I don't especially want Tressel, but I think this is missing relevant facts. Narduzzi's last year at MSU was 2014. Tressel was the co-defensive coordinator for three seasons (2015-17) and the sole defensive coordinator for two seasons (2018-19), in addition to being the assistant head coach in 2019. They were FBS Top 10 in total defense and rushing defense in 2017 and 2018. In fact, Michigan State led the FBS in rushing defense in 2018 and was also ranked among the nation’s top 10 in scoring defense in 2018.

I'm with you here. I don't know that tressel is the best guy but I don't think it's clear he's a bad hire either and if Luke hired him I'd trust just judgment.

Tressel is not great in the headset and he had his finger prints all over some of the hijinx that went on around MSU.

One thing i didn't realize but came upon below is i guess Al Washington the Osu linebacker coach's contract expires 1/31. Obviously if money is the issue we'd have a tough time, but if he wanted to be a coordinator then maybe he is a possibility albeit remote.

He was a pretty blah DL coach when he was here. Sometimes there is a reason people bounce around the P5 circuit as a good recruiter who stays a position coach.

I don't know if there were any COVID adjustments, but Washington was scheduled to make $515K for 2020 and made $500K in 2019. Considering that Freeman made $600K and was probably in line for a good sized raise, it seems they could make the money work for all parties. The bigger issue might be more in terms of trust/planning. CLF understands that assistants that do well are often going to move on, but rumors are he expected at least a second year from Washington and wasn't thrilled that he left after one to another position coach job (at Michigan).

It sounds like there's a case that he's not just good, he's a great recruiter (and per Harbaugh that he's a cheater as a coach at OSU after having left Michigan for OSU, but I digress). It's just one random Internet guy's opinion but it's interesting to see him focus on both Charles Huff and Al Washington when discussing the best recruiters in college football (posted back in August):

My plan exactly.

I’d use the plays from Tecmo Bowl as my playbook. I was really good at shutting down Bo Jackson and the Nigerian Nightmare. Our run D will be stout.

They should use that as a training tool for Metz.

RE: New DC candidates?
Wasn't a name that excited me but I saw he was a candidate at IU before they hired the GA DBs coach so it's reasonable hire. Given Ficks relationship with his uncle it's probably a no-brainer

He's been a DC for really good defenses at Michigan State. Before that he was a really good position coach. He knows recruiting in this area. He has a name. He has a connection with Fickell. Seems like a good hire. I guess we'll see.

He's done it all coaching wise, and definitely knows both the area and Fickell's approach. I have some friends who are longtime Dantonio and Msu backers, and they think highly of him. He's coached on some very good defenses, and he's a multiple position guy. Probably doesn't hurt he's coached here before. I think he'll fit in well with the existing coaches and players, and the style of play they've put in.

I agree. My initial reaction was just based on name but taking a dive into his track record seems like a good fit. Of course Fick has earned 100% trust so good enough for him good enough for me.
