If the referendum passes, that takes pressure off to expand, and opens up potential non-FB schools.

Not sure it will pass but at least an effort is being made

There are several posts in this thread stating UTRGV as an FCS school doesn’t make sense. So can we read into their decision the attempt to start up football means the WAC studies will come back FBS positive?

Well isn’t that interesting.

Looks like UTRGV doesn’t want to be left out of the WAC football party. Good for the Vaqueros.

When is the vote? Does UTRGV have a pool or will they need to build a new pool?

We have a natatorium being built right now. It's a partnership between a neighboring city, a school district and Utrgv. They've probably been preparing for this since 2019.

This is great news. I'm hoping and praying that they go straight to FBS. Let's get the WAC up to FBS. No hidden NMSU agenda at all...05-stirthepot

As an employee, have to say I'm utterly gobsmacked, flabbergasted, and dumbfounded.

I was 98% certain it was just talk and have been saying that for years.

Just can't see how we'd be competitive at the FBS level. Recruitment, expected level of attendance....

If these dominoes fall the way they should, I am going to make a prediction that the WAC is FBS in '27.

Timeline

Late 2021/early 2022 - UTRGV students pass the fee and the dominoes start to fall for a '25 start to UTRGV football

2022 - WAC feasibility study occurs; feasibility studies usually go the way the parties want. The WAC announces a five-year plan to become FBS

2025 - UTRGV begins a two-year transition period as a FCS program en route to FBS. League initiates its transition for '25 football season

2026 - As part of second year transition, New Mexico State formally joins the WAC for football and all schools play a 'league schedule'. Only NMSU is bowl eligible.

2027 - League is FBS with bowl eligibility for each of the nine football playing institutions - Sam Houston, Stephen F Austin, Lamar, Abilene Christian, New Mexico State, Tarleton State, UTRGV, Utah Tech and Southern Utah.

How do you feel the students will vote?

How do you feel the students will vote?

It has a very good chance. Why? Many, probably a strong majority, of our full-time undergrads pay no tuition or mandatory fees. And I don't mean loans. I mean they're 100% covered by state and federal grants if their family income is less than $95K. The RGV median family is around $32K.

(Thank you to the taxpayers here.)

So for them the vote is "do you want a football team at no direct cost to yourself?"

Even back when the grant programs were less generous, students voted for a very fancy (by our standards) rec center and student union upgrade. Even those that don't use the luxury stuff or go to games want UTRGV to be more like "real" universities and football is definitely in line with that.

Texas already has 12 FBS schools. If this happens then that'll push the number to 16, followed by Ohio with 8, then California, Florida and North Carolina at 7 each. Everything's bigger in Texas!

If UTRGV adds football and the WAC goes FBS, then it will 18 Texas FBS schools. Right?

Yeah, I get 18. Maybe he's already decided two TX schools won't make the cut?

when is the vote again? I was very hesitant it would pass because the campus is split between several locations and seems like it does not have a cohesive campus feel..more like a commuter school. But if tuition to most students is actually supplemented to a large degree than it just might pass! Due to location, I have a hard time seeing them recruit well and being successful.

The when will be decided by the student government, theoretically they could decline to hold the vote at all but that's unlikely. Wild guess would be several months at least since there are multiple
committees involved.

Back when the merger of the multiple campuses into one UTRGV happened, the state made a flat decision that for the purposes of D1 athletics, UTRGV = Edinburg = the old UTPA.

They seem to be rethinking that agreement recently. They have the soccer team doing some games in Brownsville, they're ramping up the South Padre MTEs and billing them as home games, and now this new proposal seems to suggest two marching bands and half the football games in Brownsville.

Building just one new football stadium was already a stretch, and it would be political civil war if an infrastructure project of that size went to one city rather than the other. So I'm guessing this means use of HEB Park (9735) in Edinburg and Sams Memorial (10300) in Brownsville, at least during our lifetimes.

If the WAC is going FBS, then neither stadium meets the minimum standards.

Yup. I have no clue how they would get around this - if it's FBS, which isn't even mentioned in the vote proposal. No way we are building *TWO* 15000+ seat stadiums and no way you'll maintain the average if half the games are in a too-small venue. Is it possible to request an exemption?

EDIT: Maybe I'm reading too much into vague wording. Could be a marching band both places but a team and venue only in Edinburg. That would comply with the older decision. But it might also make Brownsville students (about 25-30% of the total) less inclined to vote for it.
