RE: Fu@k the SEC.
Kelly’s old system is being run by about 60 teams nowadays...it’s not the new shiny thing. Defenses have figured out how to deal with a lot of the aspects of it.

I think he gets a limited number of exceptions, not an entire roster like Saban.

Saban doesn’t need an entire roster...he gets the same number of idiots Kelly does. He’s just better with them. Kelly’s system looks dated.

Kelly's system looks different from what he was running here. The old system actually seemed to work better.

He has moved from vertical passing to a more RPO style game now...it isn't working for him against elite athletes who don't necessarily need to make the right read and can cover their asses with raw speed/strength, which is why he can beat up on all of the middling teams but get creamed by any of the elite ones.

BK is clearly the best coach ND has had since Lou Holtz left, and one of the top 5 in the country. His program is just a bit short of the Big 3, but everybody else's is too.

I believe that ND's academic and character standards, while greatly reduced, are still a bit above those of the SEC schools, and that does make a difference at the margins.

I agree. BK has nothing to apologize for at Notre Dame, overall he's done a heckuva job for them.

The biggest gap in college football is between the top 6-8 nfl factories and everyone else. ND is not a part of that group and recruiting to that level in a private school in Indiana is unlikely. Their tradition is further and further in the past and if you're under 40 you've never seen them competitive with top programs in big games. I think this is their ceiling.

BK getting butt chapped at the media in the postgame was priceless. They had the gall to ask about why ND got run off the field yet again.

I haven't looked up the figures, but it seems like ND produces plenty of NFL talent. They can play in that group of teams, but obviously they are short of whatever it takes to beat whoever the top 2, 3 or 4 teams in the group happen to be in any given season. They actually did great to split with Clemson this year. If you look at ND's season as "they lost to Alabama, split with Clemson, and beat everybody else," it was great. Who else had a better season except for Alabama and Ohio State?

Edit: I looked up the numbers: NFL roster count

ND had 29 players on NFL active rosters at the start of this season, same as Oklahoma and Clemson.

Here's a good breakdown of where talent goes. When you look at it this way bama, osu and Georgia are in anther stratosphere from everyone else. Notre Dame below Michigan sandwiched between penn state and Washington.

I firmly believe that Notre Dame is in that top 6-8 range of elite teams. The issue is that the university and fans expect to be in that top 4 range. Notre Dame can come in and compete with 1-4 every once in a while, but the reality is they are in that 5-8 range. They need a special senior class to break through and it happens every few years. We saw the same scenario last year with LSU.

BK has ND at a level I feel they will struggle to replicate with other coaches. They are still just a rung down from Bama, Clemson and Ohio State.

And what's unreal is that we were on this level this year as well. I think you could have thrown in any of UC, ND, OKLA, A&M, FLA, GA in the #4. All of these teams were very close in level of performance.

All ND does is beat up on easy schedules.

They could play whoever they want. Now they're hiding in the ACC.

I've never understood why Kelly's never gotten anything other than caveman offense going up there. He had better offenses at UC.

And they play whoever they want for the most part AT HOME.
That is a huge advantage.

For UC to go into South Bend next year and beat the Domers, the Bearcats will have to freaking take it from them, their fans and the officials.

Kelly used the offense he did while here because we didn’t have the OL talent to run much else. The RPO is a safer system but they will continue to get their heads beaten in when they play the top programs. Honestly, he gets circles coached around him in these games every year.

UC may match up well against them in September...of course they will have their normal officiating crew in South Bend so it will be an uphill battle.

I don't really follow ND, but it seems like he has had few if any QBs there as good as Tony Pike.

The hatred of the SEC is silly. If they are paying players so be it. They became dominant when they hire Yankee head coached anyways.
