Because it's a contract between FBS conferences/teams and when it was signed the WAC was FBS. The current contract is a simple extension.

That is not accurate. The CFP is a different contract than the old BCS contract.

I deleted the rest because it was built on that misunderstanding.

The reason that the WAC may be able to give out FBS invites is that the NCAA Division I manual says:

Quote:20.4.2.1.1 Eligibility for Reclassification. Before a Football Championship Subdivision institution may apply for reclassification to the Football Bowl Subdivision, the institution must receive a bona fide invitation for membership
from a Football Bowl Subdivision conference or a conference that previously met the definition of a Football Bowl Subdivision conference (see Bylaw 20.02.6). (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

BAM. Everything you need to know. The WAC can go FBS any time they want to (and I hope they do).

"Before a Football Championship Subdivision institution may apply for reclassification to the Football Bowl Subdivision, the institution must receive a bona fide invitation for membership from a Football Bowl Subdivision conference OR A CONFERENCE THAT PREVIOUSLY MET THE DEFINITION of a Football Bowl Subdivision conference"

On the other hand, the WAC Rule for conference continuity is a reminder of how quickly the NCAA rules can change when The Powers That Be want them changed.

I don't know how interested the existing FBS conferences are in bringing back the WAC. So that rule could disappear in 2021 as quickly as it appeared in 2011.

Why would the existing FBS conferences care one way or another? If anything the P5 conferences, especially the Pac12, would probably welcome it to give them more regional FBS OOC opportunities than the MWC.

Which is why you see them announcing intent already. Its critical for them to get the other teams pretty quickly, get everyone signed on and submit their ntent now, locking it in before everyone else pays enough attention and get together to change it.

Still this is mostly shooting for the stars and being fine with landing on the moon. Even if there is some sort of probation, the rules become more strict, or they change them, the WAC football teams will use the whole issue to gain some concessions from the NCAA/CFP.

Especially since these teams are likely to not be successful initially and a few long term, they will also be looking for buy games which will pull the price down.

The P5 might not care, but the G5 would.

1. Associating with this group would make the G5 look bad.
2. It would drive buy game prices down.
3. It could increase recruiting competition
4. It would divide up the CFP money pie up even more and so the G5 schools would get less.

But to go back to an earlier argument I made....does the G5 really want to deal with the ramifications of being seen as hypocrites claiming the P5 is excluding them while they exclude the WAC?

I don't know if there are any legal ramifications from changing the rules to exclude a grand-fathered FBS conference, but two of the "Texas 5" attornies who were part of the team of lawyers taking on the Tobacco companies for the State of Texas in the early 2000's are in the Beaumont area. Several buildings and facilities including Lamar's football stadium, the administrative building, and the student recreation center are named after two of them. I don't know if any of them would be interested, but there is the potential. 04-cheers

Legal, for one thing. Hard to sue someone for something you are doing yourself and win.

Political ramifications. While these schools don't have massive fanbases they do have them and all it takes is a couple complaints to congressmen and/or Senators for there to be problems. There could be state level political ramifications as well, especially in Texas.

Maybe so. Ramifications or not, I was just answering the question you asked regarding why would any FBS conferences care if the WAC joined in.

The MWC, which killed off the WAC, would be most impacted. A few members had to cut sports and they all took a bath financially. Their piece of the pie would be cut even further.

I wonder if a couple of the Texas FCSers are looking towards the MWC....

I would assume that every one of the WAC schools could say that they cannot be any worse than the Texas State Bobcats, so I would leave No. 1 out. I don’t see it having any effect on buy games, it might mean a few less buy games. The recruiting is already competitive, so I don’t see that as an issue.

The issue is the CFP revenue and how to get an equal share of the revenue that other G5 conferences are getting. The G5 conferences are currently getting around $85 million in CFP revenue. Would P5 conferences be willing to give up around $17 million in revenue for the addition of the WAC? I doubt it, but you never know what is going to happen. Also, if these schools are going to move up, they better be prepared to spend a lot of money on the upgrading of their football facilities.

3. It could increase recruiting competition
4. It would divide up the CFP money pie up even more and so the G5 schools would get less.

I know what you are trying to say, but let's ask

Coastal Carolina has a 20k stadium, does that make the G5 look bad?
Texas State has nice facilities and a healthy budget, but we cant win football games or draw fans. Does that make G5 look bad?
A team like Texas or Alabama doesn't care if a g5 looks bad, it strengthens the argument that they are better. Other G5 schools don't care when a team looks bad, they actually seem to enjoy it. Look at the respective boards, SBC and CUSA fans gloat when the other conferences teams get beat.

I agree that adding more teams will likely drive down the money game payouts because there are 8-10 more mouths to feed, but would the g5 be up in arms if each of their leagues expanded by 2 (adding the JMU, Montana and NDSUs of the world)? It creates the same number of FBS teams.

I agree that recruiting is more challenging but that's just part of it. People said the same thing when Texas State and UTSA moved up and they told us that the Bobcats shouldn't be allowed.

I know that Texas State moved up to get away from these schools like SFA is trying to do right now. SBC and CUSA doesnt seem to want them and won't offer an invite. So someone else wants them and wants to give them a shot.

RE: WAC Plans To Announce FCS League
The more FBS teams that exist the harder it is on the lower twenty percent of FBS. This seems obvious IMO.

RE: WAC Plans To Announce FCS League
Can the WAC invite UTA? Good place to try football again. Then if Texas State ever gets that move to CUSA west the Belt can get out of Texas. Not that I’m trying to get rid of Tx St for any other reason that tightening the Belt’s geography and seeing them with other Texas schools.

UTA will stay in the Belt as long as the Belt will have them. It's more likely the Belt would add someone like Missouri State, Eastern Kentucky, or even one of the soon-to-be WAC schools to go to 12 in football if UTA goes FBS.

The ArkLaTex dynamic makes the Sun Belt work, even without football in Arlington.

True enough but A State is closer to Tenn or Missouri than Texas or even Louisiana. I just feel bad Texas State is stuck on an island in central Texas.

Things are always going to be hard for the lower twenty percent because for the most part they either aren't capable of or lack the institutional will to support a FBS program. But because Louisiana-Monroe has pretty much always sucked at the FBS level didn't prevent schools like App State, Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina, and Liberty from having success when they moved up.

WAC AS FBS Conference In 5 Years?

Another article that they could make a play for FBS in 5 years instead of 10 which be in time for the next CFP contract.

The NCAA will simply remove this language below, by suggestion from G5 but anonymously, if it looks like it could happen

or a conference that previously met the definition of a Football Bowl Subdivision conference

presto problem solved
