Two comments that jumped out at me:

Mike Tressel isn't qualified to be the Head Coach at Cincinnati Moeller.

Mike Tressel isn't qualified to be the Head Coach at Cuyahoga Community College.

FWIW, I don't put a lot of stock in fans who think Moeller is the best example of a dominant (or even relevant) HS FB program in the Midwest.

Why not? They've won 2 state titles in the past 8 years. And every single year they have multiple guys sign with FBS programs.

Out of curiosity which St. X player went to Clemson? I'm aware of the 5 star linemen from Fairfield that went to Clemson and that's it from Cincy.

Wouldn't want the QB that went to Penn State. IMO he was the sole reason they haven't gotten to the elite level was because he was average and at times below average QB. I like his brother as a WR though. Justin Hilliard as a 5 star didn't produce at Ohio State until this year. I know St. X just sent another 5 star Offensive Linemen up to Ohio State as well.

We lost out on Moeller 4 star DT to Penn State as well. Moeller was dominant from '12-'16/17ish if IIRC and had plenty of talent going all across the Big Ten.

GCL grad and 100% agree 03-lmfao

Although it's not as bad as it used to be IMO.

We won state twice while I was at Moeller and sent a kid to the Bengals. I still don't really care about the weird GCL pride this city has.

You don't realize how weirdly into high school sports Cincinnati is until you move away. Not saying it's a bad thing, but it's definitely not the norm outside of maybe Texas.

Other pockets of Ohio are pretty bad too... Steubenville, Massillon, Canton, a lot of the small towns up on northwest Ohio like St. Mary’s, St. Henry, Delphos and Minster (no offense Bruce).

I used to work with these two guys (now retired-close to 70 now) who would spend their days talking about GCL battles throughout the years- going way back!

The one was a little worse than the other; he attended every home football and basketball game (including JV) of his HS alma matter. His kids were long grown up and he had no relatives playing. He wore his school colors in the office on Friday before a football game.

My wife has family living in Massillon on her mother’s side. There is a bar there aptly named the Tiger Bar which is a shrine to kids that played football at Massillon. When a kid is born at Massillon General Hospital they put them in a onesie with the school logo on it.

I prefer to consider it pretty good. I can never understand people who have no appreciation for where they were schooled, be it high school or college. Especially since the high school is also where they lived (and perhaps still do).

Yeah...community pride is not a bad thing IMO either. I just hate the constant GCL dick measuring.

By the way, I say this all the time, but MAC football is the best football and it ain't even close.

I guess I worded what I was trying to say incorrectly--- its not "bad", its just different. In the smaller communities high school support remains long-term due to the communities being tighter knit and having fewer (and sometimes no other) local sports entertainment options. I mean it just does not make sense for a 65 year old man who lives in Fairfield or Mason to wear his high school letter jacket around town and go to football games every Friday night when there are so many other options. Its a different tune when you that same guy living in a place like Steubenville when there really is nothing else to do but go fishing or go out to a good mom-and-pop Italian restaurant and a bar (I was born in that neck of the woods and my extended family lives all over that valley so I know how life goes there).

The bolded reminds me of a story a friend of mine shares all the time. He was not originally not from Cincinnati--- he went to Notre Dame undergrad and Case Western Law School. He applied at a firm in Cincinnati because his wife was from here and the managing partner who first interviewed him was a St. X grad who proudly still wore his high school class ring (it had a big X on it). The managing partner looked at his C/V and said "Well, obviously you went to good universities but what high school did you attend?". When he told him he went to a small public school outside Columbus the partner basically lost interest.

The guy has been an extremely accomplished civil defense trial lawyer in Columbus for the past 35 years.

Kind of wish we could land an Elder guy. Do you remember Bradley Glatthaar?

Senior running back Bradley Glatthaar rushed for 252 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 6 Cincinnati Elder (14-1) to its second straight big-school title when it defeated 12th-ranked Lakewood St. Edward, 31-7. Glatthaar’s rushing total set a Division I state finals record. His scoring runs covering 14, 47 and 41 yards and 191 of his yards came in the second half, when the Panthers outscored the Eagles 24-0. Elder had 405 total yards and held St. Edward to 170 (80 rushing, 90 passing). Elder became the first school to win back-to-back big-school titles since Canton McKinley in 1997 and ‘98 and joined McKinley, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller and Cleveland St. Ignatius as the only Division I schools to win consecutive state titles. It was the third state runner-up finish for the Eagles.

I know this is off topic but when is the official hiring of Tressel supposed to happen? Anybody hearing anything definite about the RB coach?

UC is notoriously slow about formal announcements. For example, Notre Dame announced Freeman in a day. UC always goes through official HR and other administrative processes before they formally announce a hire. Last year it took them a month to announce Dan Enos.
