Will all 3 count as conference games, or will one of them be a rare "OOC against a conference mate" game? I think there were a few games like that in the ACC but that could have just been because of how an early season tournament shook out.

Even though the two games at the end of February with Drexel still show on JMUs schedule when the announcement of Sunday’s game came out last week from the CAA they announced that in JMU would host Drexel for one game on either 2/27 or 2/28. So it will just be two games vs Drexel not 3.

I assumed they would all count as conference games. Good question....

I do know the CAA will determine seeding by win %, which is important because it's extremely probable that not all the teams will play their full slate of conference games.

Yes - that makes sense. I recall they said they would play one or the other TBD.

Out of curiousity...2013 when we won the CAA, does anyone know where to find (or recall) what our RPI rating was through Jan/Feb into March? Were in the 150’s? Top 100? Just on my mind...

Final Rankings

JMU 2013

RPI 162
Sagarin 170

JMU 2011

RPI 90
Sagarin 95

I'd guess the ending of December 2010 was the highest ratings we had since Lefty left, or perhaps even Lou #1. Brady's 2010-2011 team was rolling December of 2010 when we were getting votes in the top 25. Denzel.....

Couldn't find weekly rankings, but did find the final Sagarin ratings for that season. We finished at 170th. The CAA was rated 17th best conference that year (or 16th worst, depending n how you look at it).

And my medium to short time goal is to move JMU to a top 100 program.

Basically that would be where ODU was at 10-15 years a go, but not quite to the level of where VCU or GMU were at in that same time frame.

RE: Tracking Men's Basketball Ratings/Rankings 2020-2021
That 2010-2011 season was the last time I attended a JMU basketball game in person, as I moved away from the DC area. It was the Mason game in January. Coincidentally, sat right behind Dukester and little Dukester, just 1 row from the court. Big crowd (5700) and a great atmosphere. We were 15-4 going in and GMU was 14-5. Sadly, Cam Long couldn't miss and we lost by 2 points. Those were my recollections.

My girlfriend at the time had some different recollections- funny the things girls remember. These were her quotes:
*Humpty Hitchens adjusts his junk a lot
*Denzel Bowles is real lazy - he barely made it to half court on some possessions. (He did have a good game statistically though)
*Devon Moore has a tiny head
*Andrey Semenov seems like a badass
*Goins was a big fatty

Dukes - 137 in RPI
Duke - 155 in RPI

Wonder when was the last time that happened?

Great question. My guess would be 1981, when JMU made the NCAA Tournament and Coach K was in his first year at Duke; starting a rebuild that would take two years to complete. Sorting through historical RPI data now.

EDIT:

1982 Final RPI:
JMU - 24
Duke - 85

1983 Final RPI:
JMU - 46
Duke - 77

After that Duke turns into... well, Duke. Though we had some good teams in the late 80s and early 90s, we were probably never going to be ranked higher than Duke again.

Yeah - that kinda shows how wacky the RPI is.

Before last nights games the Sags for Duke were #37, and Dukes #194.

JMU's Sag is effected materially by bad losses to Morgan St, Norfolk St, and ECU.

JMU would be about a 15 point underdog to Duke on a neutral court.

That said you are correct, it's not happened in a LONG time.

ECU beat #5 Houston, so that might help it look a little better, but yeah. Not great. Morgan State was especially bad. Coming off an extended layoff because of Covid and it showed mightily. But it seems like the JMU team of 2021 is different than the JMU team of Nov/Dec 2020.

Exactly why it is not used and has not been used in about a decade. In a covid season with so few games played it is exacerbated. Anytime early in a season you will see some very strange RPI numbers. Despite being late in the season, with so few games, it is the same effect. I would actually be surprised if there were not some other random point early in some season along the way that JMU was ahead of Duke briefly.

I said about a month or two ago, my interest in the two program kinda flipped as well for the first time in a long time. I like the women's team/players, and coach. The lack of tournament success, and OOC success has put a damper on my excitement in the program.

That said "relatively speaking" the Women's team is still currently better than the men's team, but the trend of the men's team is exciting. And the reality is most people (all things considered equal), including myself, are going to be more excited about Men's basketball than Women's basketball. That's just a reality.

Has Women's basketball tanked? Nope, but we are not near to the top 50 program we were prior to Sean taking over. There's always injuries in women's basketball. There is always in youth. Excuses don't begin to matter after awhile. You can say the women's team was positioned to win CAA tournament last year, but we thought the same thing the last few years. OOC has been ugly the last few years. Conference play under Sean has been fine/solid. OOC and CAA tournament play continues to do worse than expected, and quite frankly getting blown out too many times.

The real-time RPI has us at 104. Nice jump from last week.
