We haven't had a ton of P5 transfers over the years and while most contribute but most don't seem to dominate.

Personally, I don't get overly excited about transfers regardless of what program they are coming from until I see them play for App. To the best of my knowledge, App has never been big on accepting a lot of transfers. Even when App was FCS, they landed some 3 and 4 star players from "big time" programs and while several contributed, I don't recall any "dominating." To me, the best thing about transfers is adding a player with some college program experience and improving depth. I try not to elevate expectations just because a player comes from an A5 program.

Now if a proven player transfers in then obviously my expectations will naturally rise but there are not to many instances of an impact type player transferring. For instance, if I were a GS fan, my expectations would've probably risen when they got Eligwe (LB) from FSU several years ago as he had legit playing experience.

we a player transfers from a P5 school I like to read their message board if they are like who then well I wont get too amped. with Bankston Iowa state fans were pissed a starter left and questioned why he picked UL which is a good sign to me .

Agreed. Sometimes too much gets put into how many stars a player had in high school 2 or 3 years prior to their transfer. Doesn't mean much, especially if they got like 0 playtime at their first uni

Immediately eligible?

Yes. On campus now with Graham and Johnson as well as a handful of early enrollee graduated HS seniors.

The transfer portal could be a game changer for the G5. Talent wasted at the P5 level problem solved. Simply having the opportunity to find a place that you can contribute to immediately rather than wading through a bottle neck of talent. Many reasons for making a change. The G5 loses a standout from time to time but more good athletes are waiting in long lines who now have a path to success. Training at the P5 level is arguably better making the G5 less attractive to the P5. Should be better for the G5 in the long run to level the playing field.

It seems the talent is trickling down more than it is moving up. The portal has been good to the G5 so far.

RE: 2021 Transfers from P5 to SBC
The portal is going to be more important than ever before this year and next year. Covid wrecked havoc on high school prospect evaluations for coaching staffs. the normal guess work of prospects have grown to the point of complete guesses. few accurate numbers for heights, weights, speed times. no getting a accurate sense of a kids personality/demeanor. The portal will function as a safety blanket for the guess work that high school recruiting will be in the short term. needless to say, there will be a lot more misses on prospects in this class and next years class.

He isn't "Apps QB" as there will be a real competition for the starting job, but he probably has a leg up against the true fresh and covid-fresh guys on squad.

Exactly. 3rd school transfers have a low chance of working out. Maybe he's your guy, but there's usually a reason why a guy couldn't cut it at two previous stops.

App State, Troy, Texas State, Georgia Southern, and USA have all picked up highly-rated QB transfers from the P5... add in that Louisiana still has Levi Lewis, Coastal still has Grayson McCall, Ark State still has Layne Hatcher, and Georgia State still has Quad Brown...

The Sun Belt may have some unbelievable QB play next season.

Here is who has transferred so far (per 247Sports):

App State
QB - Chase Brice (via Clemson): 4-star

Arkansas State
WR - Tevailance Hunt (via TCU): 4-star

Coastal Carolina
DB - Tre Douglas (via Vanderbilt): 4-star

Georgia Southern
QB - James Graham (via Georgia Tech): 4-star
LB - Andrew Johnson (via Oregon): 3-star

Louisiana

WR - Glenn Beal (via Texas A&M): 3-star
DL - Latrell Bankston (via Iowa State): 3-star
DL - Clinton Anokwuru (via Kansas): 3-star
DL - Tyrone Lewis (via Kansas State): 3-star

South Alabama
QB - Jake Bentley (via Utah/South Carolina): 4-star
DL - Ethan Rinke (via Tennessee): 3-star

Texas State
QB - Ty Evans (via NC State): 3-star
OL - Charles Fletcher (via NC State): 2-star
DL - Nick McCann (via Texas Tech): 3-star
LB - DeMarrquese Hayes (via Kansas State): 3-star
DB - Dontye Carriere-Williams (via Vanderbilt): 3-star

Troy

QB - Taylor Powell (via Missouri): 3-star
RB - La'Damian Webb (via Florida State): 3-star
DL - Jamarcus Chatman (via Florida State): 4-star
DB - Taiyon Palmer (via NC State): 4-star

Georgia State
NONE

ULM
NONE

Amazing what happens when the conference puts a quality product on the field. Given talent coming back and addition of these transfers, all SBC teams will put even better products on the field in 2021. This includes upgrades to the coaching staff at a few member schools also. This is our chance to make sustainable upward separation from several other conferences.

ULM, you're on the clock. Bowden has the connections needed to make transfers happen and the NCAA is blessing it this year. Whatcha got? You need a few names on this list.

Rhett Rodriguez, QB from Arizona

The staff will obviously look at Tabscott and Goodman, but the reality is Brice is being brought in as a bridge so those two incoming freshman can redshirt and learn the offense. The fact Brice has two years of eligibility is important. Griffin is gone and by all reports Shuler just doesn't have the tools to be a FBS level QB.

That's generally true but it's pretty easy to see how he "didn't work out" at Clemson since he was playing behind Trevor Lawrence. He did pretty well as the backup and is credited with "saving their championship season" when he played while Lawrence was out for concussion protocol. His performance was pretty mediocre at Duke but he had a pretty bad supporting cast around him and it's not like he wasn't seeing the field. I'm causiously optimistic and at the very least, he gives us some experience in the competition for QB1.

Exactly. 3rd school transfers have a low chance of working out. Maybe he's your guy, but there's usually a reason why a guy couldn't cut it at two previous stops.

Well, he was behind Trevor Lawrence and then Clemson signed another 5 star QB recruit. At Duke he transferred in during the Spring and COVID hit. Duke practiced even less than other programs because, well, they are Duke. It seems the school didn't believe any sports should be played based on messages coming out so I can't imagine their practices were anywhere close to normal. Add in the fact that Cutcliff runs one of the more difficult college offensive schemes for a QB and it spells trouble for a QB coming in on short notice. It's even difficult to run for upperclassmen who grew up in the system.

Whether he will succeed at App or not depends on his work ethic, obviously. But what he did at Clemson, and was pretty good when he got his chances, is far more similar to App than Duke. I'd expect his time at Duke during a pandemic year to likely be a blip rather than the rule.

Can't fault him for transferring out of Clemson either. You're not going to beat out Lawrence and we all saw what the back-up looked like in 2 games.
