They will fall deeper, that TV contract spread to all the mouths they have to feed only spells more devastation. Add in that their basketball has fallen off we can only expect more blood.

I noticed a good bit of the CUSA faithful, in particular La Tech, believe this is a Covid related fluke type of year for them. I could be mistaken but hasn’t the SBC been a stronger Football conference over the last 3-4 years?

I noticed that also, and yes! the Sun Belt has been better for 4 out of the last 5 years. 2020 was just the biggest and brightest separation of the two leagues performance. They are being forced to face some reality, but its hard for them to completely accept it. So they revert back to making excuses and creating a past that makes them look better than they have performed. I really laugh every time one of them say 2020 was a one year fall off for them.

Covid is always an excuse this year when things don’t turn out as planned.

Anyone know what the Sun Belt’s TV deal is? I thought I heard $5-10 million but not sure.

Its around the same as the MAC's, but like the MAC we have to pay for the production costs for ESPN Plus games. Overall, it works out to around 500K per school split 10 ways with reduced payouts to LR and UTA.

Yep. I mean if you had as crappy a season as laturd and coosa you might try using covid as an excuse too. Too bad the trend of the last 3-4 years alone shoots that down, like every other school and conf weren’t faced with the same issues, but I doubt it will stop the irrational delusional spinning of these people.

You have to understand that most La Tech fans seem perfectly happy with CUSA, as does most of the Texas schools. So they will remain optimistic for as long as they can. I don’t see how using Covid as an excuse helps justify poor performance. Every team in the country was dealing with the same situation.

There is no good answer for fixing CUSA. The article does a good job outlining a lot of the problems from the start. The league is to big, period. But how do you shrink it? How can you legally kick out teams without it becoming a lawsuit? I think the only hope is a realignment after the 2024 season as one poster suggested, but if there is a split it still doesn’t help unless you only take programs that prioritize football and have actual fans. If you do that, then geography/travel cost is still a problem.

There is absolutely ZERO chance any Sun Belt teams would want to join a CUSAE split, so everyone on the CUSA end needs to get that through their heads. If I could make an executive decision to fix the conference I’d shrink it to the following teams, and when I say shrink I don’t mean geographically, just team wise. Cut some dead weight.

1) Marshall
2) Charlotte
3) FAU
3) UAB
4) Southern Miss
5) La Tech
6) WKU
7) UTEP
8) North Texas

Then hope to pick up James Madison and Liberty to get to 10.

SBC football has been better than both CUSA and MAC 4 of the last 5 years. When that fact comes out CUSA fans usually like to resort to being “better” in basketball. But if you look at conference NET/RPI since realignment, the Sun Belt has been slightly better than CUSA:

CUSA ranks 2014-15 through 2019-20: 16, 21, 23, 14, 13, 15
CUSA average: 17.00

SBC ranks 2014-15 through 2019-20: 19, 17, 13, 20, 17, 14
SBC average: 16.67

I didn’t include 2020-2021 because this season is ongoing and will be weird with Covid, but right now SBC is #14 in NET and CUSA is #15.

The puppy killers are happy with CUSA, because deep down inside, they know their arrogant attitudes have burned any bridges leading to any other opportunities. And it's not just the fans, it's the administration also.

The most fun part will be when the new hires at ULM actually begin taking recruits from them and donors will keep some money in Monroe.

Is the WAC starting football a legitimate thing? I haven’t heard anything about it. I’f that’s the case then there will certainly be an East/West split.

The WAC is adding current FCS football playing members. NMSU is already a WAC member is all other sports.

UTSA was already in the WAC in our 2nd season as a football program in 2012. The WAC was rated right behind the ACC in the Massey Composite that year. We had offers to join the MWC and C-USA the next year and chose C-USA because of the regional rivalries with fellow Texas schools, and can tell you we're not heading back.

UTEP, LA Tech, and Rice were also in the WAC before we ever joined and I can tell you they won't head back either. I also know UNT wouldn't head to the WAC, so I'm not sure how you think the WAC restarting football with FCS schools will have a lot to say about what happens with the western schools in C-USA.

The Southland Conference is splitting, The Texas Schools are supposedly heading West to join the WAC and Central Arkansas is heading to the Atlantic Sun. Both leagues appear likely to start FCS Football, but I do not see an FBS WAC. Not the least of which because they don't have any current FBS teams

The only way it would work would be if the WAC Kicked out all of the FCS members that don't play football and got NMSU, LA Tech, and the Texas CUSA Schools to join in along with Texas State. At that point, the existing FBS schools could declare themselves an FBS conference and the 4 Southland could "move up" to join them.

However, that move would likely bring about the end of CUSA because There would be no way to stop Southern Miss from joining the Western SBC Schools at that point.

Loser tech would never do that but it would be a hoot for them to be back with Sam Houston and the other Texas schools. That's who was joining the Southland when tech and stAte left to start the American South and independent football. Or as I like to say "when we were wandering in the wilderness".

If CUSA continues down the road their on the negative effects will be felt by much of the G5 more specifically the Sun Belt when the smoke clears. THIS will be the cry that gets the attention of the rest of the league to step in and be part of the solution to fix the mess.

We have outliers in the Sun Belt that could care less for various reasons about the accomplishments of the Sun Belt and would just assume go another way if a decent pitch for change came their way. It only takes two or three in a conference of 10 to make a difference.

IF GS, App state, Ark state, Troy, USA, and CCU can stay together I honestly could care less what happens. No knock on the others just living in reality.

Overall, I want to keep UL, Troy, USA, AState, CCU, GS, and App together. If those 7 core schools stay together, the Sun Belt will be fine. That's nothing against the other 3 either. I just think we're finally forming something solid with those 7 teams right now...

I don't expect you will get any decent pitches coming if CUSA continues down the path they're on. No outlier will move into a worst financial and perception situation. These universities are always selling themselves to their communities and prospective students and staff, my guess is the presidents care about all the accomplishments of the Sun Belt and are quick to promote them on a individual level.
