I actually don’t hate this conference, I would maybe modify the north some but not a bad overall look if we’re gonna do a best of the rest.

That conference has nothing to with each other culturally and geographically and I think the teams are highly debatable.

Counter-proposal: UAB, Marshall, WKU, CCU, GaSt, GSU, FAU, AppSt, UConn, Army, Buffalo, UMass, Toledo, WMU, NIU, Ball St (all the MAC schools and Independents are football-only)

And then Bellarmine and Belmont for olympic sports to get to 10 there. That would be my favorite lineup. Everybody helps everybody else out in different ways, and very contiguous.

I like it.

Could use FAU or FIU

One problem is, the MAC schools have largely been together forever and won't split. Most of the others you named bounce between conferences on a regular basis at every opportunity. Don't see the North happening here.

NORTHERN DIVISION
Northern Illinois-------------->UConn*
Western Michigan---------->UMass*
Central Michigan------------>Army*
Ohio--------------‐‐‐----‐‐--------->Liberty
Marshall
Western Kentucky
Middle Tennessee

SOUTHERN DIVISION
Appalachian State
Coastal Carolina
Georgia State
UAB
Southern Miss
Louisiana
Arkansas State

*Football Only

I would also consider Charlotte instead of Coastal. Lots of solid markets there with Birmingham and Atlanta, then the northeast teams. Liberty adds a solid football and basketball well placed to go with the other northern team all sports. Basketball would be solid with Louisiana, UAB, Georgia St, Marshall, W. Kentucky, and Middle Tenn all having some success. Eleven basketball teams makes a full round robin at 20 games.

Not a fan. Not sure how it’s the “best” of the rest. Troy has a much richer history than some of the schools on this list.

The go for big markets idea is what ruined the CUSA currently. Go with established programs because that means more. Troy/stAte/UL getting left behind when the CUSA raided the Belt hurt CUSA because their markets have done anything for them, besides lose money.

Conferences have internal dynamics to them, particularly SBC & MAC where the divisional setup they have produces a certain result.

From this perspective I don't know how you can shuffle the MAC, CUSA, SBC in a way that its a greater sum. What is going to happen to these programs when you are going to put them together in the same division?

There is no king maker in any of these divisions. No regular Top 25 team. When the MWC split from the WAC they had BYU on board which was a regular, certifiable Top 20 level program.

The only one in that list to build a conference around might be App St for football, the others seem sporadic IMO.

C-USA is fine, they over expanded but they are fine. UTEP is an outlier and always will be, they screwed the pooch never trying or pushing to get on the Mountain West train.

I’ll never get this belief. The MWC poses the exact same problems for UTEP that the old WAC did: it isolates them from both large collections of alumni and from fertile recruiting grounds. There’s a reason why they left that dynamic behind that hasn’t changed.

Fair enough. They just have a horrible location for their school. Just looking at C-USA's footprint, it's hilariously bad.

Obviously the people who should care about that if it were truly a problem don’t, so why should anyone else?

WAC moving forward is tighter, IMO.

I think in the future SBC takes 2 CUSA schools in an expansion. It probably depends on if UTA and Little Rock get invites to move elsewhere and accept. I could see the Belt wanting that to focus on making sure that each school has football. Maybe they stay and we go to a 12/14 model. It’d help CUSA, to an extent. They’ll get larger shares from TV revenue.

RE: "Best of the Rest Conference" (MAC/USA/SUN merger)
See no reason for the MAC or the SBC teams to do anything! The MAC has a 10 Million media contract till 2027. The Sunbelt currently winning with the performance pool from CFP and only splitting the pie 10 ways. The MAC's twelve teams are not splitting the pie too many ways. The problem is CUSA with sh-tty media contract, poor performance and splitting the pie too many ways. CUSA see no way of fixing it themselves unless they split and keep trying to drag in the SBC and MAC teams for there own benefit and fantasies.
