Two comments that jumped out at me:

Mike Tressel isn't qualified to be the Head Coach at Cincinnati Moeller.

Mike Tressel isn't qualified to be the Head Coach at Cuyahoga Community College.

A lot of MSU fans view him about like we used to view Bob Diaco.

Hope Fickell had more of his hands in the defense than we thought, because if not, its going to be a rough one IMO. Tressel was below average at MSU by every metric, and wasn't a great recruiter either.

What metrics are you using? They've been very good defensively.

They dropped off tremendously when Narduzzi left. MSU has always had a decent defense (due in no small part to their competition being more run/defense focused as well), but they got worse when he too loved, and thats not even factoring in that he isn't a recruiter.

Narduzzi left in 2015. Msu had one of the best defenses in the country in 2018 when Tressel was coordinator. I think he wasn't happy when he left Cincy back in the mid 2000's but we're a long way from that now. I trust in Fickell. He's made the right calls, and he is and has been heavily involved in that defense regardless of what people think. Of this i am certain. Msu stats 2018

i broached Tressel as a potential candidate previously and it was mentioned that the opposite was true, that he was ecstatic to be leaving for a b10 gig with dantonio. if anything, that would be the thing that concerns me. That he rides the coattails of an already loaded D to another b10 DC gig.

As far as "in CLF we trust," i think losing Free is a big deal. Naturally, it's something that was always a possibility, so the glass half full take is that Tressel was always on the shortlist and that he's secured one of his top candidates, one who he trusts and is very familiar with, similar to Free. The glass half empty take is that Coach Fickell wasn't able to land his top candidates, and Mike Tressel is a "Break in case of emergency" candidate. Perhaps this is an oversimplification of the situation but there was a lack of smoke out there of any kind that indicated there was more to the hiring process from what i can tell.

Who were Fickell's top candidates? I haven't read of anyone.

Neither have i, hence the "lack of smoke" comment. Honestly, i didn't even know that Tressel had interviewed until he got the job.

RE: New DC candidates?
I don't know anything about Mike since he left with Dantonio but he has four years experience as a Co-DC and DC at the P5 level. He's also coached linebackers every year since 2004 [Cincinnati] with the exception of this past season when he coached safeties. We don't know who was interested in the position, who interviewed, what qualifications the candidates had, etc., but something tells me Tressel was on Fick's short list. This seems to be about fit and familiarity more than anything. I'll extend my hand to welcome him to Bearcat Nation and will give him a chance to show what he can do. What other choice is there at this point?

If I remember correctly (I'm getting old so don't quote me) Fickell conferred with Dontonio before accepting the head coaching position here at UC. It wouldn't surprise me to learn he did the same before hiring Tressel.

RE: New DC candidates?
My guess is that Fick told Chris Ash the job was his if he wanted it and then quietly talked to the people who were speculated to be candidates.

I was completely underwhelmed by the hiring of Fick and his choices of starting his staff with Freeman and Doug Phillips

Time has demonstrated that Fick is pretty good at this. Despite how low Tressel was on my personal wish list, all I can do is shrug my shoulders and believe in Fick

The between times from Narduzzi to Freeman was a long list of bad to mediocre DCs. Art Kaufman was probably the best of the lot. (Unless I'm completely forgetting about someone)

New DC candidates?
Next year is gearing up to be one of the best in school history. Fick had to find someone that could come in on day 1 and coach at a high level. If you go internal there is likely a huge learning curve over the span of the year that could screw our season. This hire seems much more about Fickell knowing exactly what he's gonna get.

Not to mention he's Jim's nephew. Here's his resume since he was a GA:

2001 Wartburg OC/QB
2002-03 Ohio State GA
2004-06 Cincinnati LB/ST
2007-14 Mich St LB/ST
2015-17 Mich St co-DC/LB
2018-19 Mich St DC/LB
2020 Mich St Safeties [Retained by Coach Tucker]

RE: New DC candidates?
In Fickell we trust. Tressell would be a great choice if it wasn't for the history, but I can let that go. Honestly I don't recall his actions, but was bummed Dantonio was leaving. It was a long time ago and things have changed. He did an excellent job with the MSU defense and is familiar with CLF and I think he steps in nicely.

I'm guessing he will say how great it is to be back to UC and mention how much better the facilities are since his previous stint. I'm guessing he won't apologize for what he said as to not bring up old stuff and honestly, our fan base has grown leaps and bounds since then, so most of the fans will have no clue, so why bring it up. I bet he raves about the new facilities and the trajectory of the program.

Welcome aboard and hope you can take us to the next level.

What did he say? I think it was Thomas Wolfe who said "You can't go home again".

As somebody whose been a season ticket holder and booster for almost 40 years i'm kind of confused by folks with this discussion of history with apologizing for what was said, et. al whether it's Dantonio or Tressel. The situation that i saw first hand was support was at best marginal at that time for the football program, attendance was still very iffy, and honestly the pay and prestige compared to going to any B10 program was a huge leap up. He and his staff were obviously the first to get the call along the way, but even amongst the boosters it was somewhat surprising that a school in the B10 came calling. There was no way, shape or form Uc could compete with Msu at that time on any front. That i know to be a fact. There were a lot of small calls to try and raise money for relatively small things let alone dream of a practice bubbles, renovated Nippert, locker and equipment upgrades, competitive salaries for assts. and staff. Those guys did a lot of pounding to get the talent level and play competitive, and Kelly was the right guy at the right time to follow up. Fans are never happy when coaches leave, but that's the nature of the game. When you have really strong support, you stand a lot of better chance retaining guys and at that time we didn't even begin to have that. I recall the night we upset Rutgers to ruin their perfect season on a chilly night in late November and there probably wasn't even a third of capacity in the stands. They're moving up was really not much different than what Freeman just did himself and others will do in the future. A lot more money, and a bigger stage. Folks aren't as critical now because it has happened quite a bit, and honestly it's likely the smart move. You don't turn that kind of money down. For those folks who weren't around back in the early to the middle part of the 2000's, those guys got it going. It wasn't a glamourous undertaking or circumstances. The result of those guys high tailing it out of town was the best thing that could happen to us at the time as Kelly was able to provide a more entertaining offensive show which put fans in the stands. That enabled the bigger financial support and the added resources we have today. People can have bad memories of guys leaving town for a bigger stage, but it was the best thing that ever happened to this program.

Dantonio comments on Tressel:

“Mike has grown immensely,” Mark Dantonio told MLive in 2019. “Mike is as good a coordinator as we’ve had – attention to detail – and we’ve had great ones, so it’s not to take away from anybody. But, the excellence that is existing right now on the defensive side of the ball is an indication of that.”
