Moving to FBS was the wrong decision but staying in FCS would have also been wrong? What was the correct action going forward in 2012?
Hindsight is 20/20. It was the wrong decision, though most of us, myself included, supported the move at the time. It is leadership's job to have the foresight.
It was the right move and still can be if they reduce footprint and add jmu or liberty and app st coastal ga state ga southern. reduce footprint by taking cusa east minus florida schools. maybe add uab and take both jmu and liberty. makes more sense than what they are thinking
JMU is FCS, Georgia Southern is 10 hours away at least and sucks at basketball , App State is a haul as well and sucks at basketball, and Coastal also sucks at basketball. Liberty and JMU are the only ones of those schools I have any interest in. I guess I App and Coastal would be ok as outliers. It is one thing if to be rich enough to charter flights to places like Clemson, Georgia Tech, BC and Syracuse every week but who wants to spend half the week on a bus traveling those distances? Unfortunately the move to FBS made a fitting conference almost impossible. Only way to do it is split off football for its own arrangement.

Dude with all due respect you need to check your geography, GA Southern is about 8 hours away and App State in Boone, NC is about six hours. Each would be doable drives for football.
If the goal is to keep Sun Belt and CUSA schools from hemorraghing money, primarily due to travel, we will need schools like this. So their basketball sucks we would be trading one, one bid league for another. Given the chance to establish some regional rivalries would be a good thing as it would cut athletic costs and allow the program to put saved travel dollars back into facilities, player development recruiting etc.
Personally, I don't see JMU moving up due to the increase in football costs, plus it would take away their secret weapon...immediate eligibility for FBS players dropping down to play. I would love for it to happen, but don't see it. Liberty makes sense due to proximity and athletic programs (I don't care about their politics as long as they put butts in seats when they come to Norfolk).
So if I was the supreme commissioner we would be in conference with a - APP State, Charlotte, Coastal, GA State, Liberty, JMU, East Carolina, NAVY, Temple, UCF and FAU.
Philly/Annapolis is the northern boundary, with FAU as the southern boundary. Atlanta is pretty much as far west as we go. Longest trip would be to FAU (who doesn't want to go to Boca in the winter). We save on travel costs across the board and develop/re-establish some good rivalries where fans can travel.
