MyBB Gregg Marshall - Is he on the short list in our AD's pocket
Any news on Gregg Marshall? It seems that Wichita St has cut ties with him.

Penny seemingly liked GM enough to endorse ALo signing with Wichita State.

Would it be good for all parties (UofM, Penny, GM, players) to transition to GM as BBall HC? Would GM consider coaching at Memphis? Would Penny see this as a win? I think it would be a win for Penny to transition the program out of Tubby's hands and into Gregg Marshall's.

If I am the AD, I have already spoken with GM to gauge his interest level. the details of his investigation haven't come out to my knowledge, but what I do know is that he can flat out coach at this level!

Full disclosure: I think Penny brings something special to the team and am happy to let him continue as our HC. He brings valued knowledge, connections and work ethic. He will continue to grow as a high major Div1 BBall HC.

With a 5 year extension just signed a few weeks ago there is no short list right now...

All college coaches have long contracts. It's needed for recruiting purposes. That being said, I adhere to your notion that Penny is our bball coach. And I'm happy about that. The point is that there is a top 10 current NCAA bball coach that is available.

At least I can't name 10 better. Better:
Roy Williams
Bill Self
K
Jim Boeheim
Pitino
Mark Few
Tom Izzo
Jay Wright

There are a slew of coaches that are similarly great so maybe I'm over-selling GM, but I don't think so. Similarly solid NCAA coaches:
Huggins
Scott Drew
Dana Altman
Bruce Pearl
Chris Mack
Tom Crean
Kelvin Sampson
Mic Cronin
Chris Beard

Lol.. the details of the investigation were bad enough that the Charles Koch and the entire Wichita St board declined to save the man that built that entire program.

Dude is basically a walking lawsuit if you hired him this soon after

But maybe Marshall could be a consultant here while contemplating his future and getting counseling.

I assume you are talking as an assistant coach

But I doubt his ego would allow that.

There's not a single coach on that list I would rank Penny above.
And I love Penny.

OK, couple of clarifying points...

Penny is the man.
Penny will be fine.
Memphis will be fine.

Ok, Saban makes a habit out of hiring as a consultant a recent head coach that got fired. Builds cred, loyalty, improves the program... maybe this is an ok idea.

Marshall is going to be out of work for a while until the stink wears off from the allegations. In about 2-3 years, some program desperate for rebirth will hire him. It won't be Memphis.

And I'd welcome him as a consultant, but his ego - which is evidently huge, even for college coaches- won't allow that.

Penny hasn’t shown he’s anything other than a great recruiter. He even does less with talent than Pastner, and that’s saying something. Sadly, he isn’t doing a good job as a coach.

Alabama needs an OC. He can go to the Saban rehab program.

Marshall had his shot to come here. He tried to hold out for a big job too long.

The first sentence is not quite fair. Our D has been exceptional under Penny.
The second sentence is ridiculous.
The third sentence is just wrong (recruiting, excitement, relevance, money).

Yes, the defense has been good. But we aren’t winning enough games, and rarely ever beat a good team.

We’ve had incredible recruiting classes but Pastner made the tourney years 2-5. Do you see this team making the tourney? I don’t. Looks like a continuation of the Tubby years. Mid-pack AAC team with no hope of NCAA bid.

Who is excited about Memphis basketball now? I don’t think you’d see a full FedEx Forum now. Also, tell me about relevance? How in anyway are we relevant? I will agree with recruiting, he’s done a great job. But he can’t do anything with the team once he gets them here.

Absolutely. If he can achieve that much at Wichita State, he’d kill it here. I’d take Hugh Freeze too...
