I would think that its going to be an internal promotion, or somebody from Fickell's massive mental rolodex of OSU/B10 contacts. I can think of few HCs in the nation who will have an easier time filling a DC vacancy with a really good candidate.

The guys we got coming back look really strong we could have a top 10 defense. If you are a DC strolling down the aisle looking for a job this product screams Value!

Of your list, I’d say we go with the last one.

The Tulsa guy is about to cash in like Freeman.

RE: New DC candidates?
I'll plop this here since it touches on DC candidates [starts around the 19 minute mark]. A lot of good info. Oregon was another program reaching out to MF about their DC position but couldn't make it public yet. Coach Fick was already developing a Plan B earlier this week if MF left for another program. Chad thinks the DC replacement will be named within one week. Link to BCJ podcast with Chad and Dave...

The Holy Grail BCJ Happy Hour Episode 1

Chad's Top Candidates Board:
Chris Ash - Texas DC
Paul Haynes - Minnesota DB
Mike Tressel - MSU DB
Brian Mason [Internal]
Perry Eliano [Internal]
Collin Hitschler [Internal]

Dave added speculative:
Harlon Barnett - MSU DB
Chris Partridge - Ole Miss Co-DC/DB
Tim Banks - Penn St Co-DC/DB
Rob Harley - Pitt LB/Recruiting Coordinator [Played LB Ohio St 2001-2005]

Yeah, Dave's list was more trying to connect dots with prior relationships to Fick. More spitballin' than anything.

Understandable...just felt like his defenses were VERY white-bread and didn't stand up to much against good competition when he was here before.

Haynes has a ton of connective tissue with Fickell, but that would be interesting logistically with DBs coaches already on staff. Harlon Barnett would be cool, even though I'm not convinced he'd be any different than either Banks or Haynes as far as logistics and coaching talent.

Honestly, if we're between those guys and our internal hires (because I don't think Ash will be available), I'd almost rather just have an internal hire come in for the sake of continuity.

Ash is making a couple hundred thousand more to not coach this year than Freeman did last season.

Please God no, not Haynes.

Ditto Tressel.

Brian Mason has an incredibly light resume and that is being polite. Hitschler, ditto. I get that they are CLF’s guys but man, they’d not make the cut if they submitted their resume for a DC job at a FCS school.

Guessing Eliano could be talking to Notre Dame soon about the opening they have in the secondary.

Tim Banks would interest me but I’d assume his salary level is already at or above what we will be paying.

Don’t know anything about Harley.

Look at the bios for Mason and Hitschler. I’m sure they are both brilliant but they would both be skipping several floors of the building.

Whomever the new hire is better be a big time recruiter.

RE: New DC candidates?
I may be in the minority but I don't want to worry too much about promoting from within for the sake of continuity if there is a better external candidate. Our trajectory for next season will most likely have us at the highest preseason AP ranking in our history and the schedule is favorable to win our conference, retain the NY6 slot, and to again have a "shot" at the CFP. I'd hate to have a guy learning on the job with everything that is at stake. This isn't Year 1 in the regime trying to keep the ship sinking further after Grubbs' 4-8 season. I would argue with the retained nucleus of players on dee, and if the defensive assistants don't change, along with Coach Fick, continuity wouldn't be an issue for an external candidate if he's experienced coaching defenses. I'm probably simplifying it some but it would seem to be a plug-n-play situation for the incoming coach. There's plenty of time to get familiar with the program and players before the 2021 season commences.

RE: New DC candidates?
I tend to agree with you. Unless you work with these guys daily, no one really knows the interaction and influence the existing guys have with players and recruits. I still believe Fickell was very involved with the defense particularly in Freeman's early years here. He's got a ton of experience and my belief is he has been a big, big influence on Freeman and molding him into the coach he is. I'd say the fact that Mason has been in charge of recruiting puts him at an advantage. Paul Haynes is actually a pretty well thought of guy. Whether at 51 he is still as active as in the past is anybody's guess, but he knows Ohio and the midwest well. I remember when Fickell hired Freeman a lot of folks thought that was a head scratcher as well given the Purdue references. Seemed to thrive under Fickell.

As to Ash you pay him $100,000 and he gets his TX money less $100,000 SOP.

Agreed. Mason is three years older and has been coaching longer than MF had been when he first came here. MF’s co-D title at Purdue was more ceremonial, the other guy was calling all the plays and schemes.

Whatever BDF decides I am good with.

RE: New DC candidates?
Look, I'm not happy that Freeman is moving on to the land of the over privileged and over rated, because it was working here and you don't always get that everywhere you go.

That said, lest we forget that Fickell has a tad bit of experience at coaching defense too. I don't think that this was a case of Fickell just riding along on Freeman's wits like BK clearly was with Quinn. I think he'll know what he wants and get it when he sees it.

It wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being someone not even named on here yet.

Same here. I do think BDF likes the DC to be in the same mold/mindset he is. I recalled reading this a number of years ago when Fickell named Freeman as DC. It was an interesting obituary on the Hazell era at Purdue. Ross Els was the co-d Hazell brought on for one year before he got canned. Cincinnati gets some prominent mention. Sounded like a cluster.

I did see Jim Leavett mentioned somewhere. Honestly, we could do a lot worse...He's DC at Florida Atlantic btw.
