RE: NIU vs. Bowling Green
SF should just cancel the season like Chicago State. Pay off MM, move on and save the university some money.

RE: NIU vs. Bowling Green
NIU is obligated to pay MM through June 30, so there is no point to a "buyout." Just let it lapse, use the extra time before then to find somebody else, use the $300k salary to pay the new guy come July 1, and let's get off this rolling train wreck.

Note to STF (fwiw) ... NIU is NOT going to draw sponsors with $$ if this c&@% continues. It's just going to get harder. E.g., How long has that Convo naming rights request-for-bids been hanging out there?!

Yes, and I am worried sick that Red Hot Chicago will drop its sponsorship and throwing hot dogs in the stands.

IMO, it almost feels like the naming rights is yet another thing that was allowed to fade quietly in the rear-view mirror.

Wait a minute ... Red Hot Chicago is a sponsor??!!?

It’s sad that the Schaumburg boomers (Wintrust) can get their field naming rights before we could. They didn’t even have a team a few years back after the flyers went BK

The cupboard is bare. We should be thankful we don't have to sit through this.

They are now. They were bad at the onset of the season and somehow, they've actually gotten worse as the season has progressed.

I honestly don't know how Montgomery has a job. I halfway expected to get an ESPN alert on my phone during the holiday break saying they'd removed him from his position. It didn't necessarily surprise me they didn't, but I wouldn't have been surprised if they had. Now....

How do you have a team that 1) can't shoot from the field, 2) can't shoot from 3, 3) can't shoot from the line, 4) turns the ball over constantly, 5) fouls like crazy, and 6) can't play defense and still have a job?

I don't care who the AD is (because I don't want to hear bull**** about Frazier rewarding him for his Chicago State win or any of that other nonsense). I'm over that nonsense as much as I'm over Montgomery as the head coach.

At this point, the hot seat under Montgomery has to be red f'n hot.

I'm unwilling to talk about any jokes or whatnot about extensions. I was ready to move on from Montgomery before the season started but I understood the reasons why he was probably still here. For one, German hid a ton of blemishes. But, last year wasn't just German. The 1-2-3 combo of German, James and McCarty was pretty damn tough. Montgomery recruited McCarty and got James as a D-1 transfer. And before that, he had Levi Bradley (and Jaylen Key) and Dante Thorpe (JUCO transfer). He'd also previously brought in another transfer in Marin Maric.

So, yeah...Montgomery was a blind squirrel who found a nut (German) but he did well filling the roster with good complimentary pieces to go with him.

But those days are clearly over.

I gave him the benefit of the doubt with the strength of the team being two juniors guards and a sophomore guard so it made sense to try to take advantage of that by loading up on JUCO big men. But those additions have been a bust. I'm not completely out on Makuoi and Kueth but the others are absolute garbage players. I also really like Thornton.

But honestly, Crump is so terrible I'm surprised he wasn't recruited by Ricardo Patton.

Scott...garbage (but he's also been hurt a lot)
Okanu...garbage
Cole...who?
Johnson...love his heart, but he's garbage
Mateen...he had ONE good game and people thought he was some kind of 3 point specialist
Lee...who?
Jones...who?

Big steaming pile of garbage.

Hankerson and Beane are good but neither can carry the team. Beane looks depressed (I don't blame him). Hankerson is always trying to do too much. Cochran is also doing too much but ******* I love his heart.

Honestly, Hankerson, Beane, Cochran, and Thornton are really special players. Its just none of them should be the go-to guy on the team. They're all good complimentary players. I applaud them all for trying to be the guy. It just isn't going to happen.

I pray those guys get a new coach next year who is able to identify a really good transfer big to go with Makuoi, whether he be D-1 (who can play next year), Grad, or JUCO.

Because this nonsense has to stop.

I'll never hate Montgomery like I do Patton. Patton actively destroyed the program for reasons I cannot understand or imagine to ever explain. Clearly Montgomery cares. And he's a good man. And he resurrected the program from the dumpster fire that was the Ricardo Patton era. But he never upped his recruiting game. He had a couple hits but far too many misses and missed the opportunity to keep the talent coming and developing for when German left.

I will always like Mark Montgomery and think of his era fondly. But it has to end soon. I don't want to get bitter every time I watch NIU hoops like I did with Patton. He took a struggling program and drove it straight off a cliff and I'd betcha he slept like a baby every single night.

That's not Montgomery. I bet Montgomery can't sleep at night. This bothers him, I just don't believe he has the ability to correct it and the correction would take 2 seasons. Let another coach take that on.

Alright...rant over.

Boomers have an average attendance of 3k over 40+ games, NIU basketball is lucky to reach 2k twice a year.

RE: NIU vs. Bowling Green
Thanks for the assessment, Big Red. And don't apologize. Everyone needs to launch a good rant now and then.

I agree with you 100%, including about Montgomery's character. Good man, but had enough chances. Time to move on.

I have both good and bad feelings about this whole situation.

The good feeling is that MM might know he's gone, which puts the brakes on any more recruiting misfires, and is easing out. I dislike the idea of a messy divorce, so to speak. Northern has enough problems, and despite what some say on the board, Montgomery doesn't deserve that. The bad feeling is that the team knows he's gone and is just playing it out. If that's the case, expect to see some in the transfer portal. I hope the ones you mentioned as good supporting cast will stay.

STF isn't going to tell anyone anything anyway, no matter how noisy we fans get. Unfortunately, that means more angry posts, jabs at the program, etc. But at least STF has got to know he's risking a lot if something doesn't change.

Well——it took me about 5.5 years——but Noah McCarty was actually pretty good.

I think I speak for all eleven of us——this is getting more and more difficult to watch.

RE: NIU vs. Bowling Green
Good rant, BigRed. Yeah, big pile of steaming garbage. That was an embarrassing loss yesterday, highlighting the many weaknesses of the Huskies. One weakness is Makoiu/Makoy/Makiuo/Adong - 2 points! Really! But then he wasn't a great JUCO so why would he be good stepping up to DIV1? He's is on my dime so I am entitled to call him garbage, 7huskie. And I am offended by you calling them "kids". They are not children or goats, whichever you are insinuating.
Hankerson used to irritate me last year because he wouldn't take shots. NOW I see why! It surprised me to learn last night that Hankerson led the MAC last year in 3pt shooting. He is 2-22 in his last 3 games!!! He is not the go-to guy. But without Gino, someone has to take the shot! TG for Cochran, our Gino replacement. Except Gino never lead the team in rebounds like Tyler is doing!

Ranting is one thing, calling kids "garbage" is another. You don't think MM is a good coach, agreed, he's a bad recruiter, agreed.

I said nothing of them personally.

If you can't recognize that, then that's for you to rectify.

RE: NIU vs. Bowling Green
IMO, the "garbage" reference was to the play, not the person. And "kids" is a generic reference to those younger than us (which is a heckuva LOT of people). In any case, I still agree with the overall assessment.

But that's beside the point ... which is this ... is anybody really in charge of this program? Is anybody making an effort to go from 1-7 UP to whatever, with 17 games left on the schedule? If Montgomery is a lame duck, surely the players want to impress for next year's squad (and whoever might be coach, statistically at least).

And if he is a lame duck, recall that when Ricardo Patton was let go, the "why" was not discussed. In fact, I don't think it was announced whether he was fired or allowed to resign. Northern just said he would not return as head coach. On the WBB side, same with Kathi Bennett and Carol Owens. So expect the same here, if that's the way it goes.

Anyway, there ARE 17 games left. Any attention I give will be to support the program.

I enjoy watching Monty's last season.
I guess I missed Monty's last game. Actually made a decision to fold laundry and watch a crappy movie than sit at a computer and watch a terrible team.
