Hmmmm. Texas lost to ISU, OU and TCU. ISU and OU are ranked but the other school isn't. I wonder who the Longhorn fanbase can't stand losing to...

So I ventured over to surlyhorns and in the "Expectations for Sark" thread, virtually the unanimous comment was "for a start, beat TCU." LOL.

For the record, TCU is 7-2 against UT in the Big12, is the team that has beaten the Longhorns the most times in Austin (more than A&M despite many more games and because they always play OU in Dallas). Maybe, instead of demeaning and ignoring us, UT fans are beginning to see us as a rival. I doubt it though. After "finishing Strong," we Frog fans say "So long to Mensa" and hello to "Cutty Sark." Best of luck!

Yep.. Gary Patterson is still around just because he can beat Tom/Texas consistently since Mack was ousted. Not like TCU has been setting the world on fire since 2014/2015.

Herman also reached out to Arizona during their search and suggested they should wait to make a hire because he "might" be available. He knew UT was just keeping him on until after signing day.

If that's real, they fired him for doing what they were doing? They were shopping around for his replacement and so he was looking to see where he might go if they fired him?

Yep that's what some insiders that was posted on surly were saying. After they found out he was reaching to is when they ramped up the search. Inside Texas reported that Campbell was contacted (or his camp) in early December, but the search team felt that it just wasn't a good fit for Texas nor Campbell. Then they focused on Kelly, and Kelly's camp was receptive.. and IT says they were also talking to Sark and that they felt more excited than Sark.. And I'll be honest here..BK felt like the perfect hire that Texas would make just like IT said. Coaches like Sark would be the hire ou would make when looking for a HC.

IT is Nahlin, Wells, Hamilton, Waddington, Burton... The Campbell, BK, Sark scoop was posted by IT scoop part 2 earlier today. Can't remember which one wrote it (Nahlin?)

Just guessing, but I think he was asking what Kelly was being looked at. I am pretty sure it was Brian.

Schools just don't think as logically as this.

RE: Texas Shocker
Texas is hoping to imprint the Saban/Alabama system of program management. They are also hoping to get a QB guru, and Sark has a long successful list of developing NFL bound QBs, so that they can maintain consistent contender status from QB to QB. Ohio State, Alabama and Clemson pretty much have that. Oklahoma had a couple in a row.

Tom Herman they had hoped to get the Meyer/Ohio State system of program management, but really didn't materialize (I think Cincy's Fickell is displaying that much more). Recruiting was decent, but the results were mediocre.

It really comes down to the assistants Sark hires. Does he bring in a lot of retreads mostly, or does he have a healthy mix of up and comers. And does he get buy-in for the system?

Texas wants to be one of the near automatic playoff teams which Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson are. And it has the resources, money and support for this. This is an effort to get there. 9-3 is not acceptable at Texas. And this is not a program like Michigan with limitations, this is not a Nebraska, which lacks a recruiting base, this is a built in top ten base, even top five base for a football program. They will keep the door revolving until they get to that top five position year in and year out.

Well, good luck to Sark and Texas. Should be an interesting few seasons to say the least. I would not have envisioned a union between the two, but many successful school/coach partnerships are not always a clear fit on the surface.

The Big 12 would immensely benefit from having UT become a consistent top-10 program once again.

Didn't Texas pursue Saban after Mack Brown? Obviously he turned them down, but I want to say that Texas was willing to offer (then) $10 million annually.

Sark’s deal is six-years for $34.2 million, beginning with a $5.2 million salary for 2021. Herman made $6 million last season. Texas has spent over $60 million in the transition (between new salary for Sark and Co., buyouts for Herman and Co.).

How could UTX determine that Herman after 4 years didn't have goods? Expecting every new hire to generate Urban Meyer/ Nick Saban level turnarounds is unicorn level dreaming.

9-3 might not be acceptable but you have to start somewhere and allow the coach and staff time to implement the system.[/quote]

Someone pointed out that Sarkisian was QB coach for USC in 2005. He was on the losing sideline in Vince's 2nd Rose Bowl.

Yeah they have, for all the anger CDC has gotten this past fall, he still was able to go hat in hand and get the money for hires and buyouts. Sark is on a very friendly deal which makes me think he hires a pretty good staff. Flood at OL is a huge win for us UT fans.

Someone mentioned Starks failures at Udub, SC and the Falcons.. I get the SC ridicule, but the guy did have the #2 class in the country his one true class there. And he did inherit a bad Udub team based on the winless season prior to his arrival. Also with the falcons, his offense wasn't that bad especially considering that they had lost it's one true back his last season. The offense really didn't improve once he left either.

I get he isn't Urban or Kelly but he has the most upside (and greater risk) than anyone else out there. Think people look at the money UT is paying and automatically think that this is a bad hire because you only do that for a Meyer. But you gotta leave the money equation out of this. He doesn't have to be the savior, and as more days come and go.. people will start reading just how bad Tom did things and then understand a change had to be made.

In terms of winning on the gridiron, Texas has a culture problem. The kids at Alabama and Clemson etc. don't get too distracted by social issues. They are there to win football games, not to engage in self discovery and social debate.

I certainly don't, which is why I almost see this as a set-up for both sides as a failure.

I think Herman deserved one more year. He got to a top-10 finish in his second year, was 4-0 in bowl games and had a top-10 recruiting class in both 2019 and 2020.

Did something happen behind the scenes that forced the move? Still seems puzzling to me (especially since Herman clearly was a better hire/fit than Charlie Strong).
I do see Sark bringing Texas up to Oklahoma’s level. I base this on his previous head coaching stops (bringing Washington up from last place), and learning under Saban. The reason I feel so strongly is I believe he can get the most out of a QB, which Texas has struggled with. They’ve had nice QB’s, but no one who could single handily win games consistently or put fear in defenses like Baker or Kyler. I think that changes.

Because that formula has worked swimmingly in the past at South Carolina, Tennessee (twice with Dooley and Pruitt), and Florida (twice with Muschamp and McElwain)

Gotta admit, Sark is different from those guys.. he had 2 P5 jobs plus a stint in the NFL as an OC.
