RE: Houston's Caleb Mills stepping away temporarily
Are we taking up for Sampson... lol One of the media announcers in the last game I watched (SMU vs Houston) talked about Mills leaving and equated it to covid.....The other quickly tried to clarify and erase that covid reason by repeating part of his conversation with Sampson. This is what the announcer reported that Sampson said: "Hell I dealt with the whole team having covid. I had to apologize to Marcus for playing him too much when he came back from covid."

I have no idea why Mills is leaving.

Sampson alluded to it in an interview. Although he didn't specifically say Caleb had COVID, he certainly implied it. But that was from earlier in the season, and not the latest issue.

It is bizarre that some of OUR FANS think they need to defend Sampson to the death, just to make a point about Penny.

Penny says things from the heart and many times without filter. I knew that when he did this the first time as a HC, and all the media talked about how refreshing it was, that it wouldn't be long until the media and fans started holding that against him.

Sampson is a great coach, no doubt at this point. But he's not exactly a role model in all other things.

And if we're going to pick apart Penny about things he said, then here is what Sampson said about Caleb at the start of this season...

"He has no ego,” Sampson said. “When I say no ego, if you were to look at his Twitter page the only thing he ever retweets is when something good happens to his teammates. And that’s a reflection of that kid’s character and what a great teammate he is. Caleb is an unbelievable teammate. He’s a team-first guy.”

Does this sound like a player the coach would need to discipline, or want to run off, just a few weeks later?

It is not a good look either way...

Your best player is transferring...And it looks like there was a rift between the player and the staff.

We don't know what happened or if the discipline was appropriate but it is clear this is a negative for Houston.

You think Sampson forced Mills out? I don't believe that for a second.

I think the quote.

Quote:"Caleb, our coaching staff and his family have agreed that he needs time to refresh and prepare for the remainder of the season," Houston coach Kelvin Sampson said in a statement released by the school.

Leads one to believe that it wasn't all Mills choice. Doesn't sound like a voluntary 'refresh' period.

Do I think Sampson didn't want Mills...Absolutely not.

Do I think Mills was being disciplined...Yes.

That quote doesn't have one word in it that says Sampson disciplined him. They're a top 10 team. Mills is their best player.

Sounds to me like Mills told Sampson he was leaving, and that's a stock statement the coach would issue before it actually happens.

For now, the general word out of Houston, as told to some at Memphis, is that he got homesick, and simply wanted to be closer to family.

Let's wait and see where he transfers. If it's in NC or close, that would seem to uphold that possibility. If it's So Cal or UConn, then not so much.

But using that quote to justify your opinion doesn't hold up.

As usual, it looks like something you made up that bears no resemblance whatsoever to what has been said and written.

Correct that statement is a canned statement to hide any details...

But to get homesick mid season after being at the school for 2 years (enrolled in the spring) seems a little strange.

We both are speculating...probably will never know the real reason unless someone directly involved states it...

No, you're speculating. I'm not. Some in our BB program say they were told Mills left to be closer to home. That came from Houston.

I'm not saying that's 100% accurate as to the future, but that's what Houston is putting out to other AAC schools.

I think he is from North Carolina so I guess Memphis is closer but not close enough if he is trying to get closer to home.

Why ? MEMPHIS is a lot closer to home---He could go 1 mile east from Houston and be closer to NC

Me either.

Interesting to see where he ends up. If he wants to be closer to home, per 247sports that's Asheville, NC. Same source: he was recruited by Charlotte, Clemson, College of Charleston, Wofford, Wake Forrest, Tenness....I threw up.

Me threether.

"I developed something at Houston that a lot of people didn't know I had -- that's my toughness," Mills said. "I credit that to Coach Sampson and his staff, but now I feel like I can bring that same mentality to my next school. They helped me to find my mid-range game and that's another thing I can go to every night now."

Another Prima Donna who got pissed he was coming off the bench. How do you leave a team that's in the top ten? Fkn idiot. There I said it! I'm not buying the homesick bull****. I left my hometown (Chicago) that was 600 miles from Memphis for 5 years plus, and they were some of the best years of my life. I left my girlfriend of three years, my parents, my sisters, my buddies, etc. etc. I would do it all over again. Homesick??? GTFOH!

His toughness includes quitting? Lol.......These pampered brats have no idea what toughness is. They all think life is a reality show, facebook, and twitter.

Would you rather be a bench player on a top 10 team or the go to guy on a top 25 team?
