked like they might start to pull back ahead but then it just became a parade of fouls for the rest of the half. toledo had 3 guards with 3 or 4 fouls each, but nobody knew cuz their had been so many fouls called in succession on toledo guards that both the announcers and the official scorer had it wrong at halftime and had to revise the stats.

this is not to whine as a rockets fan. the choppy play definitely works against toledo's preferred clean quick style of play and benefitted a bigger more physical kent squad (tangent- the reason UT matches up well w a similar ohio squad). that said, toledo committed a lot of fouls. ryan rollins had 5 iffy fouls but all were reasonable iffy calls. it was a learning experience for toledo and a big win to battle through it and win a close one with adversity. remember, toledo has a small roster. 1 covid opt-out, 1 scholarship player declared an academic rs by ncaa, 1 season ending injury, 1 serious-out for a while-injury, and your depth is two inexperienced 6-10 and 6-9 guys who aren't much help when your guards are in foul trouble. this was probably the best toledo win in years, to win a close one with some things not going your way over a real good team. kent is tough, i think they've won every game on their schedule other than an OT loss at virginia, a couple of 2 pt losses to toledo and a 4 pt loss at akron. they caught a few breaks in this one but toledo made more big plays down the stretch. in toledo's last loss to akron, the zips hit do or die 3 pointers in the final seconds of both regulation and OT.

the toledo-kent finish was a wild one. kent nearly turned 2 free throws down 3 with a couple seconds to go into 3 or 4 points with the missed 2nd free throw play. the rockets purposely fouled pippen setting up for a 3 and sent him to the line for the 1 n 1 . pippen drilled the first and kent called timeout. as everyone lined up for the 2nd free throw pippen quick shot it off the rim right. no kent players had a shot at the rebound but toledo's guys were off balance and saunders tripped over milner trying to catch his deflected rebound and knocked it out of bounds. in this case kent had the ball for a baseline out of bounds play down 2 but no one had the time right. the ut timekeeper had started the clock off the missed shot, not when it was first touched, and the refs took literally 7 or 8 minutes to make the clock 1.8 seconds, which by replay was a few tenths too much. slow and weird but gave kent a great opportunity to devise a winning 3 attempt or tying 2 pointer. when play finally resumed, kent ran a beautiful slow developing alley-oop to a guard who rimmed out the quick shot that would have sent it to OT. would have been more fun to watch these teams plays with less whistles though.

Weird evening. The Bulls were already in pregame warmups and the game was postponed 30 mins before tip off. CMU had a positive test, left the arena and flew straight back home.

Toledo cools off Miami to go 9-1 in the MAC. Rockets got 33 from D2 transfer JT Shumate who made all 11 of his shots including 5 threes. Miami played really well and it's easy to see how they are turning the corner and becoming an upper tier MAC team with good guard play and bigs who know their roles. They play a lot like NIU did last year with German. Rockets took control early and never trailed but Miami kept battling back and making it competitive. Big week for the upper tier as Toledo moves on to games with BG and Akron next.

Buffalo canceled again yesterday this time courtesy of Central Michigan 20 mins before tip off. I have no idea how the Bulls are going to get all these games in. They still need make up games with Akron, NIU and CMU.

The one big benefit Toledo has had this year is they haven’t had any games canceled either due to them or their opponent so unlike many other teams their routine hasn’t really been impacted and their momentum hasn’t stopped. They are very lucky.

Toledo actually had to deal with COVID during the pre-season, which shut down practices for awhile...it’s possible that the early brush and what was learned with it has helped the team stay safe & healthy (at least from COVID so far).

I agree with that. Buffalo was in the same boat around Christmas. I guess what I find more surprising is while every team in the MAC has had interruptions to their schedules based on other team's, Toledo has not once been impacted by that and that is truly remarkable.

Point well taken—especially since you can’t control it and are at the mercy of the other team’s situation...
