Pera is probably the loudest and most rambunctious coach in the conference. It's honestly more surprising when he doesn't get under the skin of an opposing head coach.

Or more refs. But Pera is getting the most out of this team so you have to give him credit for that.
Nice win. I doubt many people on this board expected a 3-1 conference start. If you recall, we were 0-3 vs UTEP last year in conference play and 1-8 to start out the conference season (but 6-3 over the last 9 regular season conference games).

I think the players like Pera’s intensity on the sidelines. Shows he has their backs and the team isn’t playing just to roll over for the other teams.

Congrats Owls! Hard fought win in a hostile (refs and a few fans?) arena. I’ll take a conference road win any way it comes. Always a good learning experience to see they can win on the road.

RE: MBB at UTEP
Interesting quote by UTEP coach Jason Terry in the El Paso Times about last night's game. While he's probably correct about the second part, it's not something you usually hear from a head coach.
"There was a time or two we were pressing a little bit, trying to play fast, because they can't really guard, they aren't a good defensive team at all."
I wonder just a bit if this is a carryover of sorts from the UTEP football game, and what happened to cancel that game at the last moment?

Nope, think he also says at some point that the Rice bench and staff were taunting the fans after the game (or at least that's what Twitter is telling me). I'm an expert on what Terry is doing and do it all the time myself. When you're pissed off that you lost and the opponent might have done something that you didn't like, so you throw a few insults around to make yourself feel better and/or out of frustration.
The cold fact is that, in the end, Terry is going to have to reconcile with the fact that his recruiting abilities are not translating into on-court success. Just look at the roster this year.
Boum averaged 11 as a freshman on a good San Francisco team. Williams averaged 14 and 6 on Fresno State as a sophomore. Bieniemy averaged 32 minutes for Oklahoma last year. Kennedy played 10+ minutes as a freshman at Xavier. Verhoeven was one of the best freshman shotblockers in the country at Duquesne. Agnew averaged 13 ppg at North Alabama last year. And Sjolund averaged nearly 10 minutes per game as a freshman at Georgia Tech.
And in the years prior, he turned Efe Odigie from a guy averaging a double-double into a guy who doesn't see 10 minutes. He ran Gilyard, Hawkins, and Lathon from the program by recruiting transfers.
Bottom line is I don't care if we annoy the hell out of people as long as we're winning or staying competitive. As long as we don't start fights or start acting like sore losers, I'm happy to see some energy and cockiness in the program.

I'm just happy to see 9-3 right now. Hopefully Pera can improve his record for the 4th year in a row.

Yes. ODU will be a good test. It would be nice to see Pera win the Friday game.

RE: MBB at UTEP
Last night was the first time I've had the chance to watch an entire game this season. We've got a good big man, a deep bench, and some players who can really hit 3's. This is a good team -- just wish we could keep them all on campus for once...

From what was shown at the end of the ESPN+ video stream, the Owls were acknowledging the boos from the UTEP crowd by waving goodbye and encouraging more boos. Calling what was shown taunting is a bit of a stretch, IMO. Maybe something more was said or done that wasn’t shown, but I agree that frustration in losing primarily drove the UTEP coach’s actions and later comments.

They allow fans in the game? I thought only parents can attend. How many were there? I am surprised they have so many transfers from accomplished programs who want to play basketball in crappy El Paso.

How long has it been since you visited El Paso? The downtown area has been revived, with the AAA baseball stadium and light rail triggering redevelopment of historic buildings and reconstruction of public spaces including San Jacinto Plaza. It is walkable and a destination connected to UTEP by the light rail. The Army has spent billions at Fort Bliss, Texas Tech built a medical school, and TxDOT expanded the interstates. El Paso is now attracting people seeking low cost of living compared to the western states.

Yeah, from my one visit, El Paso ain't half bad. Is it Houston, no.. But not bad for a LCOL small city.

Sounds like Van Gundy is talking up Fiedler...

@RiceBasketball’s 6-10 sophomore @maxfiedler123 is one of most improved players in the country. How do I know? An ex-NBA head coach who now works for @ESPNNBA & lives yards from Rice campus told me. Max averaging 12, 9 & 4, shooting 69% for 9-3 Owls.

Ditto. A big improvement for sure if we can split with ODU. (01-10-2021 01:53 PM)ESE84 Wrote: (01-10-2021 12:42 PM)owl95 Wrote: I'm just happy to see 9-3 right now. Hopefully Pera can improve his record for the 4th year in a row.
