Schools make moves, usually individually. This is an unusual situation where the long established Texas football schools have decided to leave the SLC. It is a decision driven by the ADs and Presidents, essentially to break with the SLC leadership (which they must have deep irrevocable differences with -- such that the SLC is trying to push them out this June with no lame duck year the Texas schools propose) and with the Louisiana schools, whom they have lost confidence with.
But for UTRGV to start football it requires additional constituencies to buy in and pony up significant money. UTRGV in fact had a study of D-I football where the conclusion was FBS possibly makes sense (i.e., the route Old Dominion, Charlotte and Texas-San Antonio went) but starting an FCS program does not -- when you figure in stadium and other facility requirements for a start up. To start an FCS program would need another study, a commitment from donors and a facilities plan and timeline. It seems a few bridges too far.
I tend to agree, but there may be a joker in the deck. That is if there is a well-conceived, realistic plan to quickly (I would consider that to be within 5 years) make a move to FBS for the WAC, it would change the dynamics, and it would essentially be a move to FBS with a planned short stay in FCS for UTRGV.
If there is such a plan no one appears to have seen it. I haven’t seen a single source who has reported that there’s there is any kind of plan realistic or otherwise in place to do anything other than sponsor FCS football.
There has been talk of FBS in semi-official statements. Most notably, when Dixie State and Tarleton were added there were several comments about a long term goal of FBS. More recently, in an interview NMSU's AD made the statement that if FBS were a part of the plan, that would be good. He said that in the context that he could not talk about specifics. His history has been that he doesn't drop those kind of hints unless there is something in the works. It doesn't necessarily mean it will come to fruition, but it is pretty strong indication that there is at least some consideration of it.
Ok. I knew about the NMSU AD’s comment but I didn’t take it as anything more than his hope for the future.
Our AD told me, in a face to face discussion, that Tarleton had FBS aspirations. Take that for what it's worth.

Latest from Matt Brown on the subject of WAC football additions.
Quote:I know a lot of WAC fans are worried league needs to add another current FCS member to meet autobid requirement. Hearing that isn't likely in the near term.
IF there are other additions in near term, hearing it's more likely to come from D-II, or from current member starting FB
Personally, I think it's probable that the WAC would be able to get a waiver to allow it to secure an FCS auto-bid, but even if they don't, whoever wins that league is gonna get a playoff bid either way.
I don't get the sense that's a huge concern among leadership atm

More on the football situation. No mention of UTRGV in this one.
The WAC is expected to add two more schools in the coming months. There’s a mix of DII and current FCS institutions being vetted by commissioner Jeff Hurd. The long-term goal of the league is to elevate the WAC back to FBS football later this decade. 2/3

Is the expansion to include four SLC football in Texas a driver in the conversation?
Where’s the money coming from?
Hmm, $17 to get a peek at it. I'd considering paying if it was guaranteed to be real news, but very likely it's just someone rediscovering or rehashing the old news that we did a study once.
"Where’s the money coming from?"
I'm glad you understand the issue. There is no money.
Don't be silly. There is gobs and GOBS of money. Don't forget you are UTRGV. And a PUF institution, at that. $500 million in new construction and upgrades you've enjoyed over the past five years is just a drop in the bucket for the UT System. If they decide they want football in South Texas, they bring football fo South Texas. Simple as that. UTRGV is a juggernaut just waiting to happen. You just opened a new medical school and hospital, for Pete's sake. Virtually overnight. This is why I think we'll see a A&M Kingsville/Corpus merger as an effort to keep the Force in check in South Texas. With the #Texas5 now in the WAC with FBS on the brain, football could very well be in play for Los Vaqueros, but it damn sure won't be FCS.
And when that happens, the HEB/Whataburger money will be flying there. Just out of curiosity, what would it take for HEB Park to be expanded for a FBS UTRGV?

Never been there but based on the pictures online, the endzones are still open. In theory they could convert into a horseshoe.
It looks like they have park space and parking around it

IF football ever does happen here then HEB park could and would only be used as a temporary home for football. The people further up the chain have MLS aspirations. From what i've heard they made the park expandable only for that possibility.
With that being said the valley has plenty of money to support a football team and build a stadium, but none of it is being tapped right now. Who ever is in charge of fundraising is going to have to step it up in order to make this happen.

MLS won't waste their time in that part of TX.
MLS already has Dallas Houston Austin
MLS has big markets that they haven't entered in yet like Phoenix San Diego to name a few.
I say all this b/c HEB would be lucky to have UTRGV football as a tenant.

To be really honest I asked someone within the athletics department and their response was "Where did they get their information from." I fired back with "Just remember this is two different administrations you are dealing with, the one who did the study, and the other who is new and somewhat aware of the results. Plus it is no secret that people want their football but unaware of what really goes on within the department." Plus my exchange with the person was "You did not pay for that article did you?" My response was "No but you university folks get a considerable discount plus you can share the link LOL."

Places like Phoenix, San Diego, Tampa, Detroit are all ahead of the RGV.
It's unfortunate that LigaMX can't get some teams stateside because the fanbase is already here and I feel like the RGV, San Antonio, El Paso, Phoenix, and Southern California could be alright

This is awesome!!!!!!!
Are we still sure about GCU?
The recruiting is only going to get tougher in Texas.
GCU now being clear that their press conference is only comments following the WAC announcement. I read that as no new news/announcement coming out of GCU at this time.
