It’s a lot easier to recruit to the BE than the AAC

RE: Thank Mick for this mess
I think that's a good comp because it touches a little on how teams (especially college teams) are still more nuanced than their best players. What I mean by that is that it's unfathomable to think we would get better from 2009-10 after losing Lance and Vaughn, but then you have guys like Larry Davis, Rashad Bishop, Young SK, etc. who step up and figure it out together. Maybe this team does that at some point this year. If not, I think the clock should start ticking next year (I really doubt they give him the axe this year. Just not worth worrying about).

Easier to win too. No excuse to not be top 3 every year and in the tournament.

I'm confused by the effort comments. They have shot it poorly. They aren't very good with their positioning on defense and they foul too much, but they've fought hard to the end of games. I haven't really noticed a lack of effort.

RE: Thank Mick for this mess
The thing about the Cronin teams was that they were always good on defense which kept them in games even if they couldn't shoot worth a dang.

These guys aren't good on defense AND they can't shoot worth a dang. That's not really a good combination for a basketball team.

Now Brannen had NKU at the top of their league and played a great UK team to a single digit game in the NCAA, so I would think he knows something about coaching basketball. I think our coach and team just need to collectively pull their heads out of their a$$es.

I record the radio feed of all Bearcat games. It’s rare that I go back and listen except in cases where I miss the game. I listened to yesterday’s game late last night. Some of Terry Nelson’s in game comments included:

Vogt looks like he is trying out for the Sopranos. He’s wearing concrete shoes.

There are five guys standing around watching the ball and Tulsa keeps scoring on the same backdoor play.

There is no effort. The product on the floor is bad.

Etc.

I’ll take Terry’s word for it.

I'm not near ready to give up on Brannen, but we shouldn't be losing a bunch of games in this league no matter what the situation. It's already starting to feel a bit Uconn-ish but without the out of nowhere national championship to send us off into insignificance.

I agree with Terry. He’s called out the lack of effort in each of the 4-5 radio broadcasts I’ve listened to while watching. Even guys who gave good effort last year are coasting now. Terry even asked Brannen in the postgame show if he could volunteer to come work with the guys on how to stop the ball and draw a foul.

There are lots of sports sins but not giving effort on the floor at UC is a mortal one.

Watching OSU-Minnesota basketball with my wife right now, and Minnesota has a 7-footer named Liam Robbins who transferred from Drake. He's putting up nearly identical numbers right now at Minnesota as he did in the MVC and is having a near career night. Just a random thought about how not all mid-major transfers are busts -- some 7-foot white dudes can play at the high-major level. But they are very hit or miss, and you need to have a staff who can identify whose games translates. Brannen and company obviously have a lot of work to do before we can trust they are capable of evaluating transfers.

If Cincinnati rides off into insignificance, it will mean Brannen is the wrong guy.
By the sites, he's getting higher ranked guys than Cronin. But that's a meaningless stat.
UConn rode into insignificance with some very nice classes. They aren't getting any better guys in the NBE. Its still arguable they will be any better with Hurley. Ollie had Akinjo and Matthews coming in before he got canned.
I just watched 2 very talented and deep teams tonight in Houston and SMU. Sampson is recruiting dogs. Even without Mills, they didn't miss a beat. They are murdering teams on the board.
The AAC is currently ranked 3rd in RPI (ahead of the BE) and gets better every year. There are no real gimmes. Even Haith - while he may not recruit at the top of the tree - used that zone to get a last second win against Houston.
This is all on Brannen's shoulders. I'm not sold that he's not the right guy, yet. Hurley lost to Haith in Gampel last year. Brannen needs to grind out some wins in a better than advertised league.

I'd agree with you 100%. I think there is a tendency when things aren't going well to confuse effort with frustration. There is clearly frustration and that is what concerns me more as it causes guys to play tight and adds pressure. Despite their considerable offensive woes they been in these games and made runs. You don't get that with lack of effort.

I think this season is showing the value of the buy game and how important UC’s home crowd has been.

I blame our coaching staff for not reacting to scheduling issue and the crowd situation is out the control of the staff but UC could be doing more to create an atmosphere for those viewing at home.

Interesting kenpom note BTW...UCLA is a plodding, glacial 346th in offensive pace this season....but are top 11 in offensive efficiency. Oh, he also has a top 5 recruiting class with a top 10 commitment and 2 other top 50 recruits and is in the final group for the #3, #4 and #6 players in the class nationally.

Climate must agree with them. He and Savino figured out how to teach offense and recruit or sumfin’.

to some / a great extent, UCLA recruits itself - and maybe the change of scenery helped the midget out - but he definitely mailed it in his last couple of years here

Easier to win too. No excuse to not be top 3 every year and in the tournament.

Let’s not forget the one year after SK, Rubles, and Justin Jackson all graduated. Leading returning scorers was Shaq Thomas (I think). Had seven new guys and two of the experienced guys were Caupain and Kevin Johnson (as Sophomores). Mick was out and Larry Davis came in and finished top 3 and got an 8 seed and won a tournament game.

Conference hasn’t really improved all that much since then.

RE: Thank Mick for this mess
Nevada game changed everything

Mick wanted to be paid as a top 25 coach and the board was tired of his demands and no results in March

Mick knew he was gone the first chance he got and quit recruiting
His last 2 classes and only having Samari Curtis committed when he left on April 9th set this program back

UC was going to struggle this year no matter who the coach was.

I am not sure how any UC fan can absolve Mick from the struggles this year

I have questions about Brannen but it’s too early to know for sure. He won the conference last year and has struggled this year

Unlike some on here I hope he does well.

Mick would have gotten UC to the NCAAs this year. History and track record says that would have been a very good bet.

Whether he won a game or not is a fair critical speculation.

Agree to disagree. The roster wasn't set up to succeed like Cronin had done throughout his time here. He would have needed to find multiple immediate impact guys. He hadn't recruited an immediate impact guy since Cumberland.

Now the one other Time he needed that (post getting them back to the tournament) he did so by finding Gary Clark, bringing back ellis and getting immediate impact role players cobb and deberry. Maybe he nails the recruiting class like he did that year and makes it. But his recent recruiting and only having one commit in his last year didn't give a ton of hope in that regard.

RE: Thank Mick for this mess
Mick proved he could win with guys that fit his system. Every year he found guys like Mbodj, Rubles, Deberry, Tre Scott, Brooks who were way off the radar and he’d pair them with a key cog or two and it worked. He found a way to make what he had work and to make opposing coaches miserable. Anyone really think Williams would be struggling in this role under the last staff? I don’t because we saw it every other year where he made things work somehow by changing what we did to fit the player.

Heck we had fans saying it was time for Mick to go after that Nevada game and that the following year would be a complete disaster and then he puts Cumberland into a position to win CPOY that beats Houston for the Conference crown and every Bearcat board was posting threads chest pumping and thanking Mick for being here...less than a month later the guy was a bum and we were glad he was gone because Brannen was an offensive genius. Lol

My only point was that it’s silly to think we would not have won the AAC last year and been right there again this season had Mick and that staff stayed. Only fault for any of this is that there was a coaching change, players left because of a new system, and our new staff isn’t exactly helping themselves much in the transition.

BTW, Jarr started this thread and he liked Mick so much that he became a full time Kansas State fan in 2007. Lol

I think you're undervaluing the importance of guys like Gates, SK, Evans, Clark and Cumberland. These guys were immediate impact guys the first time the set foot on the floor. Mick always had these type of guys. Williams isn't that. I strongly disagree with your take on Williams who I never saw as much more than a role player on good teams. I think his problem is because of the combination of his experience and the inexperience of the roster he is forced to play a role he was never meant to play. Keith is much more of a Shaq Thomas than an SK/Jarron.

I just disagree that the guys Mick had in the fold when he left were that similar to the guys he won with in the past (Excluding Tre/Jarron who were huge assets and why the team still was conference championship good last year). I think there was a real, obvious dropoff in talent. Maybe he could have rallied with a class like he had the 2014-2015 season that was strong enough to keep the team in the tournament despite not having that impact guy that had been in the program in the upper class. I'm skeptical based on where his recruiting was trending but it's possible. That's really the only year he didn't have the kind of instant impact guy he recruited that had been in the program.
