Wow. Didn't see that coming. I'm happy for UTRGV.

Man, this is a shock.

Hope it doesn't cost us the modest progress we've made in basketball and other sports.

A bit more detail in this story

https://myrgv.com/local-news/2021/01/14/...-football/

Sounds like not a done deal but way more likely than it looked just a few days ago. Guess I have to eat a couple years of saying ain't-no-way.

Is there really a requirement to have a 10k stadium for FCS?

How could you guys do it without raising student fees? The article says you won’t raise them.

No.. Many small private FCS universities have stadiums that seat fewer than 10k. Houston Baptist’s Husky Stadium seats 5000, for example

This is awesome!!!!!!!

Are we still sure about GCU?

The recruiting is only going to get tougher in Texas.

I think these comments from GCU president Brian Mueller (10:11 mark), which are consistent with what he has been saying since at least 2016, should make the Lopes position on football very clear to all (i.e. It's not happening).

I get it the Lopes aren’t adding football but I sure was hoping.

The more sports we play against each, the better and deeper the rivalries we will build.

I just love seeing the new map. Nice footprint with NMSU in the center. You could almost say everything revolves around NMSU...05-stirthepot

You're right, I could almost say that. So I won't. Thanks for letting me know how close I could've come to saying that.

RE: CollegeAD: As the WAC Gets Back Into Football, Sources Detail Where UTRGV Stands
With the FBS conversation on the table in the WAC and the ASUN, you could very well have new FBS leagues in both the "west" and "east" of the country.

UTRGV may be in the mix to join as a football playing member of the WAC but you could conceivably see some football affiliate members find homes in these new FBS leagues. New Mexico State (WAC) and Liberty (ASUN) already are members in other sports, but could you see UMass head to the ASUN and the WAC being a FBS league leading to someone like North Dakota State or South Dakota State biting the apple, joining the WAC as a football member only and going to the next level?

Matt Brown today on UTRGV football
—-
Communication immediately surrounding the official WAC press conferences suggested that UTRGV was going to start an FCS program, but UTRGV officials stressed that nothing was imminent. I continue to believe that they’re telling the truth. FCS football could very well start at the school, and there are still plenty of people in the community and around campus that would like the school to do it. But these things take time, especially in a post COVID world.

He’s a sports writer out of Chicago focused on realignment. He also has a book out on college football realignment on the past and I believe he had a second in the works. He runs the site Extra Points and is a genuinely stand up guy.
