For what it's worth, the Citrus Bowl was on at 1:00 on ABC. Auburn/North Western

RE: 2021 Peach Bowl Game Thread
I'm just returning from a self-imposed two week sabbatical from Bearcat Banter after a family vacation. Having watched the game from the Left Coast, this thread has been a great read--the expected roller coaster of emotions after a great performance by our 'Cats punctuated by an excruciatingly painful ending.

Two final thoughts. First, UC's performance was valiant and in the ensuing six days I've had time to deal with the disappointment of the final three seconds and see it for what it was--a team that most P5 fans would want to call their own. Taking that longer view, look at the money and the hype around Minnesota; ditto once great Nebraska, Michigan, and of course Texas where resources are virtually unlimited. Or look no further than a few miles west to Indiana where a NY6 bowl eluded the Hoosiers and they lost to an SEC also ran with a losing record. None rose to UC's performance against Georgia. None of those programs achieved UC's ranking or CFP buzz throughout the shortened season. It was truly a special year.

Second, watching UC on the big stage, I asked myself if it will advance the cause for a P5 invitation. It certainly doesn't hurt an already strong case but those wheels have to turn independent of UC and I really don't see movement at this moment. I believe UC will be in the P5--or whatever new configuration is spawned by a more cataclysmic event such as adopting the recommendation of the Knight Commission. But watching UCF, UH, and Memphis ascend to the NY6 game in recent years, it really didn't make a ripple in the expansion pond. UC's ascent may be well timed in this regard. At the very least, it was fuel for a growing fire among proponents of an expanded playoff that could provide the playoff opportunity that has, so far, eluded the "P6" AAC.

I really believe Fickell knows more than he can share about the future conference alignment and it may be why he's decided to stay the course for now and be that program builder we've always coveted. We can only hope that's the case.

I am bracing for the real short term test. Will our ranking stay relatively high, or will the AP drop us many spots after that tough loss, then drop us a bunch more in next season's preseason poll?

I would hope for Top 10 in both, but fear a drop to near #12, with a drop to closer to #20 in the preseason poll.

I think we will be in the mid-teens next year. Both polls had UCF, with far less previous season sauce, in the mid-teens this season...should Ridder return, I would think many would consider us a far better team than they were in the pre-season.

I'd be kinda surprised if we don't start in the Top 10. Indiana is going to be the team that is way overrated to start the year before finishing something like 7-6.

Oh, I think we should start in the Top 10. I just have no faith that we will.

If Penix is healthy, I could easily see them being the toughest game on our schedule. I believe they are only losing 4 starters...ND loses A TON and are running a new defensive scheme.

The Texas Tech beat writer will have us unranked.

The Cleveland.com Bucknut Bot pollster will have us below the average ranking of the other pollsters. He did it all this past year. That said, with the news of Rid coming back, all the national love, respect and media attention we received, and the close loss to Georgia I see us somewhere between 12 and 16.

You don't think they would prop UC up to make ND look better?

No. I know the "G5" thing was still in proving grounds mode but after UCF went undefeated in 2017 [including a Peach Bowl win] they opened at #21 in the 2018 preseason poll. They started a program high of #17 in 2019. The Cats started for the first time preseason ranked this year at #20. It would be a shock to me if they were preseason ranked higher than #12 - and that is probably on the outlier end of things. Still, we've come a long way in a short time so anything in the Top 20 is gravy.

The ESPN article about Des coming back says that we are a likely Top 10 team next year, fwiw.

I hope so but there is a hard bias against non power 5 schools.

Agreed, but we got a lot of play and attention and then went out and had a good performance short handed against what is expected to be a top 5 of not top 3 team next season and we have a ton coming back. The ratings were big and I think that will help.
