MyBB What we have here is a failure to communicate.
The team is in disarray when they are on offense because they don't know what they are supposed to be doing. The coach has to tell them what they should be doing in a manner in which they can understand, and he has to confirm they do understand. He then plays those who do.

Penny likes to play everybody as if he is coaching an NBA team. He is not. He has to toughen up and become a college head coach. I believe he can do it, but I am beginning to believe he won't. If he truly loves the Tigers he will buck up and do the right thing, coach or quit there is no middle ground.

He did say in his post game press conference that he is going to have to shorten the rotation. No more of the everyone gets to play. Might be why Rand has announced his transfer.

A lot of talk about how pro players can't coach when they come back to college. Well I just watched Michigan dismantle Maryland (pay no attention to the final score). Juwan Howard has it going on and that team is good. So clearly this model can work. I'm not sure who is staff is around him, but they are impressive. I believe in Penny. I believe that maybe we just don't have the right staff around him yet. I think it really hurt us when the Larry Brown thing was blocked out of the gate. Penny will win here...it's a process. Happy New Years everybody

I looked at this a few days ago. Howard has put together a very nice staff. He hired St. Joseph’s forever HC Phil Martelli and another coach with 10 years as an assistant in the NBA. Plus, Howard himself has six years NBA asst coaching experience learning under Erik Spoelstra. It’s a huge difference. I’m thinking Penny was hampered by COVID related budget cuts. I would guess he realizes he needs the help, which is why he went after Larry Brown.

You mention Michigan's staff. It looks like Howard got his "Larry Brown" from the get go.

Yep, that is fantastic for Howard. I would absolutely love to have something similar here.

Larry Brown is not the only experienced/retired head coach out there. I'm not going to blame Bowen for Penny hiring Jermaine Johnson. Penny has been given the keys. The program is his.

Don't forget we had the opening before the Covid financial crunch. Penny seems to always react instead of anticipate. Just another example.

Didn't we have an NBA coach of the year as an assistant.

Not exactly. Miller was still on staff when the shutdown started and the NCAA tourney was cancelled. At that time, universities were already circling wagons. Penny was asked to delay hiring anyone as long as possible. He made it fine this summer short-handed because there were no workouts, and they had to virtual recruit. Penny finally agreed on a 1-year compromise once season started to have help in practice. It is what it is, JJ is not the issue with this team.
