RE: Possible huge Ohio St CFP title game news
wonder how many guys have Covid and wonder how much of this is to help Fields get healthy for the title game....
Of course- this would also mean another week for Waddle to get healthy for Alabama.

Maybe, or maybe Justin Fields needs a few more days to get up to speed. Either way the game would be better with Fields than without him, or Fields in a diminished capacity.
But there needs to be some governance over this. What happens if during the extra week Alabama gets COVID cases? Are you going to grant grace to OSU but make Alabama play to meet a deadline? Are you going to cancel the game and declare them co champions?
Verification transparency is needed now.

Great minds think alike.
Of course makes the defensive assignment that much tougher...

Not only that, but I’m sure Texas wants their head coach in Austin. Pushing the game out means Alabama could lose their OC.

The FCS playing in the Spring has impacted the CFP.
Typically, the NCAA bylaws state that the college football season must end by the second Monday in January. However, the FCS spring season and playoffs will extend the season to May 15, thus also extends the FBS season through that date since the change was passed by the entire Division 1 Council.

RE: Possible huge Ohio St CFP title game news
I do not think Ohio State is playing any funny business with the virus situation (Saban's daughter was dumb, and probably has provided OSU with the same motivation boost that Dabo did ranking them 11th), and in theory, I would prefer to postpone the game rather than have one team crippled by the virus. We want to see them at as close to full power as possible.
The problem is, postponing doesn't necessarily solve the problem. The virus isn't going anywhere, so what if they postpone until Monday the 18th, and Ohio State still has an issue? Or what if Alabama doesn't have a problem on the 11th but suddenly does on the 18th? Do you say "well we postponed once so can't do it again" and you force Alabama to play in a weakened state when you let Ohio State have more time to recover? That wouldn't be fair.
The game can't be postponed forever, so IMO you just have to play it on the 11th, come what may.

Agreed. Games are always better when both teams are at full strength but when does that ever really happen, virus or not? If they postpone then there's precedence to continue to do so. There has already been quite a bit of money spent for next Monday so I don't think it'll be cancelled.

That isn't going to actually affect the CFP, but it does affect one FBS team: New Mexico State, who didn't play a fall football season but will play a few games this spring versus FCS and D-II teams.
https://www.ktsm.com/sports/college-spor...-schedule/
Quote:NMSU scheduled New Mexico Highlands (NMHU), a Division II program out of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, the Aggies’ third game on the spring slate. The matchup is scheduled for Feb. 27, 2021 at Aggie Memorial Stadium. It will be the 14th meeting between the two programs and the first since 1999.
Quote:In addition to the Cowboys, NMSU is scheduled to host Tarleton State on Feb. 20 and Dixie State on March 6. It would appear the Aggies are the only FBS program committed to playing some type of season this spring.
As KTSM reported in August, NMSU head coach Doug Martin and director of athletics Mario Moccia wanted to see the Aggies play four games in a “glorified spring ball” season. NMSU is more than halfway to their mark, but will not exceed four games in order to keep their student-athletes fresh and ready to go for the fall of 2021.

You know, I wonder how many FCS conferences/schools will actually play in the spring. They made those decisions to play spring ball when it looked like they would have FBS company, but now they don't. So do they really push ahead with a spring schedule when Fall football is just 8 months away?
Also, if anything, the virus situation that prompted the push-back is worse now than it was in July/August and despite vaccines likely still will be in late February/early March when these things kick off. The whole idea behind pushing to the spring was a bet that we'd be done with the virus by then, and clearly we aren't.
So it will not surprise me if some teams and even leagues do not actually follow through with this.

I could see them canceling the FCS games but I wonder if few would want to play with the only thing there playing against is the NFL playoffs, NBA and men's basketball. With the NFL playoffs at night could FCS teams hope to pickup ESPN airtime? While it's true theirs a lot more FCS players per team then basketball but if college basketball can still travel and play why not football?

It is possible that some FCS might see this spring as a chance to get more exposure than they normally would get going up against FBS and the NFL.
But if I were running an FCS program, I would just skip. The logistics of playing football games in to May, with a Fall season just three months later, seems silly.

The expense is going to be too much. And the virus shows no sign of slowing down. The vaccines won't be with the general population until April.

I think April is a very optimistic view for the vaccines(s). I'm in two high risk categories (over 75 and diabetic). I'm hoping I can be vaccinated by the end of April, but I'm not betting on it.

They're vaccinating half a million Americans per day. At that rate, that's 5% of Americans every month. The number per day is steadily increasing, and it will skyrocket as other versions of the vaccine are approved.
About 9% of Americans don't need vaccinations because they've either already been vaccinated (5.48 million as of January 6th) or have already tested positive for COVID (21.8 million).

Most Americans who have received their first dose still need to get a second. Those who haven't gotten their first dose need to get two.
People who have tested positive in the past for COVID are still advised to get vaccinated due to the possibility of being reinfected.
Maybe the pace will pick up. All I'm saying is I'll believe it when I see it.

My parents are high risk and are due in the next week or so. I'm hearing one of my college students is eligible in the next few weeks.
