No more than I get the distinct feeling that the Big 10 East and Big 10 West will inevitably split, or the SEC East and SEC West will inevitably split, or CUSA East and CUSA West will inevitably split.
A 14-member full-sports conference with a footprint covering one-quarter of the country isn’t doomed to tear itself apart just because it’s in the southwest quadrant instead of the northeast or southeast quadrant. Moreover the new WAC has an inherent appeal for members inasmuch as it joins two of the country’s best recruiting regions (Texas and SoCal) and spans the country’s three fastest-growing states (#1 Arizona, #2 Utah and #3 Texas). I don’t buy the idea that the WAC will be ready to move back up to FBS status for at least another 10 years, but it has the ingredients to become a top-three FCS conference and solid mid-major in basketball fairly soon.

RE: WAC Plans To Announce FCS League
There are no continuity requirements. If a conference splits, one of the sides has to petition the NCAA to become a new core conference to get autobids. The NCAA defines a core conference as a multisport conference that has 7 members and has played as a multisport conference for 8 years. This is why you won't see a conference split unless it can absorb another conferences shell.

Fact: If you are a thousand miles east of the Rockies and you're in the WAC, either nobody else wants anything to do with you, or you're plotting your next move.
Western Texas may be some kind of limbo land exception, but I'm not certain.
Not sure why an NMSU fan thinks Texas is out of place. NMSU is about 20 miles from Texas. NMSU is closer to most of the incoming WAC members than it is to California Baptist, and a helluva lot closer to those Texas schools than it is to Seattle.
Because it is. While your statement about them being close to Texas is true, they’re only close to El Paso. Which is 8-10 hours (car ride) away from Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin. El Paso is the only real city in the Mountain time zone in Texas. You can drive from Las Cruces to San Diego faster than you could to Houston.
NMSU is barely closer to the Texas schools than it is to Cal Baptist. They would also lose their closest “rival” in GCU if they went with the Texas schools.
Finally, somebody looked at a map! I think the reason Las Cruces doesn't feel that close to much of Texas is the same reason Texans barely consider El Paso to be part of Texas.

Sources: The WAC is close to finalizing a plan to add 3 schools as associate members for football only in 2021 – Eastern Kentucky, Central Arkansas and Jacksonville. (They are headed to Atlantic Sun for 2022 and beyond, as that league is slated to begin football.)

This plan could be solidified as soon as tomorrow. The WAC needs 6 members to qualify for an AQ bid for the fall of 2021 NCAA football postseason. They have six current members, but two are transitional from DII – Tarleton and Dixie State – which don’t count yet toward AQ status.

We have been talking about this on the WAC MB all week and general feeling based on comments from the AD re: their scheduling for '21 is Dixie State will not be part of this in '21

I think he is wrong on that one. Any new football schools added to ASUN will be affiliated to the Big South until both conferences get more football schools.
Northern Colorado to the Summit with football in WAC and affiliates with UC-Davis and Cal. Poly going to WAC as affiliates which could put the pressure on Sacramento State and Northern Arizona to the WAC.

Not to go down the David State rabbit hole... but this is all about a one-year fix for these school(s) that were bolted from their conference and school(s) that have huge gaps in their scheduling in the coming year without conference schedules and in the case of the ASUN/Big South schools - a league that is not in a position to just add them with a few months' notice.
Still curious to see what the Southland does; likely will be a double round-robin or pretty close to it.

Round Robin is what the Lone Star did after the ACU and UIW peaced out for FCS.

Northern Colorado to the Summit with football in the WAC: Possible
Northern Arizona to the WAC: Possible but unlikely
UCD and Cal Poly to the WAC as affiliates: Very unlikely
Sacramento State to the WAC: Very unlikely

RE: WAC Plans To Announce FCS League
I guess 2021 WAC football will be:
Tarleton State (x)
Abeline Christian *
Sam Houston State *
Stephen F Austin *
Lamar *
Central Arkansas * %
Jacksonville State %
Eastern Kentucky %
* former SLC members
% switch football to ASUN in 2022
(x) ineligible for post season play
Note: Southern Utah wont leave the Big Sky until July 1st 2022. Dixie State needs a year to unbind their schedule commitments.
In 2022 the WAC will be
Dixie State (x)
Southern Utah
Tarleton State (x)
Abeline Christian
Sam Houston State
Stephen F Austin
Lamar
(x) ineligible for post season play
Dixie State become eligible in the 2023 season
Tarleton State become eligible in the 2024 season
2022 ASUN football will be
Central Arkansas
Eastern Kentucky
Jacksonville State
North Alabama
Kennesaw State
(6th school unnamed)
Note: North Alabama will be eligible for post season play with the 2022 season, no waiver required.
The 6th school has almost certainly been identified. My WAG is a public school in Tennessee likely in the OVC. The Tennessee schools and trustee boards held firm over not playing; I suspect this is part of the reason for the later invitation.
Amazing development. But sensible, as both leagues will have their AQ status when they each start up.

Here's another possibility for their sixth football team: Stetson, who is already an ASUN member, with an FCS football team playing in the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League. Maybe, Stetson will add football scholarships and their football team will join their (full) conference mates. Or maybe not. Stetson is a small private school and adding football scholarships plus a few women's sports might be too much of a stretch.

Stetson and the ASUN in their FAQ on this move have already said they are not adding scholarship football. That answer is up there, as is the one that no schools are adding football (cough, FGCU) because the ASUN already went around and asked and got a bunch of noes. The WAC did the same and had similar results, although RGV said they'd look into it down the road "maybe" but nothing imminent. Adding scholarship football is a big deal, needs lots of money, plus new facilities, and a major shift in sports lineup (drop some men's sports, add some women's for Title IX). Stetson and FGCU are dry wells (so too likely is RGV for the WAC).
I suspect the ASUN will target APSU.

UTRGV already paid Mack Brown to be part of the study to bring football to the school. The studied have been done. They are sitting on the finding, and the rumor is that it is a go for an FBS down the road.
UTRGV and North Florida could be able to pull this off, but others with no football can't. They both do have ready stadiums to use right away. UTRGV have the soccor stadium and North Florida could rent the pro-football stadium since they are in Jacksonville.
