My guess is that they are considering moving Brian Mason to DC and Coombs to special teams.

I thought you'd like that. Not sure i'd put a lot of credibility to it. However, from my perspective Fickell we'll make the right call. He's shown a really good grasp to date. A few hiccups but a lot more home runs.

RE: New DC candidates?
I could see some interest if Fickell had coached with him before, but i believe he only was with the Bengals until he went to the Lions right? Unless Fickell got to know him while his dad was Cb coach at Osu. My guess is it's a very low probability. He is young though so it probably would be a plus for recruiting if Fick could "mold" him. LOL

RE: New DC candidates?
If they hire him for the DC spot it will make the Zach Taylor OC hire look like a home run.

Agreed...he has no experience coaching defense in any facet. Would be a VERY good ST hire though.

My son played basketball with Brayden. If he hasn’t changed, the best description of him is “The world’s biggest ego with the world’s weakest resume”.
If he is hired, I hope to God he has changed.

You gotta remember that coaching is a fraternity, and a job has to be found for each brother.

RE: New DC candidates?
I will be surprised [pleasantly] if we can land Ash for DC. It seems there is strong competition for his services...
Quote:With Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman out, and Steve Sarkisian in, there’s not much reason to think defensive coordinator Chris Ash plans, or will be asked, to stick around for 2021. According to 247Sports, Chris Ash is in talks with the Florida Gators, where he could potentially join head coach Dan Mullen in the same, or similar, position.
Ash to Florida
Quote:ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler says two names he’s watching are Chris Ash for defensive coordinator, who served in the same role for Meyer at Ohio State, and Texans defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver as the defensive line coach. Weaver served under Meyer as a graduate assistant at Florida.
Meyer may have some competition if he’s eventually hired as head coach of the Jaguars. Taylor Estes of Horns247, 247Sports’ Texas affiliate, reported Ash is being considered by Dan Mullen to join his staff at Florida.

Getting Ash is probably a pipe dream, but I don't think UC should settle for a position coach as the next DC. I don't prefer the OC being a former position coach, but I'd be ok with Gino, mainly because I think he may be the heir apparent should Fick leave.
They have been able to hire former DC/OC's from other P5 programs in recent history.
Art Kaufman -Texas Tech, North Carolina DC.
Eddie Gran -FSU OC
Freeman - Purdue DC
Denbrock - Notre Dame OC
I wouldn't be opposed to them grabbing a hot DC from another G5 school. For instance David Reeves from UAB? Why isn't he mentioned? He is a 2 time Broyles award nominee. His defenses have finished ranked 7th, 8th, and 9th in the country in total defense the past 3 years.

RE: New DC candidates?
We can't pay top dollar for a DC, but we are still an incredible opportunity for whoever gets that job. Look at how good our defense was this year, how much talent we're returning next year, and where we are landing in all the "way too early" top 25 polls. Whoever takes that DC job will see their stock rise working with BDF.

Gran was the RB coach at FSU
Freeman was a co-DC at Purdue; and the HC had just gotten fired
Denbrock had been the OC at ND but BK demoted him.
Plenty of people are interested in this job. Trust the process and CLF.

I will just say this about the DC. I do not want Tressel as the DC once Pat Narduzzi left MSU as the DC their Defense fell off. So if he can't do it at a Big 10 school I don't think he would be good here. Just my 2 cents.

Tressel is awful. Haynes wouldn’t be far behind that.
They’d go internally before those guys. Hopefully.

I don't especially want Tressel, but I think this is missing relevant facts. Narduzzi's last year at MSU was 2014. Tressel was the co-defensive coordinator for three seasons (2015-17) and the sole defensive coordinator for two seasons (2018-19), in addition to being the assistant head coach in 2019. They were FBS Top 10 in total defense and rushing defense in 2017 and 2018. In fact, Michigan State led the FBS in rushing defense in 2018 and was also ranked among the nation’s top 10 in scoring defense in 2018.

I'm with you here. I don't know that tressel is the best guy but I don't think it's clear he's a bad hire either and if Luke hired him I'd trust just judgment.
