Tracking Men's Basketball Ratings/Rankings 2020-2021
Hoping for the most improved award for the Men's basketball team.

Will paste updates through the year. (Sagarin and Real rpi = sources) I'll throw in Women's RPI for the heck of it as well since they are young and should improve.

1-7-2020
Men's Sagarin - #262
Men's RPI - #239
Women's RPI - #71 (obviously point differential is not considered in RPI)

My gut is RPI is way too high for Women, and a bit too high for the Men as well.

For the record the Men's Sags for the prior 4 seasons (aka the Rowe era)

2016-2017 - #228
2017-2018 - #230
2018-2019 - #265
2019-2020 - #303 03-puke

That was a hell of a trend leading into a new arena. 03-lmfao

I'd love to see us playing in the 150-160 range by year end getting our overall rating under 200. I'm confident coach By's first year Sag will be lower than any of Rowe's years.

By Comparison By's last 6 Sagarin Ratings
2014-2015 - #141
2015-2016 - #225
2016-2017 - #197
2017-2018 - #152
2018-2019 - #117
2019-2020 - #121

Now you win in hoops in a big way and you move up in football- that’s the plan and our facilities are the envy of many schools - now we just have to take care of things on the field and we will be competing at the highest level in both flagship sports.

I don't think our issue is the competitiveness of our two flagship sports. I don't think Men's basketball has had anything to do with us not moving up. Our new arena certainly does not hurt us, but I doubt the Convo held us back from offers. Our choice and aggressiveness is the only thing that has held us back.

Is Real RPI the metric used by the WBB selection committee? I can never remember the official rankings they state they use.

11 out of 10? That's not a great start to the HCMB 2.0 era 03-lmfao

Fixed

That was obviously last year's CAA rating. 03-lmfao

DNR Spring 2015

Both James Madison athletic director Jeff Bourne and Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner Tom Yeager say the CAA is “close” to being back to where it once was as a men’s basketball league. Both Bourne and Yeager expressed confidence in the direction the league is heading

Yeager concedes that he'd like more fans at the event. But he says attendance should swell after the tournament grows roots in Baltimore.

RE: Tracking Men's Basketball Ratings/Rankings 2020-2021
Finally some more games played

Last week

1/18/2021

Men's Sagarins = #262 & 11th in CAA
Men's Real RPI = #238 & 7th in CAA

Current

1/18/2021

Men's Sagarins = #239 & 11th in CAA
Men's Real RPI = #187 & 5th in CAA
Women's Real RPI = #77 & 4th in the CAA

I continue to favor Sagarin/Computer much more than RPI, but RPI is the only rating I know for the Women.

Does not matter what Bourne says ot thinks as he will be a resident of NC soon.

What matters? Is Alger going to get a third term if yes, conference discussion game over. If no, is it important to the BOV to hire a brand president or do they mail it in and collect their checks.

Massey as of 1/18
Men's - #223 & 5th in the CAA
Women's - #121 & 2nd in the CAA

Hopefully our results improve in conference...right now our best win is at #139 UVA. @UD is our only remaining chance to beat a top 100 team (though they're #92 and could drop out before we play them). I would pretty much guarantee a CAAT championship would be needed to make the NCAAs this year. Getting absolutely smoked by Maryland and WVU doesn't look good, but getting smoked by Elon is a dealbreaker.

As for the men, I agree we haven't earned breaking into the top 200 yet (not losing to Morgan St or beating VCU would have changed that, unfortunately). Getting at least one win at NE would I think would bump us up to earning a top 200 spot. Getting into and staying in the top 200 this season would be a really solid start by Coach By. Top 150 would be tough work from our current position, but would be a remarkable climb and would be a great setup for next season.

RE: Tracking Men's Basketball Ratings/Rankings 2020-2021
As I expected, continuing to move up as the season goes on -

1/7/2021 (first post)

Men's Sagarins = #262
Men's Real RPI = #239

1/18/2021 (last week)

Men's Sagarins = #239 & 9th in CAA
Men's Real RPI = #187 & 5th in CAA

1/25/2021

Men's Sagarins = #219 & 7th in CAA
Men's Real RPI = #142 & 5th in CAA

Of note, the best Sagarin finish under Lou was #228 & worst was #303.

Coaching makes a HUGE difference.

Towson should be a solid/even/toss up matchup for this team.

RE: Tracking Men's Basketball Ratings/Rankings 2020-2021
I’ve never really liked/trusted Sagarins as a metric. Personally just feel they place too much weight on past year results and are slow to adjust.

Real RPI metric may not be perfect either, but it seems closer to me.

RPI started at over 200 this year and now feels like it reflects about where this team is. 150ish and top 3 in CAA is justified after the results with NE and Towson. The team is clearly light years better than where they started, and RPI reflects that.

I think the RPI takes longer to become accurate. Plus the RPI does not care if you lose to VCU by 2 or 50. You get the same rating for the game

Sagarin Current Top 2
1) Gonzaga
2) Baylor

RPI Current Top 2
1) Houston
2) Michigan
9) Baylor (throw in)

Without the early losses to Morgan St (#256) & Norfolk St (#263) would be in the Sag top 150s.

I don't think there has EVER been a JMU basketball team that improved this much and with the same players (not due to injuries, or transfers) from the beginning of the season to the end of January.

In this strange Covid year we still have two more home regular season games with with Drexel. Three home regular season conference games with the same conference mate - won't likely see that again.
