RE: New DC candidates?
I find it interesting to see Msu fans thinking Steve Clinkscale may be DC at Msu. I didn't think from his days with TT he was coordinator material but i don't know his deal the past several years.

I have some friends who are longtime Dantonio and Msu backers, and they think highly of him. He's coached on some very good defenses, and he's a multiple position guy. Probably doesn't hurt he's coached here before. I think he'll fit in well with the existing coaches and players, and the style of play they've put in.

Big recruiter?

He's definitely a known name and has a good amount of experience getting guys to the next level. Msu recruiting definitely took a hit with all their issues school wide off the field not to mention the ill timed coaching change of last year. You have to trust Fickell in these choices. He is most directly impacted by everyone he brings on.

Hope Fickell had more of his hands in the defense than we thought, because if not, its going to be a rough one IMO. Tressel was below average at MSU by every metric, and wasn't a great recruiter either.

What metrics are you using? They've been very good defensively.

They dropped off tremendously when Narduzzi left. MSU has always had a decent defense (due in no small part to their competition being more run/defense focused as well), but they got worse when he too loved, and thats not even factoring in that he isn't a recruiter.

He’s not that well thought of by anyone I know up here in my neck of MSU land. Sparty fans were perplexed that he was kept on the new staff. Feeling was they just didn’t want to pay him to leave. I don’t recall him having more than just average recruiting chops, either.

Narduzzi left in 2015. Msu had one of the best defenses in the country in 2018 when Tressel was coordinator. I think he wasn't happy when he left Cincy back in the mid 2000's but we're a long way from that now. I trust in Fickell. He's made the right calls, and he is and has been heavily involved in that defense regardless of what people think. Of this i am certain. Msu stats 2018

Rushing defense: 1st (77.9 yards per game)

Scoring defense: 8th (17.2 points per game)

3rd-down conversions: 8th (30.2 pct.)

4th-down conversions: 8th (35.3 pct.)

Total defense: 10th (303.2 yards per game)

First downs allowed: tied-10th (213)

Pass efficiency defense: 20th (114.08)

Red-zone defense: tied-36th (80.0 pct.)

Passing yards allowed: 62nd (225.2 yards per game)

Stats over his 3 year period and before Tucker brought in his own D coordinator(they didn't do well when he took over last year)

Combining the stats over those three seasons (2017, 2018, & 2019) MSU's Defense Ranked:

#23 points allowed per game (#5 in Conference)

#11 in yards per game (#4 in Conference)

#8 in yards per play (#3 in Conference)

Granted this was 2 years ago, but still??????

Tressel took over as sole defensive coordinator in 2018 when Barnett left for the same position at Florida State. MSU ranked No. 1 in the nation in run defense that season at 77.9 yards allowed per game and among the top 10 in a number of other categories.

I can't speak to anyone that you know, but I would say generally no one in MSU land is particularly happy with that situation currently for many, many reasons, and it's not all related to the football program.

One thing you have to recall about the Msu football situation is Dantonio left late in the game last year. Somewhat similar to the UT deal now. By the time Tucker got the job, the amount of assistant and coordinator jobs not filled was small. Could have/would have is all speculation. The guys that were retained up there have had success in the past. Msu has been known as a defensive minded program as is with Fickell's philosophy. These are Fickell's calls, and he's done nothing but good things here. I give him the benefit of the doubt, particularly given the resources involved. He knows who is ready to be promoted and who is not. We're not in a position to go out and drop unlimited sums of money on assistants and coordinators.

RE: New DC candidates?
Here are some comments about Tressel when he was being kicked around as a possible HC at MSU back when then were going after CLF. Not exactly a glowing endorsement of the guy. The common theme is (as others have stated) is that he is not a good recruiter, and MSU defenses took a step back under him.

https://247sports.com/college/michigan-s...68/?page=1

Two comments that jumped out at me:

Mike Tressel isn't qualified to be the Head Coach at Cincinnati Moeller.

Mike Tressel isn't qualified to be the Head Coach at Cuyahoga Community College.

i broached Tressel as a potential candidate previously and it was mentioned that the opposite was true, that he was ecstatic to be leaving for a b10 gig with dantonio. if anything, that would be the thing that concerns me. That he rides the coattails of an already loaded D to another b10 DC gig.

As far as "in CLF we trust," i think losing Free is a big deal. Naturally, it's something that was always a possibility, so the glass half full take is that Tressel was always on the shortlist and that he's secured one of his top candidates, one who he trusts and is very familiar with, similar to Free. The glass half empty take is that Coach Fickell wasn't able to land his top candidates, and Mike Tressel is a "Break in case of emergency" candidate. Perhaps this is an oversimplification of the situation but there was a lack of smoke out there of any kind that indicated there was more to the hiring process from what i can tell.

But “it wasn’t a break in the case of emergency” situation. We are coming off a NY6 bowl, returning most of that talent, and have the best recruiting class in the G5 coming. There would have been plenty of capable guys who would have thrown their hat in the ring for the job.

I’ll trust CLF’s gut in this one.

Tressell seems fine as a Recruiter https://247sports.com/Coach/Mike-Tressel...eRecruits/

It seems like Scruggs is stepping into the roll as defensive recruiting star that Freeman once filled.

Look at the years those guys came in...last guy above a mod 3* that had him as a primary was in 2016.

I'll just hope Fickell had some serious influence on the defense already because I'm not particularly excited about having Mike Tressel here for many different reasons.

What you're failing to add in is that I'm 2018, they also saw the 8th fewest defensive possessions in FBS. Their offense was one of the most ball dominant TOP teams in the country that year (and throughout their tenure) which makes yardage and points against stats look WAAAAY better. Kind of like our own defense. MSU's defense was putrid in 2019, and was downright bad in big games throughout the last 3-4 years...

RE: New DC candidates?
You can argue this till your blue in the face. I know Fickell well enough to know he knows what he is doing, and he's more than earned the right to choose who works for him, and he has good reasons for it. He also knows much more than all of the folks on this board combined. If coaching results were the sole indicator, we would never have hired Marcus four years ago out of Purdue, and by any objective review of his entire body of work Tressel's results have been very good. You're going to find half of the Msu fan's who liked him, and don't like losing him because they are still loyal to Mark, and half of them who hate that he didn't control things and nip issues in the bud when he needed to and blame anyone who was there. At the end of the day, their defenses were generally pretty good.

Maybe i'm misreading your message but i feel like you're making my case for me. Who were the capable guys that interviewed for the position? Who were the guys that CLF rated Tressel over? Honestly, i don't recall Freeman being regarded as a slam dunk hire either so time will certainly tell, but Freeman was hired at the ground floor where the team had to be built in the CLF/Free mold. Given all that Cincy had to offer, especially on that side of the ball, this seems underwhelming...

MSU has always had a decent defense (due in no small part to their competition being more run/defense focused as well), but they got worse when he too loved, and thats not even factoring in that he isn't a recruiter.

Msu stats 2018

i broached Tressel as a potential candidate previously and it was mentioned that the opposite was true, that he was ecstatic to be leaving for a b10 gig with dantonio. if anything, that would be the thing that concerns me.

Or... CLF hired the guy who is best suited to continue the mold. I don't know who all was interviewed, but I am guessing Fickell has been looking into this hire long before it was announced MF was headed to South Bend. CLF would be the first guy Freeman would have consulted with.
