RE: Freeman to the Irish
Peach Bowl performance on dee was probably the final selling point for Marcus Freeman. He was already a hot commodity before that game but the Cats played really well on the national stage and it cemented his status as the #1 coordinator to go after. A bit early to say this, but potentially at Notre Dame he can achieve the same level/impact as Clemson's Brent Venables. Kelly found another pot 'o gold for his program. As for us, who are viable DC replacements?

I don’t. Sorry, but I hate Notre Dame.

I am with you. If Fick leaves I do not want him back.

Guessing it’s going to be an in house battlefield promotion.

So we have a guy who has coached for two years (Scruggs), a guy who was terrible as a DC (Eliano), or another guy who has two years as a coach (Hitschler).

Or we go with Brian Mason. And we have to replace a LB coach now too.

Yeah I don’t see how Fick doesn’t bring someone in. I don’t see any current staff being promoted up to DC. Maybe one gets a co-dc with whoever he brings in.

As to someday rehiring MF my answer is no. I had employees leave and then want to return, the answer was always NO, HELL NO!

Fick pretty much brought him off the dung pile called Purdue. Remember even Tubby's team scored big on them at West Lafayette.

I know many feel different. But "You cannot go home again".

Wouldn’t be a particularly inspiring hire but don’t be surprised if that’s the direction we go.

Could this be a prelude to Fick going to ND after next year? I get the feeling that Kelly is growing tired of coaching.

Crossed my mind. We reading too much into the move. Don’t even!!! I think BK just realized after their last game he can’t win a title at ND unless they turn recruiting up another notch.

If it did happen, I’d almost guarantee Freeman would be our next HC in that scenario.

I want Chris Ash...3 years as DC for Bielema at Wisc and Ark...Co-DC with LF at O$U for the national championship season with Meyer...Got $11M+ to be the head coach at Rutgers...just spent last year at UT as the DC...has earned 15-20 million in those jobs above. After the removal at Rutgers, maybe he wants a couple stable years coaching a stacked UC defense with people he knows (he left Rutgers and Tom Herman scooped him up for a season) before jumping back into a head coaching job. He is only 47 years old as well...I saw Michigan has him on their short list...I hope LF has already been in contact.

RE: Freeman to the Irish
The fact that we are the hot G5 program right now, I can't believe we wouldn't attract interest from some other program coaches to at least interview. Fick knows defense and knows what he wants out of a coordinator and he did pretty damn good with his first choice. To me it comes down to an assistant from a P5 program or a DC from the non-power. Don't know anyone specific but Marshall, Army, Air Force and Ohio to name a few were solid defenses this year. With Holliday out in Huntington, I wonder what is happening to that staff?

Oh dont be such an insufferable twat. Its college football and coaches come and go Freeman has been nothing but class while here and if fates align and he becomes our head coach in the future I am sure you will sing a different tune.

He is taking the next step in his career. We knew this would come.good teams lose good coaches.

Any concern on players that Freeman recruiting hitting the transfer portal now? I know Fick is defensive minded coach as well and Bearcats are a hot team right now so not overly concerned, but this does happen.

I have no inside information, but Chris Ash is available and being paid by texas. Fick was co-DC with Ash under Urban, but I have no idea what their relationship was like.

I'm not worried. Fick will make a good hire and will.game plan with the new DC, as he did with coach Freeman. I don't hate Freeman for his move. I hate that it is ND but I don't hate Freeman. I wish him luck and would hire him as HC. I hope we destroy his defense in the fall though. We have survived HC changes, we can survive this. It means we are doing well.

Nah. Guys on the roster are committed to their teammates. Now we’ll probably lose some ‘22 guys.
